Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Building a UK credit score from zero as a Nigerian

New to the UK with no credit history? The steps that build a file month by month: electoral roll, bills in your name, a small card paid in full.

The short answer

You build a UK credit score from zero by giving the credit reference agencies something to record: register on the electoral roll if eligible (Nigerians, as Commonwealth citizens with permission to stay, usually are), put household bills in your name and pay them on time, and use a small credit card lightly and repay it in full each month. Avoid repeated applications. Progress is measured in months, not weeks.

Equifax puts it plainly: when you move to the UK you won't have a credit report, or it may be empty, and a healthy record from your home country does not transfer across. That is not a judgement on you. It means lenders, landlords' referencing firms and phone networks have nothing to go on. The work is to create a short, clean record as early as possible.

How UK credit files work, briefly

The ICO explains that the three main consumer credit reference agencies are Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. They hold information on how you manage credit and utility accounts, your previous addresses and public data such as the electoral roll and county court judgments. Lenders do not have to report to all three, so your file can differ between agencies. Each lender also applies its own scoring, so there is no single 'UK credit score'.

Step 1: the electoral roll

GOV.UK says that in England and Northern Ireland you can register to vote if you are a Commonwealth citizen with permission to enter or stay in the UK, and in Scotland and Wales if you are a citizen of any country with permission to stay. Nigeria is a Commonwealth member. Experian says electoral roll data helps lenders confirm your name and address, and that registration usually appears on your credit report within 30 days, except during the annual canvass (usually August to November), when it may not appear until 1 December. Details are in electoral registration for Nigerians in the UK.

Step 2: accounts in your name

  • A current account. HSBC notes that opening a UK bank account does not directly affect your credit score but helps establish a financial footprint.
  • Bills by direct debit. Equifax suggests putting household bills in your name where possible and paying by direct debit.
  • A phone contract, once you can get one, is a credit agreement reported to credit files; see phone contracts with no history.
  • Experian Boost, which Experian says can look at payments such as council tax and subscriptions from a connected current account. Not every lender uses it, and Experian says using it will not lower your score.

Step 3: one small card, used lightly

Experian describes credit builder cards as usually having low limits and high interest rates, and says using a small amount and repaying on time and in full each month can show responsible borrowing. It suggests keeping credit utilisation (the share of your limit you use) below 30%. Paying in full matters because it means the interest rate never applies to you. See how a credit builder card works.

A worked example

This is an illustration, not an offer. Suppose a card has a £300 limit. Keeping utilisation under 30% means a balance below £90 when the statement is produced. If you put £60 of groceries on it each month and a direct debit clears the full statement balance, utilisation is 20%, you pay no interest, and each month adds an on-time payment to your file.

What slows you down

  • Repeated applications. Equifax says each refused application is recorded and suggests leaving three to six months between applications if you keep being turned down.
  • Frequent moves. Experian says moving often can make your details harder to verify; register again each time you move.
  • Missed payments. One late payment on a new, short file carries a lot of weight.
  • Cash advances. Using a credit card to withdraw cash or fund a money transfer is often treated as a cash transaction, with a fee and interest from the day it is made. Barclaycard, for example, lists wire transfers and money orders as cash-like transactions.

A realistic timeline

WhenWhat to have done
Month 1UK current account open; electoral roll registration if eligible; statutory credit reports checked
Months 1 to 3Bills in your name on direct debit; phone on SIM-only or pay-as-you-go if a contract is refused
Months 3 to 6Apply for one credit builder or newcomer card after an eligibility check; pay in full each month
Months 6 to 12Keep the pattern; check your reports; consider a phone contract or a better card

Some lenders can look at a Nigerian credit history: HSBC UK says it can use credit history from selected countries, including Nigeria, when you apply for one of its credit cards. See does Nigerian credit history count in the UK.

Where Pryme fits

Building a UK file is a UK task. If you also keep money in Nigeria, a Pryme Personal Account can be opened from abroad and holds naira and pounds side by side, with Swap showing the rate and the fee before you approve. Pryme is not a bank. See the multicurrency account.

Questions people ask

How long does it take to build a credit score in the UK?

There is no fixed period. Electoral roll registration can appear within about 30 days, but a useful record of on-time payments takes several months, and many newcomers aim for six to twelve months of clean history before bigger applications.

Can Nigerians register on the UK electoral roll?

Yes, if you have permission to stay. GOV.UK allows Commonwealth citizens with permission to register in England and Northern Ireland, and any citizen with permission in Scotland and Wales. Nigeria is a Commonwealth member.

Does paying rent build my UK credit score?

Not automatically. Some rent reporting services exist, but ordinary rent paid to a landlord is not usually reported. Bills in your name and a credit card paid in full are more reliable.

Is a credit builder card worth it?

It can be, if you use a small part of the limit and repay in full each month by direct debit. If you carry a balance, the high interest rate makes it expensive.
