Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Life in Port Harcourt

New to Port Harcourt? Your first-month money setup

Moving to Port Harcourt for work or study? Bank account, PHED meter, rent, transport and tax: the money tasks for your first month, in order.

The short answer

In your first month in Port Harcourt, set up the basics in this order: a bank account with your BVN and NIN, a secure phone, your PHED meter and account at your new address, a realistic transport budget, and a rent savings plan. If you will work or trade, register for tax with the Rivers State Internal Revenue Service and keep records from day one.

Week 1: accounts and your phone

Whether you have come for a job in Trans-Amadi, a posting at Onne, a place at the University of Port Harcourt in Choba, or to join family in Rumuokoro, your first task is the same: a working account and a secure phone.

Opening an account

Most Nigerian banks and licensed fintechs ask for your Bank Verification Number (BVN), National Identification Number (NIN), a valid ID and a phone number. Your account tier, and so your transaction and balance limits, depends on how much identity information you provide; see KYC tiers in Nigeria. If your current account is with a bank that has branches in Port Harcourt, there is often no need to open a new one; update your address instead.

  • Bring your NIN slip or card and a valid photo ID.
  • Use a phone number you will keep; it is linked to your BVN.
  • Proof of address may be asked for higher tiers. A tenancy agreement or a PHED bill in your name helps, which is another reason to sort your meter early.

Securing the phone

Set a strong passcode, turn on an authenticator app for banking where offered, and write down your bank's support numbers on paper. Phone theft on the move is a real risk; our night travel safety guide explains why limits on your banking apps matter.

Week 1–2: electricity at your new address

Your distribution company is PHED, which serves Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom. When you move in:

  1. Photograph the meter and its unit balance on day one.
  2. Ask the landlord in writing whether there are arrears on the meter or account.
  3. Note your meter number for token purchases.
  4. If there is no meter, ask PHED about metering. NERC's Meter Asset Provider scheme lets you pay upfront, with the cost refunded through energy credits.
  5. Save PHED's official contacts from its website so you are not fooled by fake "customer care" numbers.

More detail is in PHED prepaid meters and tokens.

Week 2: transport

Spend the first week noting what your daily route actually costs. Tricycles were banned from many major roads in Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor in 2020, including Ikwerre Road, Aba Road and Trans-Amadi Road, so most trips combine keke on inner roads with buses or taxis on the main roads. Police also restrict tricycles after 10pm. Once you know your fares, multiply by working days and add a buffer for late shifts.

Week 3: rent and housing costs

If you are in temporary accommodation, a hotel or with family, start planning your own place now. In Rivers State, landlords commonly ask for one to two years' rent upfront, plus agency and legal fees often quoted at about 10% each, and sometimes a caution deposit. Choba and Aluu are known for student and budget housing near UNIPORT, Rumuola and Eliozu for middle-income family flats, and Old GRA, GRA Phase 2 and Trans-Amadi for premium rentals.

Week 4: tax and records

Personal income tax goes to the state where you live. In Port Harcourt that is the Rivers State Internal Revenue Service. If you are employed, your employer deducts PAYE; if you are self-employed or freelance, you are responsible for filing and paying. RIRS said in 2026 that annual returns cover employees, the self-employed, business owners and professionals, and that state revenue must be paid only through its designated platforms. Get a Tax ID if you do not have one.

Building your local network

Money in a new city depends partly on people. Ask colleagues or neighbours which pharmacies, markets and transport routes they trust, and join your street or estate WhatsApp group, where outage news from PHED and warnings about scams often appear first. Be cautious about investment offers or job referrals that come through new acquaintances; check them before you pay anything.

Your first-month checklist

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal Account can be opened from anywhere, including before you relocate, and holds naira alongside USD, GBP and EUR. Naira deposits are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank, licensed by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit. You can pay PHED and other bills in the app, keep rent money in a Fixed savings Box, and set up the Personal Assistant for reminders.

Questions people ask

What do I need to open a bank account in Port Harcourt?

Usually your BVN, NIN, a valid photo ID and a phone number. Higher account tiers may need proof of address, such as a tenancy agreement or utility bill.

Which electricity company covers Port Harcourt?

PHED, the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, which also covers Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.

Do I pay tax to Rivers State if I just moved to Port Harcourt?

Personal income tax generally goes to the state where you are resident. Once you live in Port Harcourt, that is Rivers State, through RIRS.

How much should I budget for my first month in Port Harcourt?

It depends on whether you already have housing. List rent or temporary housing, a week of real fares, food, electricity and a small emergency fund, using your own prices.
