Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Advance payment or credit terms with Nigerian buyers?

Cash in advance, letters of credit, collections or open account: how each works when you sell to a Nigerian buyer, and the 30% FOB rule.

The short answer

Cash in advance is the safest term for a seller and open account credit the riskiest, with letters of credit and documentary collections in between. When your Nigerian buyer pays through a Nigerian bank, the CBN FX Manual 2026 caps advance payment for physical imports at 30% of the FOB value (up from 15%, as summarised by Pavestones Legal in June 2026), so a full prepayment through the official window is often not possible.

The four ways to get paid, from safest to riskiest

The US International Trade Administration's trade finance guide sets out the standard ladder of payment terms. It is written for exporters anywhere and fits a diaspora business selling goods into Nigeria well:

TermHow it worksRisk to you as seller
Cash in advanceBuyer pays before you ship, usually by wire or card.Lowest. The buyer carries the risk, so you may lose sales.
Letter of credit (LC)A bank commits to pay when you present documents that comply with the credit.Low, if you can produce compliant documents on time.
Documentary collectionBanks pass shipping documents to the buyer against payment (at sight) or against acceptance of a bill (on a date).Medium. Banks do not verify or guarantee payment, and recourse is limited.
Open accountYou ship and invoice, buyer pays in 30, 60 or 90 days.Highest. You are relying on the buyer alone.

The ITA notes that documentary collections cost less than letters of credit, which is why many smaller deals use them, and that export credit insurance can make open account terms safer.

Why Nigerian rules shape the deposit you can ask for

A Nigerian importer who buys foreign currency through a Nigerian bank to pay you does so against a registered Form M. Sterling Bank's Form M FAQ describes the Form M as the declaration of intention to import physical goods, required whatever the value and whether or not payment is involved, and says the proforma invoice behind it is valid for a maximum of 90 days. The same FAQ distinguishes Form M marked "Valid for FX" from "Not Valid for FX", the second used when the importer pays from its own domiciliary funds.

The CBN Foreign Exchange Manual 2026 (effective 1 June 2026) raised the limit on advance payment for physical imports from 15% to 30% of FOB, according to Pavestones Legal's summary. In practice, a buyer paying through the official window can usually send you up to that share before shipment, with the balance paid against shipping documents. If a buyer offers to pay 100% upfront, ask how: through a bank against Form M, or from funds outside that channel. The source of your money matters to your own bank as well.

A worked example

Example only. You sell salon equipment worth $20,000 FOB to a Lagos distributor.

  • Deposit at 30% of FOB: $6,000, paid by the buyer's bank after Form M is registered.
  • Balance: $14,000, payable against documents through a documentary collection at sight, so the buyer cannot take the bill of lading until it pays.
  • Your exposure once the goods sail: $14,000 plus the cost of shipping them back or reselling if the buyer refuses the documents.

Compare open account at 60 days on the same order: your exposure is the full $20,000 for the sailing time plus 60 days. Under an LC confirmed by a bank you trust, the exposure moves to whether your documents comply.

Choosing terms for the buyer in front of you

New buyer, first order

Ask for the maximum permitted deposit and the balance against documents, or an LC. Check the company's CAC record before you quote (see checking a Nigerian company on the CAC register).

Repeat buyer with a payment record

A documentary collection, or open account for part of the order, becomes reasonable. Keep credit limits per buyer and stop shipping when a payment is late.

Large or long-dated orders

Use an LC (see a letter of credit from a Nigerian buyer) or credit insurance. For UK sellers, UK Export Finance's export insurance policy can cover up to 95% of a loss from buyer insolvency or non-payment and some political events, but it excludes unresolved disputes and goods in transit, and requires at least 20% UK content.

What to check first

  1. Has the buyer registered a Form M, and is it marked valid for FX? Ask for the Form M number.
  2. Does your proforma match the Form M exactly, and is it still inside its validity? See proforma invoices for Nigerian importers.
  3. Which documents release the goods, and who holds them until you are paid?
  4. What happens if the buyer refuses the documents: return freight, storage, resale?
  5. Is the payment coming from the buyer's own business account?

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account gives you USD, GBP, EUR and NGN with local account details, so a buyer can pay the deposit and the balance into the currency you invoiced. Invoicing keeps each deposit and balance tied to its invoice. For how Nigerian buyers think about deposits and credit, see supplier payment terms in Nigeria.

Questions people ask

Can a Nigerian buyer pay 100% in advance for imports?

Through the official FX window, the CBN FX Manual 2026 limits advance payment for physical imports to 30% of FOB, as summarised by Pavestones Legal in June 2026. Ask your buyer's bank how it applies the rule to your order.

Is a documentary collection safe when selling to Nigeria?

It is safer than open account because the buyer must pay or accept a bill before getting the documents. Banks do not guarantee payment, so you can still be left with unsold goods at the port.

What is Form M "Not Valid for FX"?

Sterling Bank's FAQ describes it as a Form M used when the importer pays from its own domiciliary funds rather than buying FX through the bank.

Should I give 60 days credit to a Nigerian distributor?

Only once you know the buyer's payment record, and ideally with a credit limit or export credit insurance. Open account is the highest-risk term for a seller.
