Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Can you use Venmo to send money to Nigeria?

Venmo is a US-only service. What its own terms say about non-US PayPal accounts, why that rarely helps a Nigerian recipient, and what to use instead.

The short answer

Not in any practical sense. Venmo's user agreement (effective 24 August 2026) says you must be in the US with a US bank account, and the only route abroad is a payment to an "eligible" non-US PayPal account, sent in dollars, with a 5% fee (minimum $0.99, maximum $4.99) plus a conversion spread. Venmo does not say whether Nigerian PayPal accounts qualify, so a remittance app or bank transfer that pays naira into a Nigerian account is the reliable route.

What Venmo itself says

Venmo is a US peer-to-peer payment app owned by PayPal. Its user agreement, effective 24 August 2026, is direct about who can use it: "You must be in the United States and have a U.S. bank account to use the Venmo services," and a personal account holder must be "a resident of the United States or one of its territories." Your relative in Lagos cannot open a Venmo account, and you cannot send to a Nigerian bank account or phone number through it.

The one cross-border feature is payments to PayPal. The agreement lets you send money to "eligible personal PayPal accounts, including eligible non-U.S. PayPal accounts", depending on both accounts' settings. Payments are sent in US dollars, and the recipient receives them in their preferred currency by default, at a rate that "includes a currency conversion spread applied and retained by us".

The cost of the PayPal route

Venmo's fees page lists a 5.00% fee to send money to an eligible non-US PayPal account, with a minimum of $0.99 and a maximum of $4.99, whether you pay from your Venmo balance, debit card or bank account. Paying by credit card adds a further 3.00%, and the agreement warns your card issuer may also charge a cash-advance fee.

Example amountVenmo cross-border fee (5%, min $0.99, max $4.99)With credit card (+3%)
$20$1.00$1.60
$100$4.99 (cap applies)$7.99
$500$4.99$19.99

Example only. The table applies the published percentages; the conversion spread comes on top and is shown in the app before you send.

Why the PayPal route rarely works for Nigeria

Venmo does not list which countries count as eligible, so whether a Nigerian PayPal account can receive a Venmo payment is not confirmed by Venmo's own pages. On the Nigerian side, PayPal's Nigeria help centre says features differ by market and that receiving money requires linking to a licensed local partner. Even when a payment lands in a Nigerian PayPal balance, the recipient still has to get it out into naira through PayPal's local partner, subject to PayPal's own charges in Nigeria. That is several steps, two companies' fees and a currency conversion before the money is spendable in Nigeria.

There is also no clean record of a "remittance" in the sense the US rule uses. A dedicated remittance transfer gives you a receipt with the rate, fees, amount received and your error and cancellation rights; a peer-to-peer payment to a PayPal account is a different product.

Legitimate routes that pay naira in Nigeria

  • Remittance apps. Licensed US money transmitters such as Remitly, WorldRemit, Sendwave and others pay naira into Nigerian bank accounts and, depending on the provider, mobile wallets or cash pickup. They show the fee, the rate and the naira received before you pay.
  • Xoom. PayPal's own international transfer service. Its Nigeria page describes bank deposit and cash pickup in naira, paid for with PayPal, a bank account or a card. See sending to Nigeria with Xoom.
  • A bank wire. Suited to larger sums; bank fees and the bank's rate apply.
  • Your Venmo balance as a source. You can move a Venmo balance to your linked US bank account (standard transfers are free and typically take 1 to 3 business days, per Venmo's fees page) and then fund a remittance app from that bank account.

The same logic applies to other US apps: Zelle and Cash App are built for payments inside the US. Our guides on Zelle and PayPal cover those.

What to check first

  1. Ask how the recipient wants to be paid in Nigeria: a naira bank account, a mobile wallet or cash pickup.
  2. If you hold money in Venmo, move it to your linked US bank account first; the standard transfer is free and Instant Transfer costs 1.75% (minimum $0.25, maximum $25), per Venmo's fees page.
  3. Get quotes from two or three remittance apps for the same amount and payout, and compare the naira received.
  4. Check the provider is licensed as a money transmitter in your state before you sign up.
  5. Keep the remittance receipt; it shows the date the money will be available and how to report an error.

If someone asks you to "just Venmo" them

Be wary when a person you have not met, or a seller of naira, asks for a Venmo payment to a US account and promises naira in Nigeria in return. That is an informal swap: Venmo's protections cover the US payment, not the naira that is supposed to arrive, and you have no remittance receipt to rely on. Our guide on paying someone in the US to send naira sets out the risks.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme is a technology company; outside Nigeria its services are carried out through regulated partners. A Pryme account, opened from the US, holds dollars and naira with local account details for each, and you can send naira to a Nigerian bank account after converting with Swap. The app shows the rate and the fee before you approve.

Questions people ask

Does Venmo work in Nigeria?

No. Venmo requires users to be in the US with a US bank account and personal account holders to be US residents. A Nigerian recipient cannot open a Venmo account.

Can I send money from Venmo to a PayPal account in Nigeria?

Venmo allows payments to eligible non-US PayPal accounts but does not list eligible countries. Whether a Nigerian PayPal account qualifies is not confirmed on Venmo's pages; the app will tell you if a recipient is ineligible.

How much does Venmo charge to send to a non-US PayPal account?

Venmo's fees page lists 5% with a minimum of $0.99 and a maximum of $4.99, plus 3% more if you pay by credit card, plus a currency conversion spread.

What can I use instead of Venmo to send money to Nigeria?

A licensed remittance app that pays naira to a Nigerian bank account or wallet, PayPal's Xoom service, or a bank wire for larger sums.
