Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

Which records to keep of money you send to Nigeria from the UK

Transfer receipts, statements and the reason behind each payment: what to keep when you send money to Nigeria from the UK, for how long and why.

The short answer

Keep three things for every transfer: the provider's receipt (date, amount sent, rate, fee, naira received, recipient), the matching debit on your UK bank statement, and something that shows why you sent it, such as a school fee letter or hospital bill. These answer a provider's source-of-funds question, a DWP review, a complaint and, for larger gifts, inheritance tax questions after 7 years. Transfer firms themselves must keep their records for at least five years.

Why a paper trail matters

Most transfers go through without anyone asking a thing. Records matter for the minority of moments when someone does ask, often months or years later, when memory is no help. The table shows who may ask and what they want to see.

Who may askWhenWhat helps
Your transfer providerA large or unusual payment, a review, a limit increasePayslips or savings statements showing where the money came from, and the purpose document
The DWP, if you claim Universal CreditSavings fall or transfers abroad appearReceipts and the reason for each larger payment
The Financial Ombudsman, in a complaintA transfer went wrongReceipts, quotes, chat transcripts, dates of calls
Executors and HMRC, for inheritance taxGifts in the 7 years before deathA log of gifts: date, amount, recipient, allowance used
A Nigerian bank or relativeA credit is missing or disputedTransfer ID and the NIP session ID

The core records for each transfer

  1. The provider's receipt or confirmation email. It should show the date, amount in pounds, fee, exchange rate, naira received, recipient name, bank and account number, and the transfer ID or MTCN.
  2. A screenshot of the quote before you approved, if the app shows one; it proves what rate and fee you were offered.
  3. The UK bank or card statement line showing the money leaving your account.
  4. The reason: a fee invoice, hospital bill, funeral programme, builder's quote or a short note of what it was for.
  5. Confirmation of receipt: a message from the recipient, or their statement line, for larger amounts.

How long to keep them

Regulation 40 of the Money Laundering Regulations 2017 requires a transfer firm to keep its due diligence records and enough supporting records to reconstruct a transaction for five years from when the transaction completes or the business relationship ends. Your own needs can run longer:

Everyday support payments
At least as long as the provider keeps its records, five years, is a sensible minimum.
Larger gifts
GOV.UK says gifts given less than 7 years before death may be taxed, so a gift log is worth keeping for at least 7 years, and longer is safer.
Payments linked to property
Keep for as long as you own the property; they may be needed when you sell or pass it on.
Anything under dispute
Until it is fully resolved, then the normal period.

On a complaint, the Financial Ombudsman Service asks people to keep a note of calls, emails and events, and to keep the firm's final response, which it will ask to see. You have 6 months from that response to refer the complaint, so keep it at least that long, and longer if the matter is unresolved.

A simple gift log

For inheritance tax, what matters is being able to show the pattern. A spreadsheet with these columns is enough:

  • date;
  • recipient and relationship;
  • amount in pounds;
  • purpose (support, school fees, wedding, property);
  • allowance you think applies (annual exemption, small gift, wedding, normal expenditure out of income);
  • where the receipt is saved.

GOV.UK says regular payments from your monthly income that you can afford after your usual living costs can be exempt with no limit. A log showing the same amount going each month from salary is the clearest evidence of that pattern. See will HMRC ask about money I send to Nigeria for the tax background.

Records that cause problems

  • Receipts that name a different recipient from the person the money was for, without a note explaining why.
  • Purposes in the app that do not match the document you hold; see what purpose of transfer to choose.
  • Cash handed to a friend to send for you, which leaves no record in your name.
  • Deleting the app, and with it the history, when you switch providers. Export or screenshot your history first.

For benefit claimants, sending money abroad on Universal Credit explains why receipts and reasons matter.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme customers can generate a regular or a verifiable receipt or statement for a payment (receipts); anyone can check that a verifiable one is genuine and unaltered, which helps when a provider, adviser or relative needs proof. A Personal Assistant can remind you to file each month's receipts, and nothing moves without your approval (assistant).

Questions people ask

How long should I keep receipts for money sent to Nigeria?

Transfer firms must keep their records for at least five years. Keep yours at least that long, and keep a log of larger gifts for at least 7 years because of the inheritance tax rules.

Is a screenshot enough as proof of a transfer?

It helps, but the provider's receipt or confirmation email and your bank statement line are stronger. Keep the screenshot of the quote as well.

What if my transfer app closes or I delete my account?

Export or screenshot your transfer history before you close it. Afterwards you may have to ask the firm for copies.

Do I need to keep records of small monthly transfers to my parents?

Yes, ideally. A regular pattern from income is what supports the normal expenditure exemption for inheritance tax, and it answers questions from a provider or the DWP.
