Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Payment reconciliation in Nigeria: matching every transfer

A practical routine for matching every Nigerian bank transfer to an order or invoice: matching rules, exceptions, WHT short-payments and month-end.

Part of the guideHow to get paid in Nigeria: transfers, checkout and invoices

The short answer

Payment reconciliation means proving that every naira received matches an order, invoice or customer, and that every expected payment has arrived. In Nigeria the hard part is transfers with blank or vague narrations, so the reliable fix is to give each customer or order its own account number, confirm payments from your provider's records rather than screenshots, and run a daily three-way check between bank, provider and sales records with a named owner for exceptions.

A business that sells on credit, takes deposits or collects by transfer is only as good as its matching. Unmatched money means goods held back from customers who have paid, reminders sent to customers who have not done anything wrong, and month-end accounts that do not close. This article sets out a routine that works at Nigerian volumes. It builds on the reconciliation section of our guide to getting paid in Nigeria.

Why Nigerian transfers are hard to match

NIP transfers are fast and final, but they carry very little data: an amount, the sender's name as their bank holds it, and an optional free-text narration. In practice:

  • Many customers leave the narration blank or type something like "payment" or a nickname.
  • Payers use a spouse's, employer's or friend's account, so the sender name does not match your customer record.
  • Some sending institutions truncate or reformat names.
  • Several customers pay identical amounts on the same day.
  • Business customers deduct withholding tax, so the amount is lower than the invoice.

Each of these turns a five-second match into a phone call. At 20 payments a day you can absorb that. At 500 you cannot.

Matching rules, from strongest to weakest

Set your system, or your team, to try these in order and stop at the first confident match.

RuleHow it worksConfidence
Account numberPayment arrived in a virtual account issued to one customer or one orderVery high
Provider referencePayment carries a checkout or invoice reference generated by your providerVery high
Exact amount plus reference in narrationCustomer typed the invoice number and paid the exact sumHigh
Exact amount plus known senderSender name matches a customer with exactly one open invoice for that sumMedium
Amount within WHT toleranceAmount equals invoice less 2%, 5% or 10%, from a known corporate payerMedium; confirm with credit note
Amount onlyNothing else matchesLow; treat as an exception

The first two rules need no human at all, which is why virtual accounts and per-order checkouts pay for themselves at volume. The last rule should never trigger an automatic match.

A daily reconciliation routine

  1. Capture. Record every payment notification from your provider as it arrives, after verifying its signature. Store the provider's transaction ID so a repeated notification cannot be recorded twice.
  2. Match. Apply the rules above automatically, and mark each payment as matched, partially matched or unmatched.
  3. Compare three ways. Each morning, compare yesterday's provider transaction list, your bank statement and your sales or invoicing records. Totals should agree; differences are your exception list.
  4. Work exceptions. Give one named person ownership. Contact payers only after checking every rule, and record the outcome against the payment.
  5. Close the day. Note unmatched items carried forward, with an age. Anything older than a set number of days goes to a manager.
  6. Month-end. Reconcile the bank balance to the ledger, list open items, and match withholding tax deductions to credit notes received.

Worked example: a distributor

A drinks distributor receives 420 transfers on a Monday totalling ₦61.3 million. Before changing anything, its two accounts officers matched about 70% automatically on amount and name, leaving 126 exceptions and roughly a day and a half of work. After giving each of its 300 retailers a dedicated virtual account, 392 payments match on account number. Of the remaining 28, 19 are corporate customers paying invoices less 2% withholding tax, which match within tolerance pending credit notes. Nine need a phone call. The same team now finishes by mid-morning.

Putting a number on the problem

Before choosing tools, measure where you are. For one normal week, count the payments received, the share matched without human help, the minutes spent on each exception and the number of customers contacted about a payment they had already made. Multiply exception time by staff cost to get a weekly figure. Then add the less visible costs: deliveries held back, duplicate reminders and late month-end closes. Most businesses find the per-payment fee for virtual accounts or a transfer checkout is far smaller than the hours it replaces.

If you reconcile through an API

Do not rely on the customer's browser returning to your site to mark an order paid. Use the provider's server-to-server notification, check its signature, and look up the transaction with the provider before acting on large amounts. Keep a scheduled job that pulls the provider's list for the previous day and flags anything your system has not recorded.

The exceptions that keep coming back

Short payment
Check withholding tax first. If the gap is 2%, 5% or 10% of the invoice from a business customer, request the credit note. Otherwise ask for the balance.
Overpayment
Refund or hold as credit by written agreement; never leave it unexplained in suspense.
Duplicate payment
Confirm with the payer and refund promptly; record the refund against the original.
Payment with no matching customer
Hold, try to trace the sender through your bank, and refund to source if unclaimed after your stated period.
One payment for several invoices
Allocate oldest first unless the customer says otherwise, and confirm the allocation in writing.
Recalled or frozen funds
Reverse the match, flag the customer, and keep sale records for your bank.

Withholding tax deserves its own tracking, because the money you did not receive is still yours as a tax credit. Our article on withholding tax credit notes explains how to recover them. If you accept cards too, chargebacks add a further exception type; see chargebacks in Nigeria.

Controls that make reconciliation trustworthy

  • Never mark an order paid on a customer's screenshot or forwarded alert.
  • Separate duties: the person who matches payments should not be the person who issues refunds.
  • Require a second approver for refunds and write-offs above a threshold.
  • Keep an audit trail of every manual match: who, when and why.
  • Review the unmatched list weekly with a manager, not only at month-end.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme also offers invoicing for business accounts; check its page for what the current release covers before you build a process around it. Business accounts also come with agents built and certified by Pryme Intelligence, a separate company: an agent prepares the work inside a mandate with a ceiling you set, nothing moves without approval, above the ceiling a person decides, and every step is recorded on an audit trail. In Nigeria, Naira deposits are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank, licensed by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit. For the wider picture, see the payments guide.

Questions people ask

How do I match bank transfers to customers in Nigeria?

Give each customer or order its own account number or reference so the payment identifies itself. For the rest, match on reference, then exact amount and known sender, and treat amount-only matches as exceptions to check.

What is three-way reconciliation for payments?

Comparing your payment provider's transaction list, your bank statement and your sales or invoice records for the same period. Differences between any two of them are the items to investigate.

Why is a customer's payment less than the invoice?

For business customers, withholding tax is the usual reason, typically 2%, 5% or 10% depending on the service. Ask for the credit note, because it counts towards your own tax.

How often should a small business reconcile payments?

Daily if you take more than a handful of transfers, with a fuller review at month-end. Daily checks catch missed notifications and fraud while they are still easy to trace.
