Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

SONCAP for electronics shipped from Dubai to Nigeria

Electronics shipped from Dubai need a SONCAP Product Certificate for Form M and a SONCAP Certificate for clearance. Fees, validity and who applies.

The short answer

Electronics are not on SON's exemption list, so new electronics shipped from Dubai to Nigeria need SONCAP. The Dubai exporter obtains a Product Certificate (PC) through an accredited inspection firm, which the importer needs to process Form M, and each consignment then gets a SONCAP Certificate (SC) for customs clearance. SON's FAQ lists fees of $500, $1,000 or $2,000 for the three PC types and $350 for each SC.

SONCAP, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria Conformity Assessment Programme, is the reason many Dubai electronics shipments sit at Apapa. It is a pre-shipment scheme: the checks happen in the UAE, before the goods sail, not at the Nigerian port.

Which goods need SONCAP

SON's SONCAP service page says all imports are regulated except a short list. The FAQ gives the exempt categories as:

  • Food.
  • Medicines and medical items (but not medical equipment).
  • Raw-material chemicals for bona fide food and medicine manufacturers.
  • Contraband.
  • Used products other than automobiles.

Televisions, laptops, phones, power banks, air conditioners, inverters, kitchen appliances and cables are none of these, so new units need SONCAP. The FAQ adds that refurbished goods need an Import Permit, at 5% of FOB value with a minimum of ₦550,000. Phones also need NCC type approval; see buying phones in Deira to resell.

The two certificates

Product Certificate (PC)SONCAP Certificate (SC)
Issued toThe exporter (your Dubai supplier)The importer in Nigeria
Used forOpening the Form MCustoms clearance of one consignment
Validity (SON FAQ)PC1: 6 months, single use. PC2 and PC3: 12 monthsOne consignment (one PAAR)
Fee (SON FAQ)PC1 $500, PC2 $1,000, PC3 $2,000$350

SON's FAQ describes the PC types as covering unregistered, registered and licensed products. It says the Product Certificate and the SONCAP Certificate are mandatory for the processing of Form M and for customs clearance of SON-regulated goods. A Non-Conformity Report (NCR), issued where goods fail, is also listed at $350. Fees are from SON's undated FAQ page as checked in October 2026; confirm them with the inspection firm before you budget.

How a Dubai supplier gets the certificates

  1. The exporter chooses an Independent Accredited Firm (IAF). SON's service page says the exporter can choose any IAF.
  2. The IAF reviews documents and test reports, and may inspect, sample and test in the country of supply.
  3. If the product conforms, the IAF issues the Product Certificate to the exporter, who sends it to the Nigerian importer for the Form M.
  4. Before each shipment, the IAF checks the consignment and issues the SONCAP Certificate for that load.

SON's FAQ says a PC or SC is issued within 96 hours, or 24 hours where the file is complete. Many Dubai traders sell goods made elsewhere, so ask early whether the supplier can obtain the factory test reports the IAF needs.

Worked example: which PC is cheaper?

Example only, using the SON FAQ fees. An importer expects three shipments of the same laptops from one Dubai supplier in a year.

OptionCalculationTotal
PC1 each time (single use)3 x $500 + 3 x $350$2,550
One PC2 for the year$1,000 + 3 x $350$2,050

With two shipments the totals match ($1,700 each way). With three or more, a 12-month PC2 is cheaper, if the product qualifies.

Mixed loads and trading companies

Two features of the Dubai market make SONCAP harder than it looks. First, many orders mix goods: phones with chargers, televisions with wall brackets, generators with cables. Each regulated item needs to be covered, so list every line on the proforma invoice and ask the inspection firm which items its certificate covers. Second, many Dubai sellers are traders, not manufacturers. The inspection firm will usually want test reports for the product, and a trader may have to get them from the factory. A trader who says SONCAP is "no problem" but cannot name the inspection firm it uses is a warning sign.

Ask the supplier, in writing, before you pay a deposit: which IAF it uses, whether it already holds a Product Certificate for these models and when it expires, and who pays for the SONCAP Certificate for each shipment. Put the answers in the purchase agreement.

What goes wrong without SONCAP

SON's FAQ sets a default charge for regulated goods arriving without SONCAP of 20% of CIF value or ₦2 million, whichever is higher. Goods may also be held. On a $15,000 CIF shipment, 20% is $3,000; whether that or ₦2 million is higher depends on the exchange rate on the day, so check both.

What to check first

  • Whether every item in the order is SON-regulated. Mixed loads often contain both.
  • That the supplier has, or can get, a Product Certificate before you open the Form M; see Form M for goods bought in Dubai.
  • That an SC will be issued for each consignment before loading.
  • Whether the goods are refurbished, which needs an Import Permit rather than ordinary SONCAP.

Where Pryme fits

SONCAP fees are usually paid in dollars to the inspection firm, while your sales are in naira. A Pryme Business Account holds both and converts with Swap only when you approve the rate. See business Swap and shipping from Jebel Ali.

Questions people ask

Do electronics from Dubai need SONCAP?

Yes, new electronics are not on SON's exemption list, so they need a Product Certificate and a SONCAP Certificate.

How much is SONCAP certificate?

SON's FAQ lists PC1 $500, PC2 $1,000, PC3 $2,000, and $350 for each SONCAP Certificate. Confirm current fees with the inspection firm.

Who applies for SONCAP, the buyer or the seller?

The exporter applies for the Product Certificate through an accredited firm; the SONCAP Certificate is issued for the importer's consignment.

What happens if I import without SONCAP?

SON's FAQ sets a default charge of 20% of CIF value or ₦2 million, whichever is higher, and goods may be held.
