Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Packaging and labelling rules for small snack producers

What NAFDAC's pre-packaged food labelling regulations require on a snack pack: name, ingredients, allergens, batch number, dates and registration number.

The short answer

Under NAFDAC's Pre-Packaged Food, Water and Ice (Labelling) Regulations 2019, a snack pack must show the food's name, an ingredients list in descending order of weight, any allergens, net content in metric units, the producer's name and address, a batch number, the date of manufacture, a best-before or expiry date, the NAFDAC registration number and nutrition information, all in English. Breaking the rules can attract a fine of up to ₦50,000 for an individual.

Which rules apply to your snack

Chin chin, plantain chips, kuli kuli, popcorn, peanuts and cookies sold in sealed packs are "pre-packaged food" in NAFDAC's terms. The rules that govern what the pack says are in the Pre-Packaged Food, Water and Ice (Labelling) Regulations 2019. They make it an offence to make, distribute, advertise or sell pre-packaged food that is not labelled as the regulations require. The copy we read is dated 2019, but one clause refers to the regulations as 2018, so check NAFDAC for the current version before you print a large run of labels.

The labelling rules sit alongside product registration. A registered product gets a NAFDAC number, and that number must appear on the label. Our guide to NAFDAC registration for a small food business explains that process and its costs.

What must be on the label

ItemWhat the regulations sayRegulation
Name of the foodThe true name of the food on the principal display panel, in bold. A characterising flavour (for example "pepper") must be part of the name.3, 10(3)
IngredientsHeaded "Ingredients", listed in descending order of weight at manufacture; added water declared.6
AllergensAlways declared: cereals with gluten (wheat, rye, barley, oats, spelt), crustaceans, eggs, fish, peanuts, soybeans, milk, tree nuts, and sulphites at 10 mg/kg or more.6(7)
Net contentMetric units, by weight for solids, on the principal display panel.8, 10(4)
ProducerName and address of the manufacturer, packer or distributor; "Packed for" wording if someone else makes it for you.9
Country of originDeclared on the label.9(5)
Batch numberRequired on all pre-packaged products.13
DatesDay, month and year of manufacture, plus a best-before or use-by/expiry date introduced with those words.11
StorageStorage conditions where the date depends on them.12
Registration numberNAFDAC's registration number.14
NutritionEnergy (kcal), protein, carbohydrate with sugars, fat and sodium, per 100g or per serving.19
LanguageEnglish is mandatory; other languages may be added.15

Batch numbers and dates in practice

The regulations require a batch number but do not prescribe a format, so choose one you can trace. A common approach is the production date plus a run number, for example "B-150926-02" for the second batch fried on 15 September 2026. Keep a simple batch book: date, flour and oil used (with the supplier's own batch numbers), quantity packed and where each carton went. If a customer complains, you can find every pack from the same fry.

For dates, the regulations allow the year in two or four digits and the month in letters or numbers. If you print dates in numbers only, you must show the order, such as DD/MM/YYYY, so a buyer does not read 05/09 as May instead of 5 September. Where an outer wrapper is thrown away, the date must be on the pack the customer keeps. Bakers' wares eaten within 24 hours are exempt from date marking, but packaged snacks that sit on shelves are not.

Setting a best-before date

The regulations tell you to show a date, not how to work it out. A best-before date should rest on evidence: how long your chips stay crisp and your chin chin stays free of rancid taste in the packaging you use. Keep samples from each batch at room temperature and check them weekly; a food laboratory can test shelf life more formally. Choose a date shorter than the point where quality drops.

What you must not put on the pack

  • Medicinal claims, such as "cures ulcer" or "boosts immunity" (regulation 5(1)(c)).
  • Advertising claims or professional endorsements not authorised by NAFDAC (2(1)(c)).
  • Pictures or words that suggest a different product or ingredient that is not there (5(1)(b)).
  • Labels that peel off in normal handling, or text in a colour that does not contrast with the background (5(1)(d), 10(1)).
  • Altered, covered or forged expiry dates; selling expired stock is itself an offence (2(1)(b)).

Regulation 23 sets penalties of up to one year in prison, a fine of up to ₦50,000, or both, for individuals, and a fine of up to ₦100,000 for companies. This is information, not legal advice; NAFDAC's food directorate can confirm how the rules apply to your product.

Steps before you print labels

  1. Write out your recipe by weight so the ingredients list is in the right order.
  2. Mark every allergen in the recipe.
  3. Get a nutrition analysis from a food laboratory; published accounts of NAFDAC food registration list a certificate of analysis among the uploads.
  4. Decide your batch number format and date order, and leave a clear space on the pack for them.
  5. Apply for registration through NAFDAC's NAPAMS portal and add the number when you receive it.
  6. Print a short test run and check that the label survives handling and that every word is legible.

For product ideas that use these rules, see chin chin production and plantain chips startup costs.

Where Pryme fits

Shops that stock your snacks will want invoices and receipts that match each delivery. A Pryme Business Account includes invoicing, and through our partnership with VerifyDoc.ai you can issue a verifiable receipt a buyer can check has not been altered.

Questions people ask

What should be on a NAFDAC food label?

The name of the food, ingredients in descending order, allergens, net content, producer name and address, country of origin, batch number, date of manufacture, best-before or expiry date, storage conditions where relevant, NAFDAC number and nutrition information, in English.

Is batch number compulsory on food packaging in Nigeria?

Yes. Regulation 13 of NAFDAC's pre-packaged food labelling regulations requires a batch number on all pre-packaged products. The format is yours to choose, so pick one you can trace.

Can I sell snacks without a NAFDAC number?

The labelling regulations require the registration number on pre-packaged food, and selling food not labelled as required is an offence. Some small sellers trade unregistered locally, but supermarkets and distributors generally ask for the number.

What is the penalty for wrong food labelling in Nigeria?

Under regulation 23, an individual can face up to one year in prison, a fine of up to ₦50,000, or both; a company faces a fine of up to ₦100,000. Check the current regulations with NAFDAC.
