Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

South Africa

Transfer to Nigeria stuck in compliance review at my SA bank

Why South African banks hold outward payments to Nigeria for review, the documents that usually release them and how to avoid the next hold.

The short answer

SA banks hold payments to Nigeria to confirm they meet exchange control rules and to check the source and purpose of the money. A hold is usually released once you supply ID and permit, proof of address, payslips or statements showing where the funds came from, and a clear reason for the payment.

When a South African bank holds an outward payment to Nigeria, it is usually doing one of two jobs: confirming that the payment fits the exchange control rules it applies as an authorised dealer, or checking where the money came from and why it is going. Most holds are released once you give the bank what it asks for, which is usually a reason for the payment, proof of where the funds came from and identity documents. This guide explains why holds happen and how to answer them quickly.

Why SA banks review payments to Nigeria

  • Exchange control. South Africa still runs exchange controls through the South African Reserve Bank. The SARB's Currency and Exchanges Guidelines for Individuals (version dated 7 January 2026) set a single discretionary allowance of R1 million per calendar year for residents aged 18 and over with a green bar-coded or smart ID. Foreign nationals temporarily resident in South Africa are covered by a separate section, which allows transfers of funds accumulated during their stay if the source is substantiated and reasonable compared with local income.
  • Reporting. Every payment carries a SARB balance of payments reason code. Standard Bank's app FAQ gives 401 (Gifts) as an example. A code that does not match the payment is a common trigger for questions.
  • Anti-money laundering. Banks must understand a customer's source of funds. Large, sudden or frequent payments, or payments that do not fit your income, attract questions.
  • Destination risk. Nigeria was on the FATF grey list from February 2023 until the October 2025 plenary. A November 2025 client note from Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie said removal was likely to ease correspondent banking restrictions and reduce enhanced due diligence. It does not mean checks stop.

The documents that usually release a payment

What the bank asksWhat usually answers it
Who are you?Passport and valid permit, or SA ID, and proof of address
Where did the money come from?Recent payslips and bank statements showing the salary or income
Why are you sending it?A short written explanation, matched to the right BoP reason code
Who is receiving it?Recipient's full name, relationship, account details
Is it a one-off large amount?Evidence of the source: sale agreement, inheritance papers, loan agreement

For residents moving more than the allowance, SARS asks for its own evidence. Its page on supporting documents for an Approval for International Transfer (updated 22 October 2026) lists bank statements issued no more than 14 days before the application, a statement of assets and liabilities, and documents for the specific source, such as a signed loan agreement or a liquidation and distribution account for an inheritance. Banks often accept the same kind of evidence.

How to get a held payment moving

  1. Ask the bank, in writing, exactly which document is missing and the reference of the payment.
  2. Send everything in one reply: clear copies, in date, all pages of statements.
  3. Explain the purpose in one or two sentences. "Monthly support for my mother in Enugu" is better than "family".
  4. Confirm the BoP reason code that was used, and ask for it to be corrected if it is wrong.
  5. Keep a record of each contact. If the bank rejects the payment, ask whether the money has been returned to your account and whether any fees were deducted.

What the bank cannot ask you to do

A compliance hold is a request for information, not a fee. Be wary of anyone who calls about a held payment and asks you to pay a release charge, move money to another account or share your banking PIN or one-time code. Contact your bank through the number on its website or card, not a number given in an unexpected call or message, and confirm the hold is real before you send any documents.

Remittance apps work the same way. WorldRemit's transfer processing FAQ, for instance, says a held transfer may be awaiting documents or information, that documents must be government-issued, in date, clear and readable, and that security checks are usually released within an hour.

Avoiding the next hold

  • Send on a regular pattern if your support is regular.
  • Use the same recipient details each time, spelt exactly as the Nigerian bank holds them.
  • Keep payslips and statements for the past three months to hand.
  • Do not split one large payment into many small ones to stay under a limit. Banks look for that pattern.

Where Pryme fits

When a bank or a relative asks for proof, a verifiable receipt or statement helps. With Pryme, any customer can generate one through verifiable receipts, built with VerifyDoc.ai, and anyone can check that it is genuine and unaltered. See also what proof SA banks ask for and BoP reason codes for Nigeria.

Questions people ask

Why is my international payment to Nigeria pending at my SA bank?

Usually the bank needs to confirm the reason for the payment, the source of funds or your identity before releasing it.

What documents release a held payment?

Usually ID and permit, proof of address, payslips or bank statements, and a written reason for the payment.

How long can an SA bank hold my payment?

No official timeframe was found. Ask the bank in writing what is missing and send it in one reply.

Will my money come back if the payment is rejected?

Ask the bank to confirm the return and any fees deducted. Standard Bank says commission is not refundable.
