Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Italy

Using Nigerian certificates in Italy: legalisation steps

Nigerian birth, marriage and school certificates for Italian offices: Education ministry, Foreign Affairs in Abuja, the Italian mission, translation.

The short answer

A Nigerian certificate for use in Italy is authenticated in Nigeria first: academic documents by the Federal Ministry of Education, then all documents by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja. The Italian Embassy in Abuja or Consulate General in Lagos then legalises it, and the Lagos consulate's checklist requires every document to be translated into Italian and evidence of payment for MFA legalisation.

Italian offices regularly ask Nigerians for documents from home: a birth certificate for citizenship or residence, a marriage certificate for family reunion, WAEC results and a degree for university enrolment. Because Nigeria does not issue apostilles, these documents need a chain of authentication before an Italian comune, questura or university will accept them.

The chain, step by step

  1. Get the correct original. The issuer matters. For birth, the Italian Consulate General in Lagos asks for an NPC attestation of birth if you were born before 15 December 1992, and an NPC birth certificate if born after; for those born after that date it says an attestation and affidavit of age will not be accepted.
  2. Federal Ministry of Education, for academic documents only. The Nigerian Embassy in Abu Dhabi's attestation page states that non-academic documents do not require Ministry of Education authentication.
  3. Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja. The MFA's Legal Services Division authenticates the document. Olisa Agbakoba Legal's guide describes the process: complete forms, get a cost quote from the officer, pay via Remita, return with proof of payment and submit. It is charged per page, has no fixed timeline and may take several visits.
  4. Italian mission in Nigeria. The Italian Embassy in Abuja or the Consulate General in Lagos legalises the MFA-authenticated document. The Lagos checklist requires a receipt or other evidence of payment for legalisation at the MFA in Abuja.
  5. Translation into Italian. The Lagos checklist says all documents must be translated into Italian.

What the Italian consulate in Lagos lists, by purpose

PurposeDocuments on the Lagos checklist
Italian citizenshipNPC attestation (born before 15 Dec 1992) or NPC birth certificate (after); affidavit of age sworn at a State High Court where needed; police character certificate with fingerprints taken at the questura where you live; ID; consulate form
Family reunionBirth certificate, affidavit of age, attestation of birth; guardian's consent affidavit for minors; marriage certificate and change-of-name affidavit where relevant; DNA test for child-parent reunions
StudyWAEC certificate (NECO not accepted), degree certificate for master's, transcript, birth certificate, pre-enrolment form

The checklist gives no fees, booking method or processing times, and does not say which Nigerian states each Italian office covers. Check with the office that serves your state of residence, or the one your Italian office asks for.

When names or dates do not match

Italian offices compare every document in a file, so a different spelling or date between your passport, birth record and marriage certificate will be noticed. The Lagos checklist anticipates some of this:

  • Married women are asked for the marriage certificate, an affidavit of change of name and the spouse's identity document.
  • Affidavits of age are sworn at a State High Court by a parent, uncle, aunt or older sibling at least six years older, or by the applicant if aged 50 or over. Anyone with a birth certificate does not need one.
  • Other discrepancies. The Nigerian Embassy in Abu Dhabi's attestation page asks for a court affidavit where documents differ, which is the usual Nigerian fix.

Swear any affidavit in Nigeria before the MFA step, so it travels through the same chain as the documents it explains.

Doing it from Italy

Most of the chain happens in Nigeria, which is the hard part when you live in Italy. The usual arrangements are a trusted relative or a Nigerian law firm handling the NPC, ministry and MFA steps, with the documents then taken to the Italian mission. The OAL guide is silent on whether a representative may submit at the MFA, so confirm before relying on one. Keep scans of every stamp at each stage.

For degrees, Italian universities may also ask for a dichiarazione di valore from the Italian mission; see dichiarazione di valore for a Nigerian degree. For citizenship files, see Nigerian documents for Italian citizenship, and for the Italian mission's side, Italian Embassy Abuja legalisation.

Translation

The Lagos checklist requires Italian translations but does not say who may translate or whether certification is needed. In Italy, translations can be sworn before a court clerk, a justice of the peace clerk or a notary. Ask the Italian office that will receive the document what form of translation it accepts; see sworn translations in Italy.

What to check first

  • Which Italian office wants the document, and for what purpose?
  • Is your Nigerian document the right type (for birth, NPC certificate or attestation depending on your date of birth)?
  • Is it academic (Ministry of Education first) or not?
  • Who in Nigeria will take it through the MFA?
  • Which Italian mission covers you, and what does it charge?

Where Pryme fits

MFA fees are paid in naira via Remita in Nigeria, and a relative or lawyer handling the chain may need funds. A Pryme Personal Account can send naira to a Nigerian account, showing the rate and fee before you approve, and give you a receipt for what you paid; see sending money and receipts. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's services are provided through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

How do I legalise a Nigerian birth certificate for Italy?

Get the NPC document, have it authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, then legalised by the Italian Embassy in Abuja or Consulate in Lagos, and translated into Italian.

Does my Nigerian degree need Ministry of Education authentication?

Yes, academic documents go to the Federal Ministry of Education before the MFA. Non-academic documents do not, according to the Nigerian Embassy in Abu Dhabi.

Does Italy accept NECO results?

The Italian Consulate in Lagos's checklist says NECO is not accepted for study in Italy; WAEC is required.

Can I legalise Nigerian documents at the Nigerian Embassy in Rome?

The Italian side legalises Nigerian documents through Italy's missions in Nigeria after MFA authentication. The Rome embassy's site lists no service for this.
