Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Life in Port Harcourt

Common money scams in Port Harcourt and how to avoid them

Fake house agents, oil-job fees, bogus levy collectors and fake alerts: the money scams Port Harcourt residents meet, and how to check before paying.

The short answer

The scams Port Harcourt residents most often meet are fake house agents taking deposits, offers of oil and gas jobs that require a fee, people posing as government levy or tax collectors, and fake payment alerts at shops and markets. The defence is the same each time: verify who you are paying, pay only through official channels, and never send money under time pressure.

1. The house that does not exist

Rent is paid in large lump sums in Port Harcourt, often one to two years upfront, which makes it a target. A listing for a flat in GRA Phase 2 or Woji at a price that seems too low, an agent who is "travelling" and asks for a deposit to hold it, or an inspection fee paid before you have seen anything: these are the classic signs.

  • Do not pay to inspect a property.
  • Meet the landlord or a known caretaker on site, and see the inside.
  • Read the tenancy agreement before any money moves.
  • Pay to a bank account in the landlord's or a registered firm's name, not a personal account belonging to someone you met that day.

Our guide to the upfront cost of renting in Port Harcourt explains which payments are normal.

2. The oil job with a fee

Port Harcourt's oil and gas economy, from Trans-Amadi to Onne, attracts job seekers from across the country, and scammers know it. The pattern: a message or social media post promising a role with an international oil company or a contractor, followed by a request for a "processing", medical, training or accommodation fee. A legitimate employer does not ask you to pay to be hired.

  1. Find the company's official website yourself, not through a link in the message.
  2. Check whether the vacancy appears on the company's own careers page.
  3. Be wary of email addresses on free mail services claiming to be from large firms.
  4. Never pay a fee to a personal account for a job.

3. The fake levy or tax collector

Traders at Mile 1, Mile 3 and Creek Road markets, and small businesses along Ikwerre Road, are sometimes approached by people demanding levies in the name of a government agency. In March 2026 the Rivers State Internal Revenue Service (RIRS) said it is the only authority legally empowered to assess and collect revenue for the state, ordered ministries and agencies to stop collecting directly or through third-party agents, and warned residents not to pay unauthorised individuals. The RIRS chairman told a Port Harcourt audience: "If anyone approaches you illegally, report them to us immediately."

SignWhat to do
Cash demanded on the spotAsk for an assessment notice and pay only through designated RIRS channels
No written assessmentDo not pay; ask which law and which agency
Pressure, threats or a crowdNote names and time; report to RIRS and the police
Payment to a personal accountRefuse; government revenue goes through official platforms

For personal income tax, see filing with RIRS in Port Harcourt.

4. The fake credit alert

A buyer at your shop in D-Line shows a transfer screen or forwards an SMS, takes the goods, and the money never arrives. SMS alerts and screenshots can be faked in seconds. Confirm the money in your own banking app before releasing anything, and train staff to do the same. The national checklist is in how to spot a fake credit alert.

5. The "customer care" call about your account

Someone calls claiming to be from your bank or from PHED, says your account or meter will be blocked, and asks for your PIN, a code or a payment to a new account. Banks do not ask for PINs or one-time codes. PHED lists its official channels on its website, including phone lines, email and a customer portal, so check the number against that list before acting. If in doubt, hang up and call back on the number you found yourself.

6. The scheme that doubles your money

Investment schemes that promise fixed, high monthly returns spread fast through churches, offices and WhatsApp groups in Port Harcourt, as they do across Nigeria. Early members are paid from later members' money, which makes the scheme look real until withdrawals stop. Warning signs include returns that are fixed and far above bank rates, rewards for recruiting others, pressure to reinvest rather than withdraw, and no clear explanation of how the money is used. Check whether the operator is registered with the relevant regulator before investing anything. Our national guide to spotting Ponzi and investment scams lists the checks.

Where Pryme fits

When you pay rent, a levy or a supplier, you can generate a verifiable receipt in the Pryme app through Pryme's partnership with VerifyDoc.ai; the other side can check that it is genuine and unaltered. Pryme uses an authenticator app and a transaction PIN, never SMS codes; see Pryme security.

Questions people ask

How do I know a Port Harcourt house agent is real?

Meet the landlord or a known caretaker, inspect the property, read the agreement first and pay to an account in the landlord's or a registered firm's name. Never pay an inspection fee.

Do oil companies in Port Harcourt charge for jobs?

Legitimate employers do not ask candidates to pay to be hired. Treat any request for a processing or training fee as a warning sign.

Who collects levies in Rivers State?

RIRS said in March 2026 that it is the only authority empowered to assess and collect state revenue and that payment should go through its designated platforms.

How do I report illegal tax collectors in Port Harcourt?

RIRS has asked residents to report unauthorised collectors to it directly. You can also report threats or extortion to the police.
