Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Small business

Bookkeeping for small businesses in Nigeria: a simple system

The records Nigerian law expects you to keep, a weekly routine that takes under an hour, and a template you can start today in a notebook or sheet.

The short answer

Good bookkeeping for a small Nigerian business means recording every sale and every expense, keeping the receipt or proof behind each one, and matching your records to your bank statement every week. The Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 requires books to be kept in English for at least six years, whether or not you owe tax. A notebook works, but a spreadsheet or accounting app with a separate business account is far easier.

What the law expects

Under the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, every person must maintain books or records of accounts whether or not they are liable to tax. Records must be kept in English and retained for not less than six years after the year of assessment they relate to. If you employ staff, the minimum wage law also requires wage records, kept for three years.

The five records every small business needs

  1. Sales log: date, customer, what was sold, amount, how paid (cash, transfer, POS) and reference.
  2. Expenses log: date, supplier, what for, amount, how paid, and a receipt reference.
  3. Money owed to you (debtors): who, how much, invoice date, due date.
  4. Money you owe (creditors): supplier, amount, due date.
  5. Assets list: equipment, vehicles and furniture with purchase date and cost. This also helps you check the ₦250 million fixed asset limit in the small company tax test.

A simple template

DateTypeDescriptionIn (₦)Out (₦)MethodProof
02 OctSaleCatering, 50 packs, Mrs Bello150,000TransferBank ref
02 OctExpenseRice and oil, market62,000TransferReceipt 014
03 OctExpenseDiesel18,000CashReceipt 015
04 OctSaleWalk-in sales41,500CashDaily tally

Example only. Use one row per transaction. Group expense types (stock, rent, wages, transport, utilities, data) so you can total them at month end.

Notebook, spreadsheet or app?

OptionGood forWatch out for
NotebookMarket traders and very small cash businessesHard to total, easy to lose; photograph pages weekly
SpreadsheetMost small businessesBack it up; lock formulas so totals do not break
Accounting appBusinesses with staff, stock or many transfersCheck it exports your data and that you can read reports

Whichever you use, the routine matters more than the tool. Fifteen minutes on the same day each week beats a weekend of catching up at year end. If someone else keeps the books, review the month-end numbers yourself; you remain responsible for the records.

Cash businesses: a daily close

At closing time, count the cash, add up POS and transfer receipts, and write the totals in the sales log. Note any money taken out for stock or change. Bank surplus cash regularly so the bank statement tells most of the story.

A weekly routine under an hour

  1. Download the week's business account statement.
  2. Tick each bank line against your sales and expenses logs. Add anything missing.
  3. Count cash in hand and compare it with cash sales minus cash spent. Investigate differences early.
  4. Photograph or file every receipt, named by date and number.
  5. Update who owes you and send reminders. See getting customers to pay on time.

Matching your records to the bank statement is called reconciliation. For more on it, see payment reconciliation in Nigeria.

Month end: three numbers that matter

Turnover
Total sales for the month. Watch the running total against the ₦100 million small company and VAT thresholds.
Profit
Sales minus business expenses. This is what tax is based on.
Cash position
What is in the bank and cash box, against what you must pay in the next few weeks.

Mistakes that cause trouble later

  • Mixing personal and business money. It makes profit impossible to see. Read how to separate business and personal money.
  • Not recording cash. Cash sales and cash spending vanish from the picture unless written down daily.
  • Recording drawings as expenses. Money you take for yourself is not a business cost.
  • Throwing away receipts before six years have passed.
  • Waiting until year end. Rebuilding a year from memory is slow and inaccurate.

Example: what good records reveal

Example only. A small bakery thinks it makes about ₦400,000 a month. After four weeks of proper logs, the owner sees sales of ₦1.9 million, ingredients of ₦1.1 million, wages of ₦280,000, diesel of ₦210,000 and other costs of ₦90,000, leaving ₦220,000. Diesel is the surprise, so she reprices two products and changes her baking schedule.

Year end in five steps

  1. Check that every month has been reconciled to the bank statement.
  2. Count stock and value it at cost.
  3. List who owes you and whom you owe at the year end date.
  4. Update the assets list with anything bought or sold.
  5. Total sales, expenses and profit for the year, then hand the file to your accountant or use it for your return.

If these steps take a day rather than a month, your weekly routine is working.

Good records also make it easier to answer questions from a lender, a buyer of your business or a tax officer quickly and with evidence, rather than from memory.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account gives you a clean statement to reconcile against, and its Finance agent can prepare categorised transaction lists and month-end summaries for you to check and approve. For a deeper look at automation, see can AI do your bookkeeping? You can also generate regular or verifiable statements through Pryme's partnership with VerifyDoc.ai.

Questions people ask

How long should I keep business records in Nigeria?

At least six years after the year of assessment they relate to, under the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025.

Do I need an accountant for bookkeeping as a small business?

Not for day-to-day records. Many owners keep their own books and use an accountant for year-end accounts and tax returns.

Can I keep my business records in a notebook?

Yes, provided they are complete, in English and kept for six years. A spreadsheet or app is easier to total and back up.

What records do I need if my business makes no profit?

The same records. The law requires books to be kept whether or not you are liable to tax.
