Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Payday loans in the UK: the cost cap and the risks

What the Financial Conduct Authority price cap on payday loans means in pounds: 0.8% a day, £15 default fees, 100% total cost, and the risks.

The short answer

Since 2 January 2015 the Financial Conduct Authority has capped payday and other high-cost short-term loans: interest and fees cannot exceed 0.8% a day of the amount borrowed, default fees are capped at £15, and you can never pay back more in fees and interest than you borrowed. A £100 loan over 30 days costs at most £24.

New arrivals often hit a cash gap: the first salary comes a month after you start, a deposit is due, or money has to go home urgently. Payday lenders are quick and some accept thin UK credit files. They are also expensive. The FCA's cap limits how expensive, and knowing the numbers helps you decide.

The three parts of the FCA cap

The FCA set out the rules in November 2014, in force from 2 January 2015:

  1. Initial cost cap: interest and fees must not exceed 0.8% per day of the amount borrowed.
  2. Default cap: default charges must not exceed £15. Interest on unpaid balances is also limited to the initial cost rate.
  3. Total cost cap: borrowers must never pay back more in fees and interest than the amount borrowed.

The FCA says the cap applies to each loan agreement, including when a loan is refinanced or rolled over, and to repeat borrowing.

What the cap means in pounds

The FCA's own example: a 30-day loan repaid on time costs at most £24 in fees and charges per £100 borrowed.

Example loanDaysMaximum interest and fees (0.8% a day)Most you could repay on time
£10030£24£124
£30030£72£372
£50014£56£556
£50045£180£680

These are the ceilings, not what every lender charges. The total cost cap means a £300 loan can never cost more than £300 in interest and fees combined, even if it goes badly: the most you would ever repay is £600.

Example of a missed payment

Example: you borrow £300 for 30 days and cannot repay on the due date. The lender may add a default fee of up to £15, and interest continues at up to 0.8% a day on what is unpaid, but the total of all interest and fees is held at £300. That is still a heavy cost for one month's gap.

Rolling a loan over, or taking a new one to pay off the old, does not reset the protection to your advantage: the FCA says the cap covers charges when a loan is refinanced. But each new agreement is a new loan with its own cap, so a run of back-to-back loans can cost far more in total than any single one.

Risks beyond the price

  • Your credit file: payday loans are credit agreements and are commonly reported to credit reference agencies. Mortgage brokers often report that some lenders view recent payday borrowing negatively when you later apply for a mortgage. See our guide to building a UK credit score.
  • The cycle: repaying one loan leaves you short next month, which leads to another.
  • Unlicensed lenders: anyone lending to you must be authorised by the FCA. Check the FCA register before you apply.
  • Your visa: borrowing does not affect visa status by itself, but debt problems that lead to court action are stressful to carry through a renewal.

Before you sign

  1. Check the lender is on the FCA register under its exact name.
  2. Read the total amount repayable and the repayment date on the agreement.
  3. Work out the cost per day and compare it with the 0.8% ceiling.
  4. Ask how it will collect payment and how you can change or cancel that.
  5. Borrow only what closes the gap, for the shortest term that you can meet.
  6. Plan what you will cut next month to repay without borrowing again.

Many newcomers borrow to send money home in an emergency. Before you do, ask whether the family need can wait a week, or be split into a smaller amount now and the rest after payday. A £300 gap borrowed for 30 days can cost up to £72; the same gap closed by a week's delay costs nothing.

Alternatives to try first

  1. Ask your employer about a salary advance.
  2. An arranged overdraft is priced under different FCA rules; compare the cost. See UK overdraft charges.
  3. A credit union loan, if you can join one locally.
  4. Speak to a free debt charity before borrowing to repay other debts.
  5. Ask family to delay a request for money home by a month, if that is possible.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not offer UK loans. For family support that strains your budget, an Personal Assistant can help plan transfers around payday, and an emergency fund is the long-term answer to the cash gap.

This page explains the FCA's published rules. It is not financial advice.
