Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Ghana

How is Ghana customs duty worked out on goods from Nigeria?

Ghana Customs sorts goods into five ECOWAS tariff bands. VAT, health and education levies and other charges are then added in ICUMS. How it works.

The short answer

Ghana Customs classifies the goods by HS code, places them in one of five ECOWAS Common External Tariff bands (0%, 5%, 10%, 20% or 35%), values them, and adds VAT, the National Health Insurance Levy, GETFund, the ECOWAS and African Union levies, a processing fee and other charges in ICUMS. Goods from Nigeria pay the same as goods from elsewhere unless a valid ETLS origin preference is accepted.

If you buy stock in Lagos and sell it in Accra, the landed cost decides your margin, and import charges are the part people guess most often. This guide explains how the Ghana Revenue Authority's Customs Division builds the bill, using GRA's own tariff and import procedure pages, and where the exact numbers come from. It is not a substitute for an ICUMS assessment of your actual goods.

Step 1: classification

Every item is classified under the Harmonised System (HS). The HS code decides the duty band and which permits apply. GRA offers advance rulings on classification; its tariff page carries the application form. If you will import the same product repeatedly, an advance ruling avoids arguing about the code at every shipment.

Step 2: the duty band

GRA's tariff page says that, under the ECOWAS Common External Tariff, Ghana operates five bands:

BandRateCovers (GRA's description)
10%Essential social goods
25%Basic necessities, basic raw materials, capital goods, specific inputs
310%Inputs and intermediate products
420%Finished goods for final consumption
535%Specific goods for economic development

Most retail goods that Nigerian traders bring in, such as packaged food, cosmetics, clothing and household products, are finished consumer goods, which is why 20% is the band you will meet most. Confirm your own code; some foods and inputs sit lower, and some protected goods sit at 35%.

Step 3: the charges on top

GRA states that the band rates "are not in respect of Import Duty only" and lists these impositions:

  • Value Added Tax
  • National Health Insurance Levy
  • Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund)
  • Import Excise Duty (on excisable goods)
  • Examination Fee
  • African Union Levy
  • ECOWAS Levy
  • Processing fee
  • Special Import Levy
  • Import Levy
  • Interest charge (where payment is late)
  • State Warehouse Rent (where goods are held)

GRA's pages do not give the rate or base of each levy. GRA's Customs page quotes the domestic VAT standard rate as 15%, but does not set out how VAT and the other levies stack at import. For the exact figure, use GRA's General Goods Duty Calculator (linked from its Tax Tools menu) or ask your clearing agent for an ICUMS estimate.

Step 4: valuation

Duty is charged on the customs value of the goods. GRA's import page says only that duty depends on "the cost of the goods, type of goods and rates specified". In practice your attested invoice is the starting point, and transport and insurance to the Ghanaian border may be added; ask your agent how ICUMS values your consignment. An invoice that understates the price risks reassessment and, for food, an FDA penalty of 100% of the unpaid verification fee.

A worked example, duty only

Example only. A trader brings in cartons of Nigerian-made biscuits with a customs value of GH₵40,000, classified as finished goods at 20%. Import duty is GH₵40,000 × 20% = GH₵8,000. VAT, the health and education levies, the ECOWAS and AU levies and the processing fee are then added in ICUMS; we have not put numbers on them because GRA's page does not state them. If the same biscuits came in with an accepted ETLS certificate, the duty line is where the preference shows.

How ETLS goods differ

Goods made in Nigeria by a producer approved under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme, travelling with an ETLS certificate of origin, can claim preferential treatment. GRA's pages do not say which of the levies above still apply to ETLS goods, so ask your agent to show the ICUMS calculation both ways. Re-exported foreign goods do not qualify simply because they were loaded in Lagos. See using ETLS for Nigerian goods.

Costs people forget

  • State Warehouse Rent and interest, which GRA lists among the charges, arise when goods sit uncleared or payment is late.
  • FDA verification fees for food and cosmetics, which are separate from customs charges.
  • Your clearing agent's own fees, which are not taxes and should be invoiced separately.
  • Haulage, insurance and border costs between Lagos and Aflao.

Paying and releasing

  1. Your agent lodges the declaration in ICUMS with the waybill, attested invoice, packing list, Import Declaration Form, your TIN or Ghana Card PIN and permits.
  2. ICUMS classifies, values and approves, and produces a tax bill.
  3. The agent pays at a participating bank.
  4. Risk lanes decide what follows: red means physical examination, yellow a scan, green release.
  5. Released goods leave with the waybill after a security check.

For who may lodge the declaration, see licensed clearing agents at Aflao. For food permits, see importing Nigerian foodstuff.

Where Pryme fits

Knowing your landed cost starts with knowing what you paid the supplier. A Pryme Business Account pays Nigerian suppliers in naira, with the rate and fee shown before you approve, so the cedi equivalent on your invoice and your bank record agree.

Questions people ask

What are Ghana's import duty rates?

GRA lists five ECOWAS CET bands: 0%, 5%, 10%, 20% and 35%. Finished consumer goods are usually in the 20% band.

Is there VAT on imports into Ghana?

Yes. GRA lists VAT, the National Health Insurance Levy and GETFund among the charges on imports. Use GRA's duty calculator for the exact amount.

Do goods from Nigeria pay less duty in Ghana?

Only if they qualify for a preference, normally through an ETLS certificate for goods made by an approved Nigerian producer.

How can I estimate Ghana customs duty before shipping?

Use GRA's General Goods Duty Calculator or ask a licensed clearing agent for an ICUMS estimate based on the HS code and invoice.
