Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Arab Emirates

Shipping household goods from the UAE when you move home

Moving back to Nigeria from the UAE: when used household goods come in duty-free, the documents Customs asks for, and the items that cause trouble.

The short answer

Used personal and household effects of a returning Nigerian can come in without duty, and a Federal High Court ruling in 2020 held that personal and household effects not for sale are not dutiable. A 2023 industry guide says returnees should have lived abroad for 9 uninterrupted months, ship within about 2 months of return and show items used for 6 months or more, with a passport, signed packing list and TIN.

The rule in one paragraph

Nigeria lets returning residents bring their used belongings home without paying import duty, provided the goods are personal and household effects and not stock for sale. The FIDI Africa import customs guide for Nigeria (a moving-industry guide, last updated 10 October 2023) gives the working conditions movers use: at least 9 months of uninterrupted residence abroad, shipment arriving within roughly 2 months of your return, and items that have been in your use for 6 months or more. It is a secondary source, so ask your mover and Nigerian clearing agent to confirm the current practice before you pack.

There is case law on the principle. In Ogunwumiju v Nigerian Customs Service Board (FHC/ABJ/CS/1113/2019), reported by TheCable on 14 May 2020, the Federal High Court in Abuja held that Customs acted unlawfully in charging duty on a laptop bag in a passenger's luggage, ruling that goods in passenger baggage not for sale, barter or exchange, and personal and household effects, are not dutiable. The court ordered a refund and damages.

Documents to prepare

The FIDI guide lists, for a household goods shipment by sea:

  • Your original Nigerian passport (showing you lived abroad).
  • A detailed packing list, signed by you.
  • Your Tax Identification Number (TIN).
  • A letter of introduction for the shipment.

Practical extras: your UAE residence cancellation or exit papers, which help show the length of your stay; receipts for higher-value electronics; and a list of serial numbers. Name every box consistently with the packing list.

What causes trouble

ItemWhySource
New furnitureListed as prohibited in household shipmentsFIDI guide (2023)

Multiples of the same new itemLooks like trade stock, which is dutiableCourt ruling turns on goods not being for sale
CarsSeparate rules, duty and age limitsSee the used car article

Prohibited items are prohibited whether they are new or used and whether or not you pay duty. The ThisDay report of 19 April 2026 described a revised list dated 1 April 2026 that keeps retail soaps and detergents, refined vegetable oils in retail packs, and listed medicines, including paracetamol. Leave these out of your boxes. If you plan to ship a car, read importing a used car from Dubai separately.

Sea, air or suitcases

Most families move by sea container or groupage, which is where the documents above apply. Small amounts can travel as checked baggage or courier. Nigeria Customs approved a $300 de minimis threshold from 8 September 2025, under which low-value imports, e-commerce consignments and passenger baggage below that value are exempt from duties and related taxes, limited to four importations a year (FMINO statement, 7 September 2025). It excludes prohibited and restricted goods.

Steps

  1. Sort belongings into personal effects, items to sell or give away in the UAE, and anything on the prohibition list.
  2. Get written quotes from movers that name the Nigerian clearing agent and state who handles duty-relief paperwork.
  3. Prepare the signed packing list; describe goods as used where they are.
  4. Time the shipment so it arrives within the window your agent confirms.
  5. Keep originals of your passport, TIN and residence papers available until the goods are released.

Choosing a mover in the UAE

The mover's quote is where most household moves go wrong, because the cheapest price often stops at the Lagos quay. Ask each mover the same questions in writing:

  • Is the quote door to door, or does it end at the port of discharge?
  • Who is the Nigerian agent that will clear the goods, and is that agent licensed?
  • Which charges in Nigeria are included (terminal handling, shipping line charges, agent fee, delivery) and which are not?
  • How many free days does the line give at the Nigerian port, and what happens after?
  • Who prepares the packing list, and will they describe items as used?
  • What insurance is offered, on what basis (replacement or depreciated value), and what is excluded?

Get the answers on the quote itself, not in a WhatsApp message. If the container waits in Lagos because paperwork is incomplete, port charges build daily; see avoiding demurrage at Lagos ports.

Worked example

Example only. Funke leaves Abu Dhabi after six years. She ships a 20-foot container of used furniture, kitchenware, books and a two-year-old television, and arrives in Lagos five weeks before the container. Because everything is used, listed and hers, her agent processes it as personal effects. She had planned to add six new blenders as gifts for relatives; her agent warns that multiples of new items look like trade goods and could be assessed for duty, so she leaves them out. A used fridge she wanted to bring is on the prohibition list, so she sells it in Abu Dhabi instead.

Where Pryme fits

Moving costs come in dirhams at one end and naira at the other, often weeks apart. A Pryme Personal Account can be opened before you leave and holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local details for each, so you can move savings in stages and convert with Swap when you choose. For moving money home, see how to bring your money home; for the UAE side, moving savings before you leave the UAE. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's activities are carried out through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Do I pay duty on household goods when moving back to Nigeria?

Used personal and household effects not for sale are not dutiable, as a Federal High Court ruled in 2020. Movers' guidance adds conditions on time abroad and how long items were used.

How long must I have lived abroad to ship goods duty-free to Nigeria?

A 2023 FIDI moving-industry guide says 9 months of uninterrupted residence abroad. Confirm current practice with your clearing agent.

Can I ship a used fridge from Dubai to Nigeria?

Used fridges, freezers, air conditioners and compressors are on Nigeria's import prohibition list, so no.

What documents do I need to clear household goods in Lagos?

Original passport, a signed packing list, your TIN and a letter of introduction, per the FIDI guide, plus proof of your residence abroad.
