Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Virtual accounts in Nigeria: how businesses use them

What a virtual account is in Nigeria, dedicated vs dynamic, what they cost, the BVN/NIN rule, and how schools, landlords and sellers use them.

Part of the guideHow to get paid in Nigeria: transfers, checkout and invoices

The short answer

A virtual account in Nigeria is a real 10-digit NUBAN account number that sends money into a business's main account while identifying exactly who paid. Businesses give each customer a dedicated number, or each order a dynamic one, so payments match themselves instead of being sorted by hand. Fees are usually charged per payment received, and CBN rules require a BVN or NIN behind customer-level accounts.

A virtual account is a normal Nigerian account number with one job: to tell you who sent the money. A customer pays it from any bank app exactly as they would pay a person. The funds land in your main business account, and the number they paid into identifies them. It is one of the tools covered in our guide to getting paid in Nigeria, and for most businesses that take transfers it is the single biggest fix for unmatched payments.

This article explains how virtual accounts work, the two main types, what they cost, and how different kinds of business put them to use.

How a virtual account works

Every Nigerian bank account has a 10-digit Nigeria Uniform Bank Account Number (NUBAN), a scheme the CBN introduced in 2010. A provider such as a bank, microfinance bank or licensed payment company can issue extra NUBANs that do not hold a balance of their own. When someone transfers to one, the money is credited to the business's settlement account and the provider records which virtual number received it.

Because most transfers in Nigeria travel over NIBSS Instant Payment (NIP), the payer sees the business's name during name enquiry, the money arrives in seconds, and the provider can notify the business straight away. Our explainer on how NIP moves money between banks covers that journey step by step.

  1. The business asks its provider to create a virtual account, usually through an API or dashboard, and links it to a customer, order or invoice.
  2. The customer transfers to that number from any bank, fintech or USSD channel.
  3. The provider credits the business's main account and records the payment against the virtual number.
  4. The provider sends a notification, typically a signed webhook, with the amount, sender details and reference.
  5. The business's system marks the order or invoice as paid without anyone reading a bank statement.

Dedicated versus dynamic accounts

Providers use different names, but there are two patterns. Choose by how often the same customer pays you.

Dedicated (static) virtual accountDynamic virtual account
Issued toOne customer, permanentlyOne order or invoice
LifespanStays open until closedOften expires after minutes or hours, or after one payment
Best forRent, school fees, subscriptions, wallets, distributorsE-commerce checkout, one-off invoices, event tickets
AmountAny amount, any number of timesOften locked to the order amount
Identity checksCustomer's BVN or NIN usually requiredOften issued in the business's name for the order
MatchingBy customer; you still match to the right invoiceBy order; the account is the reference

A dedicated account works like giving each customer their own till. A dynamic account works like a one-time payment slip. Many businesses use both: dedicated numbers for regular payers and dynamic numbers at checkout. A bank transfer checkout is usually a dynamic virtual account wrapped in a payment page.

The BVN and NIN rule

Since March 2024, the CBN has required that accounts and wallets without a Bank Verification Number (BVN) or National Identification Number (NIN) cannot transact. For virtual accounts issued in a customer's name, providers therefore collect one of these at creation. Plan for it in your sign-up flow: ask for the BVN or NIN once, explain why, and store only what your provider and data protection rules allow.

Dynamic accounts created per order are often issued under the business's own identity, which is why they need no customer ID. Check with your provider which model it uses, because it changes what you must collect.

What virtual accounts cost

Pricing is usually a percentage per payment received, sometimes with a cap. As of October 2026, published examples include:

  • Paystack lists dedicated virtual accounts at 1% per transaction, capped at ₦300.
  • Monnify lists bank transfer collections at 1.5%, capped at ₦2,000, with no setup or monthly fees, and rates shown before VAT.
  • Banks and other providers price by negotiation, often lower at high volume.

Worked example: a private school

A school with 400 pupils collects termly fees of ₦350,000 per pupil, or ₦140 million a term. With a dedicated account per pupil at 1% capped at ₦300, every payment hits the cap, so each one costs ₦300. If every parent pays in one transfer, the term's collection costs ₦120,000, under 0.1% of the fees. If half the parents pay in three instalments, there are 800 payments and the cost rises to ₦240,000. Compare that with a bursar spending days matching 400 transfers by sender name, many paid from a parent's company account or a relative's phone.

Remember that capped pricing favours large payments. On a ₦5,000 order the same 1% fee is ₦50, a much bigger share of a small sale. Model your own average ticket before you commit.

How different businesses use them

Landlords and estate managers
One account per tenant or unit. Rent and service charges match to the unit, even when a tenant's employer pays.
Schools
One account per pupil. Instalments and sibling payments are recognised without parents typing references.
Distributors and FMCG suppliers
One account per retailer. Field sales staff stop collecting cash and screenshots.
Online sellers
A dynamic account per order at checkout, expiring if unpaid.
Fintechs and wallets
One account per user to fund a wallet from any bank.
Cooperatives and associations
One account per member for dues and contributions.

Whatever the use, the operating rules are the same. Only act on payment confirmations from your provider, never on a customer's screenshot. Verify each webhook's signature. Make your handler safe to run twice, because providers retry. Run a daily comparison against the provider's transaction list. Our article on payment reconciliation sets out a full routine.

Common problems and fixes

  • Wrong amounts. Decide in advance whether to refund, hold as credit or request a top-up when a customer underpays or overpays.
  • Customers paying an old number. Keep dedicated numbers live for as long as customers might use them, and tell customers clearly if one changes.
  • Missed notifications. Treat webhooks as fast but not guaranteed. The daily check against the provider's records is what catches gaps.
  • Name confusion. Check what name the payer sees on name enquiry. It should be recognisably your business, or customers will hesitate.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme Financial is a technology company, not a bank. In Nigeria, Naira deposits are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank, licensed by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit. Pryme virtual accounts are issued over one API; pricing is shown before you commit. Whichever provider you use, expect to supply a BVN or NIN for customer-level accounts under CBN rules, and check which account types it offers, how its notifications are signed and how it retries missed ones.

For the wider picture, including cards, USSD, invoices and withholding tax, return to our main guide to accepting payments in Nigeria.

Questions people ask

Is a virtual account a real bank account in Nigeria?

It is a real NUBAN account number that any bank can pay into, but it usually holds no balance of its own. Money paid into it lands in the business's main account, and the virtual number tells the business who paid.

How much does a virtual account cost in Nigeria?

Most providers charge per payment received. As of October 2026, Paystack lists dedicated virtual accounts at 1% capped at ₦300, and other providers publish or negotiate their own rates. Opening the number itself is often free.

Why does my provider ask for my customer's BVN?

CBN rules since March 2024 stop accounts and wallets without a BVN or NIN from transacting. Accounts issued in a customer's name therefore need one of the two.

What is the difference between a dedicated and dynamic virtual account?

A dedicated account belongs to one customer and can be paid into again and again. A dynamic account is created for a single order and usually expires after payment or after a set time.

Can a customer reverse a payment into a virtual account?

Not in the way a card payment can be charged back. A completed transfer is final, though banks can freeze or recall funds linked to fraud.
