Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Small business

Cash flow for small businesses in Nigeria: a practical guide

Why profitable Nigerian businesses still run out of money, how to build a 13-week cash flow forecast, and ten ways to keep more cash in hand.

The short answer

Cash flow is the timing of money in and out of your business, and it is why profitable businesses still run short. Manage it by keeping a simple 13-week forecast of expected receipts and payments, getting paid faster, paying suppliers on agreed terms rather than early, holding a cash buffer and planning ahead for large known costs such as rent, stock-ups and tax.

Profit is not cash

A business can be profitable on paper and still be unable to pay salaries on Friday. Common reasons in Nigeria:

  • Customers, especially corporate and government buyers, pay weeks or months after delivery.
  • Stock must be bought in bulk before festive seasons or price rises.
  • Annual rent is paid upfront.
  • Equipment breaks and a generator or vehicle needs urgent repair.
  • Withholding tax deducted by clients reduces cash received now; see withholding tax on invoices.

Build a 13-week cash flow forecast

Thirteen weeks is about a quarter: long enough to see trouble coming, short enough to estimate with care. Use a sheet with one column per week.

  1. Opening cash: what is in the business account and cash box today.
  2. Expected receipts: sales you expect to be paid for that week, using realistic dates, not invoice due dates.
  3. Expected payments: suppliers, wages, rent, data, diesel, loan repayments, tax and any owner's pay.
  4. Closing cash = opening cash + receipts − payments. That becomes next week's opening cash.
  5. Update it every week with actual figures and roll it forward one week.

Worked example: spotting a gap early

Week (example)OpeningInOutClosing
1₦850,000₦1,200,000₦1,100,000₦950,000
2₦950,000₦900,000₦1,050,000₦800,000
3₦800,000₦700,000₦2,400,000 (annual rent)−₦900,000
4−₦900,000₦2,600,000 (corporate invoice)₦1,000,000₦700,000

Example only. The forecast shows a ₦900,000 gap in week 3 because rent falls due before the corporate client pays. Seeing it four weeks ahead, the owner asks the landlord to accept payment in week 4, offers the client a small early-payment incentive, and delays a non-urgent equipment purchase.

Ten ways to improve cash flow

  1. Ask for deposits on custom orders and large jobs.
  2. Invoice the same day you deliver, with clear payment details and a due date.
  3. Make paying easy: transfer details on every invoice, a payment link or checkout.
  4. Follow up overdue invoices on a fixed schedule. See getting customers to pay on time.
  5. Agree payment terms with suppliers and pay on the due date, not before, unless there is a discount.
  6. Buy stock in line with how fast it sells; slow stock is cash sitting on a shelf.
  7. Save for big annual costs (rent, licences, insurance) monthly in a separate place.
  8. Keep a buffer, for example one month of fixed costs, before taking extra owner's pay.
  9. Sell or rent out equipment you no longer use.
  10. Review prices when costs rise; see how to price products and services.

Example: stock that sits too long

Example only. A provisions shop buys ₦3 million of goods ahead of December to beat expected price rises. By mid-January ₦1.2 million is still on the shelves. The shop made a saving on cost, but ₦1.2 million of cash was tied up for six weeks while rent and wages were due. Next year the owner buys in two smaller batches, using sales from the first to fund the second.

Weekly cash review in ten minutes

  1. Update actual cash in and out for the week just ended.
  2. Move any late customer payments to a realistic new week.
  3. Add new commitments: orders, repairs, staff changes.
  4. Look at the lowest closing balance in the next 13 weeks.
  5. If it is below your buffer, decide now what you will do about it.

When you are close to a tax threshold

Small companies with annual gross turnover of ₦100 million or less (and fixed assets not exceeding ₦250 million, excluding professional services) pay 0% company income tax and no development levy, and small businesses at that level are not required to charge VAT. If your forecast shows you will cross ₦100 million, plan for the tax and VAT that follow, including setting cash aside. See small company tax.

Short-term funding: be careful

Borrowing can bridge a timing gap but should not cover a business that is losing money. Compare the full cost, including fees, before you sign; see overdraft vs loan app. Check any digital lender is registered; see how to check a loan app.

Talk to suppliers and landlords early

If your forecast shows a gap, the people you owe are usually more flexible when asked weeks ahead than on the due date. Explain the timing, propose a specific date, and keep your word. A record of keeping promises makes the next request easier. Paying on agreed terms also builds the trading history that suppliers use when deciding whether to offer you credit, which itself improves cash flow.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account's Finance agent can prepare a rolling cash forecast from your account activity and upcoming bills for you to review, and the Chief of Staff agent can flag weeks where payments outrun receipts. They prepare; a person approves above a set ceiling, and actions are recorded.

Questions people ask

Why is my business profitable but always short of cash?

Usually because customers pay later than you pay suppliers, stock ties up money, or large costs like rent come at once. A weekly forecast shows where the gap is.

What is a cash flow forecast?

A week-by-week plan of expected money in and out, showing the closing balance each week so you can spot shortfalls in advance.

How much cash buffer should a small business keep?

Many owners aim for at least one month of fixed costs. Businesses with uneven income may need more.

Should I take a loan to fix cash flow?

Only for a real timing gap with a clear repayment source. If gaps recur every month, fix pricing or costs first.
