Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

KYC tiers in Nigeria: Tier 1, 2 and 3 limits

What Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 accounts need in Nigeria, the CBN's daily and balance limits for each, and how to upgrade when you hit a cap.

Part of the guideIs your money safe in a Nigerian fintech?

The short answer

Under the CBN's tiered KYC framework, a Tier 1 account needs basic details plus a BVN or NIN and is capped at ₦50,000 a day and a ₦300,000 balance; Tier 2 needs both BVN and NIN and allows ₦200,000 a day and a ₦500,000 balance; Tier 3 adds full KYC including proof of address, with a ₦5,000,000 daily limit and no balance cap. Providers may set lower limits of their own, so check your app's tier screen.

Know-your-customer (KYC) tiers let people open a basic account quickly, while keeping larger sums behind stronger identity checks. That trade-off is part of why your money is protected: an account that lets anyone move millions without verification is an account fraudsters will use. For the full picture of licences, insurance and data, see our guide is your money safe in a Nigerian fintech?

The three tiers at a glance

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) introduced three-tiered KYC in January 2013 and revised the limits in September 2017. The BVN and NIN requirements were tightened by a circular of 1 December 2023. These are the published CBN limits as of October 2026.

TierWhat you provideDaily transaction limitMaximum balance
Tier 1Name, photo, date of birth, phone number, address details; BVN or NIN₦50,000₦300,000
Tier 2As Tier 1, plus verified ID; BVN and NIN₦200,000₦500,000
Tier 3Full KYC, including verified proof of address; BVN and NIN₦5,000,000No cap

What each tier is for

Tier 1: getting started

Tier 1 exists for financial inclusion. It lets someone with no utility bill or formal address receive money, pay for things and save small amounts. Since December 2023 every Tier 1 account must carry a BVN or NIN, pulled electronically from the official database. Funded Tier 1 accounts without either were placed on "post no debit or credit" from 1 March 2024.

Tier 2: everyday use

Tier 2 suits most salaried people with modest balances. It requires both your BVN and NIN and a verified ID. Our explainer on BVN vs NIN covers what each one is and why both are needed here.

Tier 3: full access

Tier 3 is a fully verified account, with proof of address checked. It is what you need for a salary that arrives in one payment above ₦500,000, for business receipts, for saving toward a large purchase, or for anything that keeps your balance high.

A worked example: when the cap bites

Tunde has a Tier 2 account holding ₦420,000. A client pays him ₦250,000 for a job.

  1. His balance would become ₦670,000, above the Tier 2 maximum of ₦500,000.
  2. Depending on the provider, the incoming payment may be rejected and returned to the sender, or held until he upgrades.
  3. Even if it arrives, he could send at most ₦200,000 a day, so paying a ₦350,000 supplier would take two days.
  4. After he upgrades to Tier 3 by verifying his address, the balance cap falls away and his daily limit rises to ₦5,000,000.

The fix took him one proof-of-address upload. The cost of not doing it was a bounced payment and an awkward call with his client. If you expect larger sums, upgrade before you need to.

How to upgrade, and what to have ready

  • For Tier 2: your BVN and NIN, both matching your name and date of birth exactly, and a valid ID if the provider asks for one.
  • For Tier 3: a recent utility bill, tenancy agreement or similar document showing your address, matching the name on your account. Some providers verify address by other means, such as a field visit or a third-party address check.
  • Phone number: the number linked to your BVN, since one-time codes go there.
  • Patience with mismatches: if your BVN and NIN records differ, the check will fail until you correct the record at source.

Upgrade only inside your bank's official app, website or branch. Anyone who messages you offering to "upgrade your account" or "remove your limit" for a fee is running a scam. Our article on whether it is safe to share your BVN covers the usual scripts.

Why the limits protect you

Limits feel like friction. They also do three useful things. They make it hard for a fraudster to open an account in your name and move large sums through it. They cap how much can leave your account in one day if someone does get in. And they force the identity checks that let the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation find and pay you if a bank fails, as explained in our article on NDIC insurance limits.

A provider that offers to let you skip verification while moving large amounts is breaking the rules, not doing you a favour. That is a reason to be careful with it.

Limits that sit on top of your tier

Tier limits are not the only caps you will meet. As the CBN tightened BVN rules from 1 May 2026, Channels TV reported that mobile banking would be tied to one device at a time per account, and that transfers in the first 24 hours after activating a banking app on a new device would be capped at ₦20,000. If you have just changed phones and a transfer fails, this is the likely reason, not your tier.

You can also set limits yourself. Most apps let you choose a daily transfer limit below your tier's ceiling. Setting it to what you actually spend in a normal day, and raising it only when you need to, is one of the simplest protections against account takeover. A fraudster who gets in cannot move more than the limit you chose, and raising it usually requires extra verification.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme uses tiered verification for its accounts; in Nigeria, Naira deposits are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Ltd. The more you verify, the more the account can do, and what each level asks for, and its limits, are shown in the app before you move up. For a Naira account in Nigeria, a BVN and/or NIN is required, in line with CBN rules. Personal and Business accounts can be opened from any country, which suits people in the diaspora, freelancers and foreign firms; Savings Boxes and credit remain Naira-only. The multicurrency account page shows the currencies the account holds.

As with any provider, the limits that apply to you are the ones shown in the app, which may be lower than the CBN maximums in the table above. For everything else to check before trusting a provider, see our guide to whether your money is safe in a Nigerian fintech.

Questions people ask

What is the Tier 1 limit in Nigeria?

Under the CBN framework, a Tier 1 account is limited to ₦50,000 in daily transactions and a maximum balance of ₦300,000. Your provider may set a lower limit.

How do I upgrade from Tier 1 to Tier 3?

Add the identifiers your current tier lacks (both BVN and NIN), then verify your address with a recent utility bill or similar document. Do it only in your bank's official app, website or branch.

What happens if I receive more than my tier allows?

The payment may be rejected and returned, or held until you upgrade, depending on the provider. Upgrade before expecting a large payment.

Does Tier 3 have a limit?

Tier 3 has no maximum balance under the CBN framework, but a daily transaction limit of ₦5,000,000 is widely published for it. Banks may also apply their own limits for security.

Why does my bank limit me even though I am Tier 3?

Providers add their own security limits, such as caps on transfers in the first 24 hours after you sign in on a new device. These sit on top of the CBN's tier limits.
