Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Italy

Italia Startup Visa: can a Nigerian founder apply?

The Italia Startup Visa, run under MIMIT, is aimed at non-EU founders of innovative startups. How it works, what to prepare from Nigeria and what to check.

The short answer

Yes: the Italia Startup Visa, run under Italy’s Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT), is aimed at non-EU founders who want to set up an innovative startup in Italy, so a Nigerian national can apply. The application is assessed by the programme’s committee, which issues a clearance (nulla osta) that you then use to apply for a self-employment visa at the Italian mission; check the current funding, document and timing requirements on the official Italia Startup Visa portal before you prepare anything.

Nigerian founders look at Italy for good reasons: a large consumer market, manufacturing and design strengths, and an EU base. The Italia Startup Visa is the route designed for founders of innovative startups who do not have an employment offer. It is a narrower route than many blog posts suggest. It is for building an innovative company, not for running a shop or a trading business, and the committee looks at the project, not just the money.

How the route works

  1. Online application to the Italia Startup Visa programme with your business plan and supporting documents.
  2. Committee assessment. The committee assesses whether the project qualifies as an innovative startup and whether you have the resources to carry it out.
  3. Nulla osta. If approved, you receive a clearance to use in your visa application.
  4. Visa for self-employment at the Italian embassy or consulate responsible for where you live.
  5. Arrival and permit. In Italy you apply for the residence permit and set up the company.

Is your project an “innovative startup”?

This is where most applications are won or lost. Italian law defines innovative startups with conditions on age, size and innovation (such as research spending, qualified staff or owning intellectual property). Before you apply, check your plan against the current definition and ask yourself plainly:

  • Is the product or service new, technology-based or research-led, rather than an existing service moved to Italy?
  • Can you show evidence: a prototype, users, patents or a team with relevant degrees?
  • Is there a credible plan for the company in Italy, with Italian costs, not Nigerian ones?

Documents to prepare from Nigeria

Whatever the programme asks for, Nigerian documents used in Italy normally need translation and legalisation. Plan for:

  • Degree certificates and transcripts. The Italian Consulate General in Lagos’s legalisation checklist lists WAEC (not NECO), degree, transcript and birth certificate for study files, all translated into Italian, with proof of payment for prior legalisation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.
  • Which Italian office. The Embassy of Italy in Abuja handles documents issued by authorities in the FCT, Kaduna, Kano, Niger, Plateau and Katsina; the Consulate General in Lagos handles the other states. Appointments are booked by email, and the fee is disclosed at the appointment.
  • Proof of funds. Bank statements and, where funds come from investors, their commitment letters. Keep the source of funds documented.
  • Business plan in English or Italian, as the portal requires.

Our guides to using Nigerian certificates in Italy and sworn translations cover the details.

Common reasons applications struggle

  • A business that is not innovative. Import-export, a restaurant or a consultancy can be good businesses, but the committee assesses innovation, not viability alone.
  • A plan written for Nigeria. Show Italian costs, Italian customers or partners, and why the company must be in Italy.
  • Funds that cannot be traced. Money that appears in an account shortly before the application, with no explanation, invites questions. Keep investor letters, sale agreements or savings history.
  • Documents that are not legalised. A degree that has not been through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja and the Italian mission can delay the visa stage even after a nulla osta.
  • Team gaps. If you are applying with co-founders, each person’s role and documents should be clear.

If you are already in Italy

Founders who already hold another permit, such as study, sometimes ask to convert rather than start from Nigeria. Whether and how that works is a permit question; see converting to a lavoro autonomo permit and check the Italia Startup Visa portal for its in-country route. Do not let an existing permit expire while waiting for a decision.

Costs after arrival

Once the company exists it pays Italian registration costs like any other. One chamber’s page lists €65 stamp duty for a società di capitali filing (Cagliari-Oristano, checked Oct 2026), and companies pay an annual chamber fee from €200, rising with turnover (EC News, June 2026). Setting up the company itself is covered in starting an srl as a non-EU citizen.

What to check first

  • The current requirements on the official Italia Startup Visa portal, including funding and documents.
  • Whether your project meets the innovative-startup definition.
  • Which Italian mission in Nigeria will issue your visa and legalise your papers.
  • How long legalisation of your degree will take; start early.

Where Pryme fits

Founders often keep revenue and costs on both sides. A Pryme Business Account, opened from any country, holds NGN, EUR, USD and GBP with local account details; see business multicurrency. Outside Nigeria, Pryme’s activities are carried out through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Can Nigerians apply for the Italia Startup Visa?

Yes. The programme is aimed at non-EU founders of innovative startups. Check current requirements on the official portal.

How much money do I need for the Italia Startup Visa?

We could not confirm the current funding requirement for this guide. The official Italia Startup Visa portal under MIMIT states it.

Can I open a shop with the startup visa?

It is designed for innovative startups, not ordinary retail or trading businesses. Other self-employment routes may suit a shop.

Where do I legalise my Nigerian degree for Italy?

After Ministry of Foreign Affairs legalisation, at the Embassy of Italy in Abuja for FCT, Kaduna, Kano, Niger, Plateau and Katsina documents, or the Consulate General in Lagos for other states.
