Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

USD cash pickup in Nigeria sent from the US: how it works

Can family in Nigeria still collect US dollars in cash from a transfer sent in the US? What the CBN's naira-only rule changed and the ID a receiver shows.

The short answer

Not through money transfer operators any more. Under a CBN circular effective 1 May 2026, international money transfer operators such as Western Union, MoneyGram and WorldRemit must pay recipients in Nigeria in naira only, so cash pickup is paid out in naira. The receiver collects with the transfer reference and valid photo ID in the exact name the sender entered.

What changed

For years, many diaspora families collected dollars over the counter at a Nigerian bank from a transfer sent through an operator. That ended in two steps. In early 2024, TheCable reported a CBN circular, relayed in an Access Bank notice, saying all such transfers would be received only in naira, into an account or in cash. In March 2026 the CBN issued "Measures to Further Deepen Diaspora Remittances and Compliance", effective 1 May 2026. Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie's note on it says the IMTO Guidelines require payment to customers only in naira, and that disbursements must run through naira settlement accounts with authorised dealer banks.

Sendwave's own US-to-Nigeria page now says USD remittances are no longer allowed. Some provider pages still carry older wording about dollar payouts, so treat the CBN rule as the current position and the provider's quote screen as the final word on what your recipient will get.

How naira cash pickup works now

  1. You choose cash pickup in the app or at an agent, enter the recipient's full name exactly as on their ID, and pay.
  2. The app shows the naira amount the recipient will collect, the exchange rate and your fee before you confirm.
  3. You share the reference number (MTCN for Western Union, a reference number for MoneyGram and others) with the recipient.
  4. The recipient goes to a listed bank branch or agent with the reference and ID.
  5. The agent checks the ID and reference against the transfer and pays out naira.

The ID the receiver shows

WorldRemit's cash pickup FAQ says the recipient needs valid photo ID with a full name matching the transfer, plus the transaction reference, and that neither WorldRemit nor its partners charge the recipient. TheCable's 2024 report listed acceptable IDs for cash collection as an international passport, driver's licence, national ID card or permanent voter's card. GTBank's MoneyGram page says non-customers can collect with regulatory ID such as BVN or international passport. Western Union's US terms say it has no obligation to pay if the name differs.

Limits on cash

Cash pickup is meant for small amounts. TheCable's 2024 report said transfers above $200 equivalent had to go to a bank account, and GTBank's MoneyGram page says amounts above $200 must be credited to an account. For anything larger, use the recipient's naira bank account.

Payout currency
Naira only, from 1 May 2026
Cash pickup
Smaller amounts; around $200 equivalent and above goes to an account
What the receiver brings

WorldRemit says none; check each provider

Common problems at the counter

  • Name mismatch. A nickname, missing middle name or different spelling from the ID. Ask the provider to correct the name rather than cancelling.
  • Expired ID. Agents will not accept it. Renew first, or send to an account instead.
  • Wrong reference. Copy it from the app, not from memory, and send it by text.
  • Branch has no cash or the system is down. Try another listed location from the provider's locator, and check in the app how long an unpaid transfer stays open before it is refunded.
  • Someone else collecting. Only the named recipient can collect. If your relative cannot travel, change the recipient before pickup or send to their account.

If your family needs actual dollars

  • Wire to a domiciliary account. A bank wire from your US bank to the recipient's dollar (domiciliary) account at a Nigerian bank is outside the IMTO naira rule. See wiring USD to a domiciliary account.
  • Withdrawing dollar cash from a domiciliary account has its own bank rules; withdrawing dollar cash from a domiciliary account explains them.
  • Carrying cash. If you travel with more than $10,000 in currency or monetary instruments, FinCEN Form 105 must be filed when you leave the US.

For the operator-specific steps, see WorldRemit cash pickup and Western Union dollars or naira.

Where Pryme fits

Family in Nigeria with a Pryme Personal Account can receive naira into an account, with deposits held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank. A multicurrency account also holds USD, and you choose when to convert with Swap. The app shows the rate and the fee before you approve.

Questions people ask

Can I still send dollars to Nigeria for cash pickup?

Not through money transfer operators. Since 1 May 2026 the CBN requires them to pay recipients in naira only.

What ID does my mum need to collect money at the bank?

Valid photo ID in the exact name you entered, such as an international passport, driver's licence, national ID card or voter's card, plus the reference number.

Is there a limit on cash pickup in Nigeria?

Reports of the CBN rules and GTBank's own page put the line at about $200 equivalent; larger amounts go to a bank account.

How can my family receive dollars instead of naira?

A bank wire from your US bank to their domiciliary account is the usual route.
