Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

Sole trader or limited company: a choice for Nigerians in the UK

Starting a business in the UK? How sole traders and limited companies differ on liability, tax and paperwork, and the visa point to settle first.

The short answer

A sole trader and the business are legally the same person, with unlimited liability for its debts and Income Tax plus National Insurance on profits through Self Assessment. A limited company is a separate legal person: owners' liability is limited to their investment, the company pays Corporation Tax (19% to 25% as at October 2026), and directors are taxed on what they take out. Before either, check that your visa lets you do the work.

Nigerians in the UK start businesses of every kind: catering, hair, care, consulting, logistics, food imports. The first legal choice is usually between working as a sole trader and setting up a limited company. GOV.UK's guide to business structures sets out the differences; this article applies them to the questions diaspora founders most often ask.

Check the visa first

The structure does not change what your immigration permission allows. GOV.UK says Student visa holders cannot be self-employed, which rules out working as a sole trader. Skilled Worker visa holders may work up to 20 hours a week in their own business alongside their sponsored job, on conditions, and GOV.UK says that can include working as a sole trader. Founders on other routes should check their own visa conditions; see UK companies and Nigerian visas.

The differences, side by side

Sole traderLimited company
Legal statusYou and the business are the sameA separate legal person
LiabilityUnlimited: you are personally responsible for business debtsLimited to the value of your investment
Tax on profitsIncome Tax through Self Assessment, plus National InsuranceCorporation Tax paid by the company
Taking money outProfits are yoursSalary, dividends or a directors' loan, each taxed its own way
Setting upRegister for Self Assessment if you earn more than £1,000 in a tax yearRegister with Companies House before trading; £100 online as at October 2026
Ongoing paperworkRecords from day one and a tax returnAnnual accounts, company tax return, confirmation statement
NameYour own name or a trading nameMust follow company naming rules

Both structures can take on employees and both must register for VAT if they meet the requirements, GOV.UK says.

The tax numbers, as at October 2026

For a sole trader, GOV.UK lists Class 4 National Insurance at 6% on profits between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% above, for 2026 to 2027, with Class 2 contributions now voluntary at £3.65 a week. Income Tax is charged on profits at the rates on GOV.UK.

For a company, GOV.UK lists Corporation Tax at 19% on profits of £50,000 or less and 25% on profits over £250,000, with marginal relief in between. Directors then pay Income Tax and National Insurance depending on how they take money out.

A worked example

Example only, simplified: a business makes £30,000 profit in a year.

  • As a sole trader, Class 4 National Insurance would be 6% of (£30,000 minus £12,570), which is 6% of £17,430, or £1,045.80. Income Tax would be due on top.
  • As a limited company paying no salary, Corporation Tax at 19% would be £5,700, leaving £24,300 in the company. Any money the owner then takes out is taxed again as salary or dividends.

The example shows why the comparison is not simple: the company's bill comes in two stages, and the result depends on how much you draw and how. An accountant can model your own figures; our guide to paying yourself as a director explains the options.

Starting small and switching later

Many founders begin as sole traders to test an idea and form a company once the business is steady. That path is open: nothing stops a sole trader registering a company later. When you do, the company becomes a new legal person, so it needs its own bank account, its own contracts and invoices in its own name, and its own registration for Corporation Tax. Customers who paid you personally will need the new details.

Records from day one

GOV.UK says sole traders keep records from the day they start trading. Keep every invoice, receipt and bank statement, note what each payment was for, and keep income from Nigeria-based clients clearly labelled. Good records make the later switch easier, because an accountant can see what the business earned and spent before the company existed.

Points Nigerian founders weigh

  • Contracts and clients. Some larger UK clients prefer to contract with a company.
  • Banking. A company needs its own business account, which can be harder to open, especially with links abroad.
  • Privacy. A company's registered office and officers appear on the public register.
  • Moving back. A company can keep trading after you return to Nigeria, but raises tax residence questions; see keeping a UK company after moving to Nigeria.
  • Business in Nigeria. If the trade is mostly in Nigeria, compare the Nigerian options: business name or limited company in Nigeria.

Where Pryme fits

Whichever structure you choose, separate business money from personal money. A Pryme Business Account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local account details for each, and invoicing helps you bill customers in the currency they pay in. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's activities are carried out through regulated partners. This page is information, not tax advice.

Questions people ask

Should I be a sole trader or limited company in the UK?

It depends on liability, how much profit you expect, how you will take money out and what clients want. Check first that your visa allows the work.

Can I be a sole trader on a Student visa?

No. GOV.UK says Student visa holders cannot be self-employed.

What is the Corporation Tax rate in 2026?

As at October 2026, GOV.UK lists 19% on profits of £50,000 or less and 25% over £250,000, with marginal relief in between.

When must a sole trader register for Self Assessment?

GOV.UK says if you earn more than £1,000 from self-employment in a tax year, which runs from 6 April to 5 April.
