2018OjirehPrime Card

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

South Africa

What proof SA banks ask for before a transfer to Nigeria

Payslips, statements and permits: the source-of-funds documents SA banks and transfer services ask foreign nationals for, and why the SARB rules matter.

The short answer

SA banks and transfer services may ask foreign nationals for payslips, recent bank statements or other proof of where the money came from, plus ID, a valid permit and proof of address. SARB guidelines let temporary residents transfer funds accumulated in SA where the source is substantiated and reasonable against local income.

South African banks and money transfer services may ask a foreign national for proof of income or source of funds before a transfer to Nigeria, usually payslips, recent bank statements, an employment contract or proof of another income source, along with ID, a valid permit and proof of address. They ask because the SARB's exchange control guidelines let foreign nationals temporarily resident in South Africa transfer funds accumulated during their stay only where the source is substantiated and reasonable against their local income, and because anti-money laundering rules require banks to know where money comes from.

Why foreign nationals are asked more often

The SARB's Currency and Exchanges Guidelines for Individuals (version dated 7 January 2026) treat residents and foreign nationals differently. The R1 million single discretionary allowance is for residents aged 18 and over with a green bar-coded or smart ID. Foreign nationals temporarily resident in South Africa fall under a separate section, which lets them transfer funds accumulated during their stay if the source is substantiated and reasonable compared with their local income. In practice, that is the test a bank applies when it asks for payslips.

Some providers write the income test into their limits. Mukuru's South Africa page for sending to Nigeria says holders of a South African ID can send up to R1,000,000, while holders of a foreign ID can send up to 12 times their monthly income, with proof of income.

The documents that usually satisfy a request

Your situationWhat to provide
EmployedLast three payslips, bank statements showing salary, employment contract
Self-employed or freelancingInvoices, client payment statements, SARS registration or assessment
Savings built up over timeStatements showing the balance growing from income
One-off money (sale, gift, inheritance)Sale agreement, donor letter and their statement, or estate papers
StudentProof of funds paid in from home, bursary or allowance letters

Always add ID, a valid permit or visa and proof of address. Hello Paisa's FAQ, for example, asks for a foreign passport with a permit and proof of address at sign-up, and its higher limit levels depend on fuller verification.

What residents moving large sums are asked

For residents going above the allowance, SARS sets out its own evidence for an Approval for International Transfer. Its supporting documents page (updated 22 October 2026) lists material showing the source of the capital, a statement of assets and liabilities for the previous three tax years, and bank statements issued no more than 14 days before the application. Banks reviewing a large payment often ask for similar items.

Why the request can come late

A request for proof does not always come at sign-up. It can arrive after months of normal transfers, when your pattern changes: a larger amount, a new recipient, more frequent sends or a payment that does not fit your stated income. Providers' help pages describe this as a normal hold. WorldRemit's transfer processing FAQ, for example, says a transfer may wait for documents or information, and that documents must be government-issued, in date, clear and readable.

Answer the request fully and quickly. A half answer usually leads to a second request, and the transfer waits for both. If you think the request is unreasonable, ask which rule or policy it is based on; you are entitled to ask what is needed, even if the bank will not share every detail of its checks.

TriggerWhat usually helps
Larger amount than usualExplain the purpose and show where the extra money came from
New recipientState the relationship and the reason
More frequent sendsExplain the change, such as a relative in hospital
Amount above stated incomeStatements showing savings or the one-off source

Getting it right first time

  1. Send clear, complete copies: every page of a statement, not a cropped screenshot.
  2. Make sure names match across your ID, payslip, bank account and the transfer.
  3. Explain gaps briefly in writing: cash wages, a bonus month, savings from a previous job.
  4. Use the right reason for the payment, such as family support, and keep it consistent.
  5. If your income is in another name, such as a spouse's salary, explain the arrangement and include their statement with their consent.
  6. Keep a folder of the last three months' payslips and statements, so the next request takes minutes.

Where Pryme fits

When someone asks you to prove what you sent or received, a verifiable statement helps. With Pryme, any customer can generate a regular or a verifiable receipt or statement through verifiable receipts, built with VerifyDoc.ai, and anyone can check that a verifiable one is genuine and unaltered. See also limits for foreign nationals sending from SA and transfers held for compliance review.

Questions people ask

Why does my bank want my payslip to send money to Nigeria?

SARB rules let temporary residents transfer funds whose source is substantiated and reasonable against local income. Payslips show that.

How much can a foreigner send with Mukuru?

Mukuru's page says foreign ID holders can send up to 12 times their monthly income, with proof of income.

What if I am paid in cash?

Provide what you can: a letter from the employer, deposits on your statements and a written explanation.

Do I need proof of income for small transfers?

Often not, but providers set lower limits without full verification. Hello Paisa's FICA LITE level allows R3,000 a day.
