Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Life in Port Harcourt

Paying at Port Harcourt markets: cash, transfer or POS?

How to pay and stay safe at Mile 1, Mile 3, Creek Road and Oil Mill markets: when to use cash, transfer or POS, and how traders can confirm payments.

The short answer

At Port Harcourt markets such as Mile 1, Mile 3, Creek Road and Oil Mill, transfers are now the most common way to pay larger sums, with POS and cash still used for small buys. Pay by transfer for bulk purchases so you have a record, keep a little cash for small traders, and never release or collect goods until payment shows in the receiving account.

How people pay at the markets

Port Harcourt's big markets each have their own rhythm. Mile 1 and Mile 3 in the Diobu area draw shoppers for foodstuff and household goods; Creek Road is a long-established market in the old Township; Oil Mill sits on the eastern side, off the Aba Road axis. Wherever you shop, you will see the same three payment methods side by side.

MethodBest forWatch out for
Bank transferBulk foodstuff, monthly shopping, anything over a few thousand nairaFake alerts and screenshots; network delays
POSWhen the trader has no transfer details or you have no dataCard swaps, double debits, extra charges
CashSmall items, traders who prefer itTheft in crowded aisles; no record

For shoppers: a simple system

  1. Make a list and a budget before you go. Markets reward people who know what they came for.
  2. Carry only the cash you need for small traders. Keep the rest in your account.
  3. For each transfer, check the account name the app shows before you send. It should match the trader or the shop's name.
  4. Wait for the trader to confirm receipt before you walk away with goods. If the network is slow, agree how long you will wait.
  5. Keep your phone out of sight between payments. Police advice in Rivers State on vehicle robbery includes not displaying phones, cash and jewellery in transit, and the same sense applies in a crowded market lane.

For traders: confirming before releasing goods

Fake credit alerts are the most common payment trick at busy stalls. A buyer shows an SMS or a transfer screen, collects goods in the rush and is gone before you find nothing arrived. SMS alerts and screenshots can be faked.

  • Check the credit in your own banking app, not on the buyer's phone.
  • If your apprentice or sales girl handles payments, give them a way to check without having your PIN, or have one person confirm.
  • For bulk orders, take a deposit and confirm it before packing.
  • Ask regular buyers to send a receipt you can verify for large payments.

The detailed checklist is in confirm payment before you hand over goods, and the warning signs of a fake alert in how to spot a fake credit alert.

POS at the market

POS is useful when the network is too poor for a transfer, but it carries its own risks. Keep your card in sight, cover your PIN, and check the amount on the terminal before you enter the PIN. If a payment fails but your account is debited, keep the slip and contact your bank. See POS fraud in Nigeria.

Levies and market charges

Traders sometimes face demands from people claiming to collect levies on behalf of the state. In March 2026 the Rivers State Internal Revenue Service said it is the only authority empowered to assess and collect state revenue, that ministries and agencies must stop collecting directly or through agents, and that residents should not pay unauthorised individuals. Ask for identification and a written assessment, pay only through the channel RIRS designates, and report anyone who demands cash without one. Market unions and associations may have their own dues; those are a separate matter between members and the association.

Buying in bulk with neighbours

Some households in Rumuokoro and Woji pool money to buy foodstuff in bulk, such as bags of rice, gallons of oil and cartons of noodles, then split them. It can save money, but only if the pooling is clear. One person collects contributions by transfer, pays the trader by transfer, and shares the receipt with the group so everyone can see what was paid. Agree in advance how the goods will be divided and what happens if someone pays late. For whether bulk buying saves money at all, see buying foodstuff in bulk.

Keeping records as a shopper or trader

Shoppers
Your transfer history doubles as a spending record. At month end, add up what you spent at the market and compare it with your budget.
Traders
Keep shop money and home money in separate accounts so you can see what the stall really earns.
Both
For disputed or large payments, a receipt the other side can verify settles arguments quickly.

Where Pryme fits

Pay traders with Pryme Send; the app shows the account name before you approve. For big purchases, you can generate a verifiable receipt so the trader can check it is genuine. Grocery and retail is one of the sectors in Spaces, which operates in Port Harcourt; any Loans on Spaces offer can only be spent with Spaces merchants, and its full terms are shown before you accept.

Questions people ask

Do traders at Mile 1 market accept transfers?

Many traders at Port Harcourt markets accept bank transfers, especially for larger purchases. Ask before you buy, and check the account name before sending.

How do I avoid fake alerts as a trader in Port Harcourt?

Confirm the credit in your own banking app before releasing goods. Do not rely on SMS alerts or screenshots shown by the buyer.

Is it safe to carry cash to Port Harcourt markets?

Carry only what you need for small purchases, keep it out of sight, and pay larger sums by transfer.

Who is allowed to collect levies from market traders in Rivers State?

RIRS said in 2026 that it is the only authority empowered to assess and collect state revenue, through its designated platforms. Report unauthorised collectors.
