Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Italy

Shipping a barrel or boxes of goods from Italy to Nigeria

What happens when a barrel or boxes of personal goods from Italy reach Nigeria: documents, how customs treats used and new items, and costs to plan for.

The short answer

A barrel or boxes of personal goods sent from Italy are cleared by the Nigeria Customs Service at the port or airport, usually through a clearing agent, and the consignee needs a valid Nigerian e-passport (or residence permit), a signed packing list and, for sea cargo, a TIN. No official page we could find sets a personal-effects duty allowance, so expect customs to assess duty on new or commercial-looking goods and plan for clearing, port and delivery charges on top of the freight.

How a barrel actually gets home

Many Nigerians in Italy fill a drum or a stack of boxes with clothes, shoes, kitchenware, toiletries and gifts and hand it to a consolidator who ships by sea or air. The freight price quoted in Italy usually covers only part of the journey. At the Nigerian end, the goods must be cleared through customs, port or terminal charges paid, and the barrel delivered or collected. Ask your shipper in Italy, in writing, which of these the price includes.

StageWho handles itTypical cost line
Packing and pick-up in ItalyYou or the shipperPacking materials, collection fee
Freight to Lagos (sea or air)Shipper or consolidatorPer barrel, box or kilo
Customs clearanceClearing agent on behalf of the consigneeAgent's fee plus any duty and taxes assessed
Port or terminal chargesTerminal operatorStorage charges rise if goods sit uncollected
Delivery in NigeriaShipper's partner or your own transportPer destination

Documents the consignee needs

The International Association of Movers' Nigeria guide (modified September 2026) lists for sea shipments of household goods: the consignee's original international passport (both, for dual nationals), original residence permit for non-Nigerians, a letter of introduction, a signed packing list, a Tax Identification Number (TIN) and consignment instructions. For air shipments: passport, residence permit for non-Nigerians, a correctly consigned air waybill, a signed packing list and a letter of introduction. Returning Nigerians need an original Nigerian e-passport; the guide states that non-electronic passports are not accepted.

If you are sending to a relative, the consignee is usually that relative, so their ID and TIN matter, not yours. Check with the shipper whose name goes on the bill of lading or air waybill before you ship.

Duty: what is known and what is not

We could not find an official Nigeria Customs Service page setting a duty-free allowance for personal effects sent as cargo, and the movers' guide only describes duty-free treatment for diplomatic shipments. That means customs assesses each consignment. In practice:

  • Expect used clothing and household items in modest quantities to look like personal goods, and new goods in quantity to draw questions.
  • Many identical new items (twenty pairs of the same shoe, cartons of one product) look commercial and are likely to be assessed as an import.
  • Commercial imports follow a different process altogether: Sterling Bank's Form M guidance says a Form M, the declaration of intention to import, is mandatory for physical goods imported for trade, whatever the value, with permits from bodies such as NAFDAC or SON depending on the goods.
  • Food, medicines and cosmetics are regulated by NAFDAC; its food import guideline says unregistered food products may not be imported for sale.

Ask the clearing agent for a written estimate of duty and charges before the goods arrive, and keep receipts for anything you bought new in Italy. For food items specifically, see egusi, stockfish and Italian customs; for medicines, sending medicines from Italy.

A packing list that helps clearance

  1. Number every barrel or box.
  2. List contents by box: item, quantity, used or new, approximate value in euros.
  3. Sign and date the list; give one copy to the shipper and send one to the consignee.
  4. Keep receipts for new electronics or appliances.

Worked example (illustrative figures only)

You ship two barrels from Naples. Freight is quoted at €180 per barrel, so €360. The shipper says delivery to Lagos is included, clearing is not. The consignee's clearing agent quotes ₦120,000 for both barrels and warns of terminal storage at ₦5,000 per barrel per day after the free period. Collecting four days late adds 4 × 2 × ₦5,000 = ₦40,000. Budget the freight in euros and the clearing, storage and contingency in naira.

What to check first

  • What the shipper's price includes and excludes.
  • The consignee's name, ID and TIN on the shipping documents.
  • Whether anything in the barrel is food, medicine, cosmetics or electronics in quantity.
  • The clearing agent's written estimate.
  • How long goods can sit at the terminal before storage charges start.

Choosing a shipper in Italy

Ask for a written quote that names the port or airport of arrival, the estimated transit time, what happens at the Nigerian end and who to call if the goods are delayed. Ask how long the shipper has run the route, and talk to people who used them recently. Insurance for loss or damage is often optional; ask what it covers and what it costs before you decide.

Where Pryme fits

The Nigerian side of a shipment is paid in naira: the clearing agent, terminal charges and delivery. From a Pryme account opened in Italy you can convert euros with Swap and send naira to the agent's account; the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank. For larger moves, see shipping a container from Italy to Lagos.

Questions people ask

Do I pay customs duty on a barrel sent to Nigeria?

Customs assesses each consignment. No official page we found sets a personal-effects allowance; new or commercial-looking goods are likely to attract duty.

What documents are needed to clear a barrel in Lagos?

For sea cargo, the IAM guide lists the consignee's passport, a signed packing list, a letter of introduction, a TIN and consignment instructions; returning Nigerians need an e-passport.

Can I send food in a barrel to Nigeria?

Small amounts for personal use are common, but food is regulated by NAFDAC, and its guideline bars importing unregistered food for sale.

Why is my barrel stuck at the port?

Usually missing documents, an unpaid assessment, or the consignee not yet appointing an agent. Storage charges rise while it waits.
