Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

Shop rent loan for traders in Nigeria: options and cautions

Shop rent is a yearly bill. Microfinance banks and cooperatives fit it better than daily-repayment loans; here is why, with a worked comparison.

The short answer

Traders in Nigeria usually borrow shop rent from microfinance banks, trade or market cooperatives, development lenders such as the Bank of Agriculture for agric traders, and some loan apps. The best fit is a loan repaid monthly over the rent year, because short daily-repayment loans for a yearly bill tend to be rolled over and cost far more. Ask for the total naira cost of the whole year before you choose.

Why shop rent is a hard bill

Market and plaza shops are often let yearly, paid in advance, while a trader's income arrives daily or weekly. That mismatch is the whole problem. A loan should close the gap without draining the working capital you need for stock. If repayments take so much of daily sales that you cannot restock, sales fall and the loan becomes harder to repay.

Where traders can borrow

SourceHow it suits shop rentWhat it asks
Microfinance banksMonthly or weekly instalments over several monthsStatements, ID, BVN, guarantors, sometimes a business visit
Market or trade cooperativesLoans against savings, repaid over the yearMembership period, savings, member guarantors
Bank of Agriculture (agric traders)Micro loans for agricultural businessThree months' relationship, 20% lien deposit, two guarantors
Commercial banksBusiness loans for established tradersCAC papers, statements, sometimes collateral
Loan apps and daily-repayment lendersFast but shortBVN, account, ID; daily or weekly debits

Microfinance banks

MFBs are licensed by the CBN and many specialise in traders. Expect a loan officer to visit the shop, ask about daily sales and request guarantors from your market. Renmoney, a CBN-licensed MFB, advertises business loans alongside personal loans on its site. Ask for a tenure that matches the rent year and for weekly or monthly repayments rather than daily.

Cooperatives

Market associations and trade cooperatives often lend members a multiple of what they have saved, repaid over months. Costs and rules are set by the bye-laws. If you are not a member, joining now and saving for six months may give you a cheaper loan for next year's rent. See how cooperative loans work and daily contribution loans for traders.

Why daily-repayment loans are costly for a yearly expense

A daily-repayment loan for 30 to 60 days can work for stock that sells within that time. Rent does not sell; it is a cost spread across the year. If the loan ends after 60 days, you either find the full balance from sales or borrow again. Each new loan brings new interest and fees.

Example only. Shop rent of ₦600,000.

Option A: a 60-day loan at an illustrative 0.5% a day flat
Interest ₦180,000; daily repayment ₦13,000
Option A rolled over six times across the year without reducing the balance
Interest about ₦1,080,000
Option B: a 12-month MFB loan at an illustrative 3.5% a month on a reducing balance
Monthly instalment about ₦62,090; interest about ₦145,084

Option B is cheaper for the year and asks about ₦2,070 a day if you set aside a thirtieth of the instalment daily, against ₦13,000 a day under Option A. The rates here are illustrations; ask each lender for its own rate and how it is charged.

Preparing your case as a trader

A loan officer deciding on shop rent wants to see that your shop earns enough to cover the instalment and still restock. Prepare:

  • six months of statements from the account your sales go into, with takings paid in regularly;
  • a simple record of daily or weekly sales and what you spend on stock;
  • your current shop receipt or tenancy agreement, and the landlord's demand for the new year;
  • your association or cooperative membership card, if you have one;
  • names of two traders who know your business and could stand as guarantors.

Ask the lender to pay the landlord directly if it offers that, and collect the receipt. If the lender pays you, transfer the rent to the landlord the same day so the money is not used for stock in the meantime. Then open a separate savings pot for next year: dividing the year's rent by 52 tells you the weekly amount to set aside, which for ₦600,000 is about ₦11,538.

Cautions

  • Ask whether repayments are taken by direct debit and how often; daily debits can empty the account you use for stock.
  • Check app lenders on the FCCPC register of approved digital lenders; see how to check a loan app.
  • Be careful when standing guarantor for another trader; you may have to repay if they default.
  • Get the landlord's receipt for the rent, especially if the lender pays the landlord.
  • Do not take a second loan to repay the first.

Steps

  1. Ask the landlord whether rent can be paid in two or four parts this year.
  2. Work out how much you can set aside each week from sales after restocking.
  3. Approach an MFB or your market cooperative with six months of statements.
  4. Ask for a tenure that ends no later than the rent year and weekly or monthly repayments.
  5. From next month, save a weekly amount towards next year's rent.

For other trader finance, see loans for market traders.

Where Pryme fits

A trader whose shop is in a Spaces sector, such as grocery or retail, can open a Pryme Business Account and join Spaces. Pryme does not lend for shop rent.

Questions people ask

Where can traders get loan to pay shop rent?

Microfinance banks, market or trade cooperatives, the Bank of Agriculture for agric traders, and commercial banks for established businesses. Choose a loan repaid over the rent year.

Is daily repayment loan good for shop rent?

Usually not. A short daily-repayment loan for a yearly bill is often rolled over, and each new loan adds interest and fees. A 12-month loan with weekly or monthly repayments usually costs less.

Can a market cooperative give me loan for shop rent?

Many do, usually as a multiple of your savings once you have been a member for a set period, with member guarantors. Check the bye-laws for rates and rules.

Do microfinance banks give loans to traders without collateral?

Many lend to traders on statements, a business visit and guarantors rather than property. Terms vary by bank.
