Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Renewing a Nigerian passport with a changed surname after divorce

Back to your maiden name after a US divorce? Fix your NIN first, then renew with the divorce papers your mission lists. The order and the documents.

The short answer

Update your NIN to the new surname first, because Nigerian missions in the US require the passport form to match your NIN exactly. Then renew as a name change by divorce: the Atlanta consulate asks for the form in the new name, your divorce documents, the current data page, one photo, the old booklet, the NIN, an appointment slip and a stamped return envelope. Ask your mission whether your US decree needs extra certification before you book.

A divorce finalised in a US court changes nothing on your Nigerian records by itself. Your Nigerian passport, NIN and BVN all keep the married surname until you change each one. The order in which you do that matters, because the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) portal checks your passport application against your NIN record, and a mismatch is one of the commonest reasons an application stalls.

Step one: change the surname on your NIN

The New York consulate says names must match exactly across the passport, the NIN registration and the online application, and that an inaccuracy delays processing and may need "amendment with the NIN Center". The Atlanta consulate asks for the renewal form in the new name "matching the NIN". So the NIN comes first.

NIMC lists names among the fields that can be modified. For a name change its modification page asks for the original NIN slip, a Remita payment printout, a signed application letter and a supporting document; for names it gives a sworn affidavit, a newspaper extract or a marriage certificate as examples. NIMC's self-service modification portal also accepts a court affidavit, a newspaper extract, a marriage certificate or another government ID for a change of name. A divorce decree is not named on either page, so expect to pair it with a sworn affidavit and a newspaper notice. NIMC's February 2026 service charter says self-service modifications are handled in 48 to 72 hours in most cases. The steps from abroad are in NIN modification from the US, and the affidavit and notice in a change-of-name affidavit and newspaper notice from the US.

Step two: the passport application

Once the NIN shows the new surname, start a renewal on the NIS portal in that name. The Atlanta consulate files this under "Name change due to marriage or divorce", separate from a change of name on request. Its list:

  • Completed online form in the new name, matching the NIN
  • Payment slip
  • Copy of the current passport data page
  • One passport photograph
  • The expired or expiring booklet (Atlanta treats a renewal without the old booklet as a lost passport)
  • "Clean copy of marriage certificate or divorce documents as applicable"
  • A copy of the husband's means of identity, which the page lists for this category
  • Self-addressed return envelope with postage, the NIN and the appointment slip

The husband's ID item is written with marriage in mind. Ask the consulate whether it applies after a divorce, and bring a copy of your former spouse's ID only if they say it does. The New York consulate's page does not describe a divorce category at all, so New York applicants should email before booking. The NIS passports page lists its own documents for change of name and marital status, including a newspaper publication and a court affidavit, so it is sensible to bring those too.

Which route, and what it costs

RouteWhat the source saysCharge
Name change by marriage or divorce (Atlanta)Divorce documents with the renewalPassport fee only; NIS lists US$150 (32 pages) and US$230 (64 pages), Apr 2026
Change of name or correction on request (Atlanta)Court order, newspaper publication, formal letterExtra non-refundable admin fee of ₦30,000, payable in naira only

The Atlanta consulate's own fees page (modified May 2025) still shows older dollar amounts. Pay what the NIS portal calculates when you apply.

The US divorce papers

Your evidence is a copy of the final divorce decree from the court that granted it. Get a certified copy from the court clerk rather than relying on a photocopy. In March 2022 the New York consulate reported a rise in fake divorce decrees, so expect the document to be read closely. Whether a mission wants a US decree apostilled or otherwise certified is not stated on the pages we read; ask, and see authenticating US documents for a Nigerian consulate.

If your decree restores your former name, keep the page that says so with the bundle. If it does not, the affidavit and newspaper notice carry the change.

What to check first

  1. Your NIN now shows the new surname, in the order you want on the passport.
  2. You have a certified copy of the decree and, if needed, an affidavit and newspaper notice.
  3. You know which mission serves your state and have asked about the husband's ID item.
  4. You still have the old booklet.
  5. Your BVN: the CBN's BVN framework allows a name change after divorce with a divorce certificate, affidavit or newspaper advert. See fixing a BVN name that does not match your passport.

Contactless renewal through the NIS app is designed for straight renewals. A surname change is a data change, so plan on an in-person biometric appointment unless your mission tells you otherwise.

Where Pryme fits

Several of these steps are paid in naira, from the NIMC modification fee to a newspaper notice placed in Nigeria. A Pryme account opened from the US holds naira alongside dollars (multicurrency), and you can keep a verifiable receipt of each payment for your bundle.

Questions people ask

Do I need a court order to use my maiden name on my Nigerian passport after divorce?

The Atlanta consulate treats a change by divorce as its own category needing your divorce documents, not the court-order route used for other name changes. Confirm with your mission, as New York does not list the category.

Can I renew contactless after changing my surname?

Contactless renewal is built for renewals without data changes. A surname change is a data change, so expect to attend for biometrics.

Which do I change first, NIN or passport?

The NIN. US missions require the passport form to match your NIN record exactly.

Is the ₦30,000 correction fee charged for a divorce name change?

Atlanta lists that fee under change of name or correction on request, not under name change by marriage or divorce. Ask your mission which category your case falls into.
