Ten years, one trunk

2018OjirehPrime Card

2023Multicurrency

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Can a US resident open a Nigerian bank account with BVN?

Whether your existing BVN is enough to open a new Nigerian bank account from the US, the documents diaspora desks ask for, and when you need an NRBVN.

The short answer

Your existing BVN stays valid when you move to the US, and it is the key that lets most Nigerian banks open a new account for you remotely, but it is rarely enough on its own. Banks also need ID, proof of your US address, a photo and often references, and the online route usually depends on a one-time code sent to the phone number on your BVN. If you never had a BVN, you apply for a Non-Resident BVN (NRBVN) online instead.

What your BVN does and does not do

A Bank Verification Number is a single identity across Nigerian banks, created from your fingerprints and photo at enrolment. NIBSS’ BVN page says enrolment takes place at a bank branch and that updates to customer information are made “at their Bank Branches physically”. Nothing on that page suggests a BVN lapses when you emigrate; it stays your identity across Nigerian banks. Our Nigeria library explains the NRBVN and how BVN works in more detail.

What the BVN gives a bank is your verified identity and biometric record. It does not give the bank your current address, your US status or proof that the person applying online is you. That is why banks add their own checks.

Two routes to a new account

Online opening with BVN and a face check

Some banks open accounts online for customers abroad using the BVN. Techeconomy reported in January 2026 that UBA’s cross-border digital opening asks for the BVN plus facial verification, sends a one-time code to the phone number registered to the BVN, then takes your details, uploaded documents and a digital signature, issuing an account number immediately and supporting naira and diaspora accounts. The weak point for many people in the US is that code: if your BVN is still linked to a Nigerian SIM you no longer use, the online route stops there, and changing the phone on your BVN is a branch job.

A diaspora or non-resident account by documents

Banks’ diaspora desks open accounts from document packs. GTBank’s NRN Services page, for example, is for Nigerians living outside Nigeria more than 180 days a year and asks for:

  • the NRN account form and self-certification, data privacy consent and banker’s confirmation forms;
  • ID such as NIN or vNIN, Nigerian passport, national ID, PVC, driver’s licence, or a notarised foreign passport or licence;
  • proof of foreign address (an overseas bank reference, or a notarised utility bill or stamped statement within three months);
  • a passport photograph and your BVN;
  • evidence of income such as employer ID, payslips or a foreign bank statement, and references for current and domiciliary accounts.

Access Bank’s Diaspora Banking FAQ sets out a similar pack, with notarised IDs and statements and references from a foreign banker plus one Nigerian attestor, or two Nigerian attestors with current accounts. Our guide to using a US utility bill as proof of address covers that part.

If you never had a BVN

Nigerians abroad without a BVN apply for an NRBVN. The NIBSS NRBVN page directs applicants to nrbvn.com, lists valid ID, proof of residency, a work ID or employment letter and, where applicable, a reference letter from a financial institution, and says the NRBVN is issued within 72 hours of approval. GTBank’s NRBVN page adds a liveness check and says fees are shown during the process; a CBN statement reported by Arise News in July 2025 described a $50 recoverable processing cost for the NRBVN, while BVN enrolment in Nigeria is free. Use only the official site; GTBank warns of fake ones.

NIN is part of the picture

The Mandatory Use of the National Identification Number Regulations 2017, as summarised by Templars, list operating a bank account among the transactions that need a NIN. Most banks now ask for both BVN and NIN, so check that your NIN is active and matches your passport name before you apply.

Common snags

  • Name mismatch. If your passport, BVN and NIN show different spellings or a married name on only one, expect the bank to ask for a sworn declaration or to reject the application until the records agree.
  • Old phone number. Codes go to the number on your BVN. If you cannot receive them, the online route fails; a document-based diaspora route may still work.
  • References. Banks that ask for Nigerian current-account referees may not accept relatives with savings accounts only. Ask early.
  • Courier time. Notarised originals sent to Lagos take time; proof of address dated within three months can expire in transit.

What to check first

  1. Do you know your BVN, and can you receive codes on the phone number linked to it?
  2. Does your NIN match the name on your passport and BVN?
  3. Have you got a proof of US address dated within three months, and can you get it notarised?
  4. Does the bank need Nigerian references, and who can give them?
  5. Which account do you need: naira, domiciliary, or both?

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal Account can be opened from the US through the app, and holds naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros with account details for each. Pryme is not a bank: naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, and outside Nigeria services are provided through regulated partners. See open an account and how it works.

Questions people ask

Can I open a Nigerian bank account online from America with my BVN?

Often yes, where the bank offers online opening with BVN and a face check, but it usually needs a code sent to the phone number on your BVN and extra documents.

Does my BVN expire if I live abroad?

No. A BVN stays with you; updating details such as the phone number is done at a bank branch, according to NIBSS.

What is the NRBVN and who needs it?

A BVN for Nigerians abroad who never enrolled. You apply at nrbvn.com, and NIBSS says it is issued within 72 hours of approval.

My BVN is linked to an old Nigerian number. What can I do?

Banks send codes to that number, and NIBSS says customer information is updated at bank branches, so plan the change for a trip home or use a document-based diaspora route.
