Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Small business

Business name or limited company: which to register in Nigeria

Business name or private limited company? How liability, tax, CAC filings and credibility differ, and which suits a small Nigerian business.

The short answer

Register a business name if you are testing an idea alone, keep costs low and accept that you are personally liable for the business's debts. Register a private limited company if you want your personal assets protected, plan to bring in partners or investors, or will bid for larger contracts. A small company can also qualify for 0% company income tax under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, while a business name's profit is taxed as the owner's personal income.

The core difference: who owns the debts

A business name (often called an enterprise or sole proprietorship) is a trading name registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). It does not create a separate legal person. You and the business are the same thing in law, so if the business owes a supplier or a landlord, they can come after your personal savings, car or property.

A private limited company (the "Ltd" after the name) is a separate legal person. It can own assets, sign contracts, sue and be sued in its own name. Shareholders' liability is limited to what they have agreed to pay for their shares. That protection is the main reason most growing businesses incorporate.

Side-by-side comparison

How tax differs under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025

From 1 January 2026, the reformed tax laws changed the sums for many owners. A small company is one with annual gross turnover of ₦100 million or less and total fixed assets not exceeding ₦250 million. It pays 0% company income tax, is exempt from capital gains tax and does not pay the 4% development levy that other companies pay. Businesses providing professional services are excluded from the small company definition, whatever their size.

A business name has no separate tax identity for income tax. Its profit is added to the owner's income and taxed under personal income tax. Individuals with ₦800,000 or less a year are exempt, and rates rise to a top rate of 25%. See how sole traders pay tax in Nigeria for the detail.

Example: the same profit, two structures

Example only. Ada sells snacks and makes ₦6 million profit on ₦40 million turnover, with modest equipment. As a business name, the ₦6 million is her personal income and is taxed on the personal bands. As a limited company that qualifies as small, the company pays 0% company income tax on that profit. Ada still pays personal tax on whatever salary she draws from the company, and the company still has to keep records and file returns. Incorporation is not a way to make tax disappear, but for a profitable small company it can reduce the bill.

Credibility, contracts and banking

Many corporates, government agencies and larger buyers prefer or require a limited company before they award contracts. Under the reforms, there is also a ₦5 million penalty for awarding contracts to people or entities not registered for tax, so buyers increasingly ask for a Tax ID alongside a CAC certificate, and many run checks like those in how to verify a Nigerian company. A company also makes it easier to separate your money, because the business account is clearly the company's, not yours. Read how to separate business and personal money.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose a business name if you are a one-person trade, your risk of large debts is low, and you want the fewest filings while you test demand.
  • Choose a limited company if you will take on stock on credit, sign leases, employ staff, take investment, or work with corporate and government buyers.
  • Professional services (for example consulting, legal or accounting work) should check carefully: they cannot be treated as small companies for the tax exemptions, so the tax case for incorporating is weaker, though liability protection still matters.
  • You can start as a business name and incorporate later. The business name and company are separate registrations, so plan to move contracts, accounts and stock across.

Step-by-step guides: registering a business name and registering a private limited company.

Running costs to expect each year

A business name has fewer moving parts: an annual return to CAC, personal tax on the profit and your own records. A limited company adds a company annual return, a company income tax return within six months of its year end, board decisions recorded in writing and, for larger companies, audited accounts. Small companies under CAMA 2020 need not appoint auditors or a company secretary, which keeps costs down. Budget either for a few hours of your own time each quarter or for an accountant at year end.

Where Pryme fits

Once registered, both a business name and a limited company can open a Pryme Business Account, which keeps business money apart from your personal account and holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local details for each. It comes with a Finance agent and a Compliance agent that prepare work such as filing reminders and records; a person approves above a set ceiling and actions are recorded. See how it works or open an account.

Questions people ask

Is business name registration enough to open a corporate account in Nigeria?

Many banks and fintechs open business accounts for registered business names, but the account sits under the owner's identity because the business is not a separate person. A company account is held by the company itself.

Can one person register a limited company in Nigeria?

Yes. Under CAMA 2020 a small company can have a single shareholder and a single director, and it is not required to appoint a company secretary.

Does a business name pay company income tax?

No. Profit from a business name is taxed as the owner's personal income. Company income tax applies to companies, with qualifying small companies taxed at 0%.

Can I convert my business name to a limited company?

You register a new company and then move the trade into it. The business name is a separate registration, so contracts, accounts and assets have to be transferred to the company.
