Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

Selling property in Nigeria and moving the money to the UK

From sale to sterling. Completing the sale properly, Nigerian and UK capital gains tax, and the CCI and FX Manual routes for moving the proceeds.

The short answer

Complete the sale with a deed of assignment and the buyer's Governor's Consent, have the price paid into your own Nigerian account, and settle Nigerian capital gains tax, now charged on individuals at personal income tax rates. Then move the money through your bank: repatriation is simplest if the original purchase was funded with imported capital and a Certificate of Capital Importation; otherwise ask your bank which FX Manual route applies. UK residents also report the gain in pounds.

Selling the house in Ikeja or the plot in Enugu is often the moment a UK-based owner learns how their purchase was set up years earlier. The sale itself is a Nigerian legal process, the tax falls in both countries, and moving the money depends on documents that may or may not exist. Plan all three before you accept an offer. This is information, not legal or tax advice.

Completing the sale properly

  • Deed of assignment. Your lawyer and the buyer's lawyer agree it; you sign, in person or through a properly granted power of attorney.
  • Governor's Consent. Legal500 notes that the vendor should obtain consent but in practice the purchaser usually does, and that the consent application asks for tax clearance for both parties. Expect the buyer's lawyer to ask for your documents.
  • Payment. Into a Nigerian account in your own name, so the sale price has a clean record.

Nigerian capital gains tax

PwC's summary of the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, effective 1 January 2026, says individuals' capital gains are now taxed in line with personal income tax rates: 0% on the first ₦800,000, then bands of 15%, 18%, 21% and 23%, and 25% above ₦50 million. A principal private residence exemption covers a dwelling and up to one acre, once in a lifetime. PwC's 2026 note says gains are taxable where the asset is located in Nigeria, so a non-resident seller is within scope. How the gain is reported and paid in your case is a question for your Nigerian adviser; keep the tax receipt, as you will need it in the UK. More detail is in Nigerian CGT for a UK-resident seller.

Moving the money out

Your situationRouteSource
You bought with money brought in from abroad, and the bank issued a CCIRepatriate through an authorised dealer bank against the CCITemplars FAQ: without a CCI, an investor cannot use the official FX market to repatriate
Proceeds are already in a self-funded domiciliary accountTelegraphic transfer to your UK accountPavestones on the FX Manual 2026: Form A removed for outward remittances from self-funded dom accounts; direct transfers up to US$10,000 a day without exhaustive documents
Proceeds are in naira and there is no CCIAsk your bank which route applies and what documents it needsThe bank applies the FX Manual to your facts

Whether naira converted into a domiciliary account counts as "self-funded" is a question for your bank. Bring the sale agreement, deed of assignment, consent, the buyer's payment record and the CGT receipt. Informal routes, such as paying naira to someone who pays you pounds in London, leave no record your UK bank will accept for a large incoming payment. The CCI route is explained in the CCI and investor exits.

UK tax on the gain

Information only. GOV.UK says UK residents normally pay UK tax on foreign income, with relief where it is taxed in both countries, and gains on overseas property are generally within UK Capital Gains Tax for UK residents. For 2026-27, GOV.UK gives a £3,000 annual exempt amount and CGT rates of 18% within the basic rate band and 24% above it. The gain is worked out in pounds, so the purchase price and sale price are each converted to sterling, and the Nigerian tax may be credited against the UK tax on the same gain. See UK CGT on selling Nigerian land.

Example (labelled)

Example only, with made-up exchange rates. You bought for ₦15,000,000 when £1 bought ₦450: about £33,333. You sell for ₦60,000,000 when £1 buys ₦2,000: £30,000. In naira you made a ₦45,000,000 gain, on which Nigerian CGT is due at the rates above. In pounds you made a loss of about £3,333 before costs, so there may be no UK gain at all. With real figures and costs the answer can go either way; work it out from your actual dates.

When the money lands in the UK

  • Expect your bank to ask about the source of a large payment. Have the Nigerian documents ready, translated if needed.
  • The FSCS says temporary high balances from life events such as a house sale can be protected up to £1.4 million for six months; ask your bank whether the proceeds of an overseas sale qualify.
  • Keep the full paper trail for at least as long as HMRC may ask about the tax year; see keeping records of money moved.

What to check first

  1. Is your title perfected, and do you have the original documents?
  2. Did the purchase money come in with a CCI?
  3. Who will compute and pay the Nigerian CGT, and when?
  4. What does your bank need to convert and send the proceeds?
  5. What were the exchange rates on the purchase and sale dates, from a source you can cite?

Where Pryme fits

Proceeds can wait in naira in a Pryme multicurrency account while the paperwork completes, and Swap shows the rate and the fee before you approve any conversion. Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, regulated by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit; outside Nigeria, Pryme works through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

How do I move money from selling property in Nigeria to the UK?

Through your bank: against a CCI if the purchase was funded with imported capital, from a self-funded domiciliary account, or by the FX Manual route your bank applies to naira proceeds.

Do I pay capital gains tax in Nigeria if I live in the UK?

Gains on assets located in Nigeria are taxable there, per PwC. From 2026 individuals' gains are taxed at personal income tax rates, up to 25%.

Do I pay UK tax on selling Nigerian property?

UK residents are normally taxed on foreign gains, worked out in pounds, with relief for Nigerian tax on the same gain. 2026-27 rates are 18% and 24%.

What if I never got a Certificate of Capital Importation?

Templars says an investor without a CCI cannot use the official FX market to repatriate. Ask your bank which other FX Manual route applies.
