Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to register a business name with CAC, step by step

A practical walk-through of registering a business name with the Corporate Affairs Commission, what you need, and what to do the week after approval.

The short answer

You register a business name online through the Corporate Affairs Commission's company registration portal: create an account, run a name availability search, reserve the name, complete the registration form with the proprietor's details and nature of business, pay the filing fee shown on the portal, and download your certificate once approved. After that you need a Tax ID, a business account, and a diary note to file annual returns before 30 June every year.

Before you start: what you need

  • Two or three name options, in order of preference. Avoid names identical or too similar to existing businesses, and words that suggest government links or regulated activity (bank, insurance, university) unless you hold the relevant approval.
  • Each proprietor's full name, residential address, phone number, email and date of birth.
  • A valid means of identification for each proprietor and their National Identification Number (NIN).
  • A clear description of the nature of the business, such as "retail of foodstuffs" or "hair and beauty services".
  • The principal place of business address, which can be your home if you trade from there.
  • A recent passport photograph and signature for each proprietor, in the format the portal requests.

Step by step on the CAC portal

  1. Create an account on the CAC's online registration portal using your email address.
  2. Search name availability. Enter your preferred names. CAC checks them against the register and its naming rules.
  3. Reserve the approved name. Pay the reservation fee shown on the portal. A reserved name is held for a limited period, so do not delay the next step.
  4. Complete the business name registration form. Enter proprietor details, the nature of business, the business address and the commencement date.
  5. Upload documents: identification, signature and passport photograph for each proprietor.
  6. Pay the filing fee. The amount is shown on the portal before you pay; check it there rather than relying on a figure from a blog or an agent.
  7. Track approval in your dashboard. If CAC queries something, respond through the portal.
  8. Download the certificate and status report once approved. Keep digital and printed copies.

Common reasons applications are queried

  • The name is too close to an existing registered name or trademark.
  • The nature of business is vague ("general contracts" on its own often draws questions).
  • Identity documents are blurred, expired or do not match the details typed in.
  • The address is incomplete. Give a street, area, local government and state.

The first week after approval

1. Get your Tax ID

From 1 January 2026, the unified Tax ID replaced previously issued TINs. For businesses it is linked to the CAC registration number and is generated through the Tax ID portal run by the Joint Revenue Board and the Nigeria Revenue Service. Our guide to getting a Tax ID for your business covers retrieval and common problems.

2. Open a business account

Take your certificate, status report, identification and Tax ID to open an account that is used only for the business. This is the single most useful habit for clean records, and it makes collecting money simpler; see how to get paid in Nigeria. See how to separate business and personal money.

3. Set up a simple record system

The Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 requires books or records to be kept whether or not you are liable to tax, in English, for at least six years. A notebook and a folder of receipts is a start; a spreadsheet or app is better. Our bookkeeping guide gives a template.

4. Diary the annual return

Business names must file annual returns with CAC before 30 June every year, even if the business made no sales. Missing filings leads to penalties and can lead to the name being removed from the register. Read CAC annual returns explained.

Keep these documents together

  • Certificate of registration and status report.
  • CAC portal login details, held by you.
  • Tax ID confirmation.
  • Proof of payment for every CAC fee.
  • A note of your annual return date.

Is a business name the right choice?

A business name is quick and suits a one-person trade testing demand, but you remain personally liable for its debts and its profit is taxed as your personal income. If you expect to take stock on credit, employ people or bid for corporate work, compare it with a company first in business name or limited company.

Example: a realistic timeline

Example only. Tunde, a phone-repair technician in Ibadan, searches and reserves "Tundex Phone Clinic" on a Monday, completes the form and uploads documents the same evening, answers a query about his address on Wednesday and downloads his certificate the following week. He retrieves his Tax ID, opens a business account and moves all customer payments to it from the first of the month. Approval times vary; build in a buffer before any contract that needs the certificate.

Where Pryme fits

With your certificate and Tax ID in hand, you can open a Pryme Business Account from any country. Customers can pay you by bank transfer, including through bank-transfer checkout at 0.5% capped at ₦2,000, and you can issue receipts customers can verify through Pryme's partnership with VerifyDoc.ai. Open an account when you are ready.

Questions people ask

How long does CAC business name registration take?

It varies with the queue and whether your application is queried. Many are approved within days, but allow extra time and respond quickly to any query in the portal.

Can I register a business name without an agent?

Yes. The CAC portal is designed for self-service. Agents can help but are optional.

Can I use my house address for business name registration?

Yes, if you trade from there. Give a complete address with street, area, local government and state.

Do I need to file annual returns if my business name made no money?

Yes. Business names file annual returns with CAC before 30 June every year regardless of trading results.
