Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Can you send money to Nigeria with PayPal from the US?

PayPal to Nigeria has changed in 2026 with the Paga link. What a US sender can do, what the receiver needs, and where Xoom fits instead.

The short answer

For years Nigerian PayPal accounts could send but not receive, so a US PayPal user could not simply pay family in Nigeria. Since January 2026 Paga account holders can link PayPal to their Paga wallet, receive payments and withdraw in naira, which opens a route if the receiver sets it up; for a plain transfer to a Nigerian bank account, PayPal's own service is Xoom.

"Just PayPal it" is the reflex for many US-based Nigerians, and for most of PayPal's history it did not work for family at home. The picture changed in 2026. This guide explains what was true, what the Paga partnership changed, what is still unclear, and when to use Xoom or another route instead.

Why PayPal and Nigeria have been awkward

According to TechCabal (January 2026) and The Algorithm Post (June 2026):

  • PayPal blocked Nigerian access in 2004.
  • In 2014, through a partnership with First Bank, Nigerians could open PayPal accounts that could send and pay, but not receive.
  • Businesses had a separate route through Flutterwave from 2021.
  • On 27 January 2026 PayPal and Paga announced that Paga account holders could link PayPal to their Paga wallet.

So a US sender paying a Nigerian's ordinary PayPal account, with no Paga link, has usually hit the receive restriction.

TechCabal's report says Paga account holders can link PayPal to their Paga wallet, receive money from more than 200 countries, withdraw in naira, keep dollar balances, and receive from Venmo users in the US. Conversion is at willing-buyer, willing-seller rates.

QuestionWhat is known (Oct 2026)
Who must set it up?The receiver in Nigeria, through a Paga account linked to PayPal
Can it receive from a US PayPal user?Reported yes, from over 200 countries
Currency on withdrawalNaira, with the option to hold dollars, per TechCabal
Fees and limitsNot stated in the reports we read
Do platforms accept it?Unclear; The Algorithm Post quotes a freelancer whose Nigerian PayPal was rejected by Fiverr for a withdrawal

What it costs from the US side

PayPal charges for international personal payments and for currency conversion; the amounts depend on how you fund the payment. We could not load PayPal's US fee page in October 2026, so we do not quote figures here. PayPal shows the fee and any conversion before you send. Our guide to PayPal fees for paying a Nigerian user goes into the categories.

What the receiver needs to do

Under the Paga route, the work sits with the receiver. They need a Paga account, then link it to a PayPal account, as the January 2026 reports describe. After that, they can share their PayPal details with you. The reports we read do not set out Paga's verification steps, the fees on withdrawal or any limits, so the receiver should read Paga's screens before the first payment and tell you what they see. If the receiver is not willing or able to set this up, do not use a third party's PayPal account to reach them; that leaves the payment in a stranger's hands.

When Xoom is the better tool

Xoom is PayPal's own remittance service. You sign in with your PayPal login and Xoom pays a Nigerian bank account (its page names GTBank and First Bank) or cash pickup, in naira, showing the exact fee and naira amount first. Xoom says its transfers are not subject to the 1% US remittance tax because it does not accept cash. If the receiver has no Paga account, or needs money in a bank account today, Xoom is the PayPal-family route. See Xoom to Nigeria.

Worked example (illustrative)

Your cousin in Ibadan does freelance design and has a Paga wallet linked to PayPal. Paying her $120 for a logo through PayPal may suit both of you, as she can hold it in dollars or withdraw naira. Your aunt, who has only a First Bank account, cannot receive PayPal; for her $120 a Xoom bank deposit, or any licensed remittance app, is the practical route.

Friends and family, or goods and services?

Choose the payment type that matches what the payment is. A personal gift should not be sent as a purchase, and a payment for work should not be disguised as a gift. PayPal's own terms set out what each payment type covers, so read them before choosing. If anyone in Nigeria asks you to pay a stranger's PayPal for "fees", see common scams.

What to check first

  1. Does the receiver have a Paga wallet linked to PayPal?
  2. What fee and conversion does PayPal show before you confirm?
  3. Is the payment personal or for work?
  4. If the receiver only has a bank account, use Xoom or another remittance service.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account can be opened from the US and from Nigeria, holds dollars and naira, and converts with Swap only when you choose, with the rate shown first. See sending money.
