Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Student hostels near Nigerian universities: worth investing in?

How off-campus and PPP student hostel investments work in Nigeria, what drives demand, and the land, approval, insurance and policy risks for investors abroad.

The short answer

Demand is strong: UNILAG said in June 2025 it had about 10,000 bed spaces for more than 50,000 students. But returns depend on rents students can pay per session, occupancy outside term, clean land title and approvals, and competition from new campus hostels being built under public-private partnerships. A hostel is a business as much as a building, so it suits investors who can secure good title near a campus and appoint a capable local manager.

Student housing looks like an obvious bet: Nigerian universities admit far more students than they can house, and off-campus rooms near big campuses rarely stay empty in term. Diaspora investors are increasingly asked to fund hostels or buy rooms in hostel blocks. This guide explains how these investments work, what drives demand, and where the risks sit. It is general information, not investment advice.

What drives demand

The shortage is documented by the institutions themselves. At a June 2025 investor meeting, UNILAG's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, said the university had "only 10,000 bed spaces for over 50,000 students". A Nigeria Housing Market report on a federal hostel programme quoted YABATECH as having more than 20,000 students competing for about 2,600 bed spaces, and LASU's Vice-Chancellor saying the institution accommodates "only a small fraction" of students on campus. Rising campus costs push students outward too: TheCable reported in February 2026 that UNN students said hostel fees had risen sharply, with the university not responding.

Three ways to invest

ModelHow it worksMain risks
Build or buy an off-campus hostelYou own land and building near a campus and let rooms per sessionTitle, approvals, management, rent collection
Buy rooms in a developer's hostel blockYou own or lease units; the developer managesDeveloper delivery, title to individual rooms, management fees
On-campus PPPPrivate partner builds and runs a hostel on university land for a period, then hands it over (build-operate-transfer)Concession terms, rent controls, university relations; usually for larger investors

The public-private partnership push

The Nigeria Housing Market report describes a ₦250bn programme announced by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, coordinated through TETFund and the Ministry. It includes about ₦100bn for 500-bed hostels at more than 50 institutions and PPP projects of 1,200 to 1,500 beds at 24 institutions, at about ₦4bn each with roughly ₦3bn from private partners. The report gives the date as 15 May without a year, and its allocations do not add up to the headline figure, so treat the numbers as indicative. UNILAG's own release says its hostel PPP uses a build-operate-transfer model, with the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) acting as regulator.

For an off-campus investor, this cuts both ways. It confirms the shortage, but new on-campus beds may compete with your rooms on price and convenience within a few years.

Worked example

Example only, with invented figures. A 20-room block near a federal university, built for ₦120,000,000 including land.

LineAmount
Rent per room per session (example)₦700,000
Rooms let (18 of 20, 90%)₦12,600,000
Manager and caretaker−₦1,800,000
Power, water, waste (owner-paid share)−₦1,500,000
Repairs and repainting−₦900,000
Security−₦600,000
Insurance−₦300,000
Net income₦7,500,000
Yield on ₦120m6.25%

A long strike or a university shutdown that empties the area for months can hit income hard, because students may refuse to renew rooms they cannot use. Model at least one bad year.

Land and approval risks

  • Title near campuses. Land around universities is often family or community land, sometimes under government acquisition for the university's expansion. Search the registry and check acquisition status before paying; see documents to see before paying for land.
  • Approvals. A hostel is a multi-occupancy building; it needs planning and building control approval for that use. In Lagos, see building permits; other states have their own agencies.
  • Insurance. Section 65(2) of the Insurance Act, as printed in the 2004 Laws of the Federation, includes a hostel in the definition of a public building that must be insured, with owner's or occupier's liability to users.
  • Fire and safety. Many rooms, cooking and generators in one block raise risk; design exits and electrical work with registered professionals.

Running it from abroad

Hostel income comes once or twice a year, usually at the start of a session, from many small tenants. That suits a written tenancy for each student or guardian, a manager paid a fixed fee rather than a share of cash collected, and rent paid into an account, not to the caretaker. For contractor choices, see contractor or direct labour; for tenancy management, being a landlord from abroad.

What to check first

  1. How many students attend the institution, and how many beds are on campus or being built?
  2. What do comparable rooms nearby charge per session, and how full are they?
  3. Is the land free of government acquisition and family disputes?
  4. Does the building have approval for hostel use?
  5. Who will manage, and how will rent reach you?

Where Pryme fits

Hostel rent arrives in bursts and costs run all year. A Pryme account lets you hold the naira, pay the manager and suppliers, and issue tenants verifiable receipts that they and their parents can check.

Questions people ask

Is student hostel investment profitable in Nigeria?

It can be near large campuses with few beds, but returns depend on rent per session, occupancy, management and the risk of closures. Our example gives about 6.25% before tax.

How many students lack hostel space at Nigerian universities?

UNILAG said in June 2025 it had about 10,000 bed spaces for more than 50,000 students.

What is a PPP student hostel?

A private partner builds and runs a hostel on university land for a set period before handing it over, a build-operate-transfer model.

Do student hostels need insurance in Nigeria?

The Insurance Act includes hostels among public buildings that must be insured, including owner or occupier liability to users.
