Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Ghana

How does road freight from Lagos to Accra clear the borders?

A truck from Lagos to Accra clears Nigerian export at Seme, crosses Benin and Togo in transit, and clears Ghana import at Aflao in ICUMS.

The short answer

A Lagos-to-Accra truck goes through three customs events: export clearance on the Nigerian side at Seme (Form NXP, Nigeria Customs declaration, licensed agent), transit through Benin and Togo, and import clearance at Aflao, where a Ghanaian agent lodges the declaration in ICUMS with the waybill, invoice, packing list, Import Declaration Form and permits. Most delays come from paperwork that does not match the load.

The coastal road from Lagos to Accra is one of West Africa's busiest trade routes, and it crosses two countries in between. For a trader it is a chain of hand-offs: if one document is wrong, the truck waits. This guide explains each stage, what is written down by the official sources we read, and what you should get confirmed by your haulier and agents.

Stage 1: Nigerian export at Seme

The Nigeria Trade Information Portal's export procedure lists Seme among Nigeria's export points, alongside the seaports. Before the truck leaves, the Nigerian exporter (your supplier, or you if you are exporting) needs:

  • Registration basics: CAC registration, a Tax ID from the NRS, an export proceeds domiciliary account with an authorised dealer bank, and an NEPC exporter's certificate.
  • Form NXP for a commercial export (NCX for non-commercial), processed through the bank.
  • Any permits the goods need, such as NAFDAC or quarantine certificates, applied for through the Nigeria Single Window.
  • A customs declaration on the Nigeria Customs Service's B'Odogwu system, lodged by a licensed customs agent; the portal says a licensed agent is required.

Nigerian customs uses green, yellow and red lanes, so some loads are examined. For Form NXP, see Form NXP for exports to Ghana. If the goods qualify for ECOWAS preference, the ETLS certificate should be in the truck's file from here; see using ETLS.

Stage 2: transit through Benin and Togo

Between Seme and Aflao the goods are in transit: they are not being imported into Benin or Togo, but those countries' customs will want to see that the load moves through under control. None of the official pages we opened sets out the transit documents or guarantees for this corridor, so ask your haulier, before booking:

  • Which transit document and guarantee they use for Benin and Togo, and who pays for it.
  • How many hours or days they expect at each frontier, including the Benin-Togo crossing.
  • Whether the truck is sealed at Seme and checked at each border.
  • Who handles any unofficial demands, and that you will not pay anything without a receipt.

GRA's own transit unit covers goods passing through Ghana to Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, and lists Aflao among its dedicated transit stations, with the State Insurance Company as national guarantor for transit bonds. That is for goods going beyond Ghana; goods for sale in Ghana are imported at Aflao.

Stage 3: Ghana import at Aflao

GRA's import procedure applies at the border as at the ports. A clearing agent lodges the declaration in ICUMS with:

  • The waybill
  • An attested invoice
  • Packing list
  • Import Declaration Form from the Ministry of Trade
  • Your TIN or Ghana Card PIN
  • Regulator permits, such as an FDA eMDA permit for food

ICUMS classifies and values the goods, a tax bill is paid at a participating bank, and the risk lane decides whether the truck is examined (red), scanned (yellow) or released (green). See how Ghana duty is worked out and whether you need a licensed agent at Aflao.

Timing the paperwork

The FDA processes an eMDA food permit in up to one working day after the fee is paid, but only for registered products; registration itself takes longer. Start registrations weeks ahead, apply for the permit before loading, and send copies of every document to your Ghanaian agent while the truck is still in Lagos, so the ICUMS declaration can be prepared before arrival.

Who does what: agree it in the contract

Incoterms decide who handles which clearance. ICC Academy notes that under EXW the buyer handles "all export formalities", and that a buyer who cannot do Nigerian export clearance is "better advised to choose" FCA, where the seller clears export. For a Ghana buyer, FCA Lagos or delivery terms to Aflao are usually more practical than EXW.

TaskUsually done by
Form NXP and Nigerian export declarationNigerian seller and its agent
Haulage and transit through Benin and TogoHaulier, as agreed in the contract
FDA permit and Ghana import declarationGhanaian importer and its licensed agent
Ghana duty and leviesGhanaian importer

Where trucks get held up

From the official pages, the common points of failure are predictable: a declaration that does not match what is in the truck, a missing regulator permit, and documents that arrive after the goods. On the Ghana side, a red-lane result means physical examination, which adds time; a consistent, complete file is the best way to stay out of it.

What to check before the truck leaves

  1. Invoice, packing list and any ETLS certificate describe the same goods in the same quantities.
  2. FDA permit approved for food, before loading.
  3. Best-before dates leave two-thirds of shelf life at Ghana clearance.
  4. Your Ghana agent has copies of everything in advance.
  5. The haulier has confirmed the transit arrangements in writing.

Where Pryme fits

Paying the haulier and supplier from one place makes the paper trail easier to follow. A Pryme Business Account keeps naira and dollar payments separate and records each against its invoice.

Questions people ask

Which border do trucks from Lagos to Accra use?

Nigerian export clearance is at Seme, the truck crosses Benin and Togo in transit, and Ghanaian import clearance is at Aflao.

What documents does Ghana Customs need at Aflao?

The waybill, an attested invoice, the packing list, the Import Declaration Form, your TIN or Ghana Card PIN, and permits for regulated goods, lodged in ICUMS by an agent.

Do I need Form NXP to send goods by road to Ghana?

For a commercial export, yes. Form NXP is processed through the Nigerian exporter's bank before the goods leave.

Should I buy EXW from a Lagos supplier?

Only if you can handle Nigerian export clearance. ICC advises FCA where the buyer cannot do export formalities.
