Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How long does clearing goods at Tema port take?

Clearing a container at Tema: the seven free days, demurrage bands, the stages that cause delay and how importers from Lagos keep within free time.

The short answer

There is no official fixed clearance time at Tema, but the benchmark that matters is seven free days: the Ghana Shippers' Authority says the first seven days are free, after which shipping lines charge demurrage, reported at US$20 to US$30 a day for days 8 to 14 and rising after that. A container whose declaration is lodged before arrival, with permits ready and documents matching, can clear within that window.

Importers moving goods from Lagos to Ghana by sea land at Tema, Ghana's main container port. The question that matters is not an average clearance figure, which no official body we found publishes, but whether you can clear before charges start. This article sets out the clock, the charges and the stages where time is lost.

The clock: seven free days

The Ghana Shippers' Authority (GSA) has said for years that shippers who clear within the first seven days avoid container demurrage and rent. At a seminar reported by the Ghana News Agency in December 2023, the GSA said the law gives the first seven days as free days for clearance, and gave typical demurrage bands, which it said vary by shipping line:

Days after free timeDemurrage per day (GSA, Dec 2023)
Days 8 to 14US$20 to US$30
Days 15 to 21US$30 to US$45
Later daysUS$45 to US$55

These are GSA figures from 2023; your shipping line's tariff is the figure that applies, so ask for it before the vessel arrives. Two different charges run in parallel. Demurrage is charged by the shipping line for keeping its container. Rent and storage are charged by the terminal; a 2020 GPHA notice on a temporary waiver attributes storage and rent to GPHA's terminals and to Meridian Port Services, and demurrage to the shipping lines.

How big the problem is

The GSA's figures show many importers miss the window. It reported demurrage at Tema and Takoradi of US$76 million in 2017 and an estimated US$24 million in 2022, with the share of containerised cargo on demurrage at 60% in 2017 and 45% in 2022. In 2019 it reported terminal rent of GH¢49.9 million for 2018. These are national totals, but they make the point: nearly half of containers were still paying for delay.

Where the time goes

The GSA listed the causes in 2023, and they fall into three groups:

  • Importer side: late documents, no advance information on vessel arrival, lack of funds to pay duty, inaccurate declarations, missing regulatory permits.
  • Service providers: slow shipping line procedures, unprofessional clearing agents, containers hard to locate at the terminal.
  • Systems: ICUMS downtime and teething problems, weak feedback and slow appeals.

Most of the first group is within your control. The second is controlled by choosing your agent with care.

A realistic sequence for a Lagos shipment

  1. Before sailing: agree the HS code, get FDA, GSA or other permits, confirm your Tax Clearance Certificate and IDF are current.
  2. On sailing: get the bill of lading, invoice and packing list from your Lagos supplier and send scans to your agent.
  3. Before arrival: the agent lodges the Bill of Entry on ICUMS; the Logistics Cluster assessment confirms declarations can be lodged before arrival.
  4. Arrival: classification, valuation and approval; pay the tax bill at a participating bank.
  5. Inspection: green, yellow (scan) or red (physical examination) lane.
  6. Exit: pay terminal and GPHA charges, gate checks, release.

The ICUMS stages are explained in how to file an ICUMS declaration.

Worked example (illustrative)

A container is discharged on day 0 and leaves on day 12, so it is five days past the seven free days. At US$25 a day, demurrage is 5 × US$25 = US$125, before terminal rent. Had it left on day 20, it would be 7 days at US$25 (US$175) plus 6 days at, say, US$35 (US$210), or US$385. The cost of delay roughly triples between those two dates.

If you are already past the free days

Charges keep running until the container is returned, not only until it leaves the port, so a box that clears on day 10 but sits at your warehouse for another week can still accrue demurrage if the line counts until empty return. Ask the line how it counts. Then focus on what you can change: pay the tax bill the same day it is generated, ask your agent to book the examination slot at once if the lane is red, and collect as soon as release is given. If the delay was caused by a system outage or an official hold, ask the agent to request a waiver in writing; the 2020 GPHA notice shows that terminals and lines have granted waivers in exceptional periods, but there is no general right to one.

What to check first

  • Your shipping line's free days and daily demurrage tariff, in writing.
  • Whether your container is likely to need physical examination (a new importer or a sensitive product).
  • That your duty money is ready before arrival; the GSA lists lack of funds as a cause of delay.
  • The GRA presentation notes an interest charge 7 days after final discharge; ask your agent how it applies to your file.

Where Pryme fits

Duty money that is ready on time saves days. With a Pryme Business Account you can hold dollars for shipping-line charges and naira for Lagos suppliers, and the Finance agent can set up a reminder for each vessel's arrival date. Consider goods routed via Lagos if your cargo starts outside Africa.

Questions people ask

How many free days do I get at Tema?

The Ghana Shippers' Authority says the first seven days are free. Confirm your shipping line's free time on the bill of lading or its tariff.

Who charges demurrage and who charges rent?

Shipping lines charge demurrage on their containers; terminals charge rent and storage.

Can clearing start before the ship arrives?

Yes. Your agent can lodge the declaration on ICUMS before arrival.

Is demurrage negotiable?

Shipping lines have occasionally waived charges, as in a 2020 COVID-period waiver GPHA announced, but you should plan as if it will be charged in full.
