The short answer
Yes, most corrections can start from the US on NIMC's self-service portal, selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng, which covers name, phone number, address and date of birth. NIMC's February 2026 charter lists ₦2,000 for a name or other change and ₦28,574 for a date of birth change; a date of birth can be changed only once, and gender, NIN and state of registration cannot be changed. Partners abroad charge their own dollar fees for in-person changes.
A NIN record that does not match your passport causes trouble at the worst time: the NIS portal compares the two when you renew. If your name is misspelt, the order is wrong or your date of birth is off, fix the NIN first. Here is what you can do from the US and what you need.
What can and cannot be changed
NIMC's modification page lists:
- Can be updated
- Names, date of birth, address, phone number, place of birth, origin, and parents' NIN or origin.
- Cannot be updated
- Gender, the NIN itself, state and LGA of registration, enrolment centre, tracking number, fingerprints and signature.
Route 1: self-service online
The self-service portal handles change of name, phone, date of birth and address. You verify your NIN, log in, pay online (NIMC names Paystack) and upload evidence. NIMC's charter targets 48 to 72 hours for a self-service modification, and two weeks where a date of birth changes by more than five years. The updated slip is emailed on approval.

Two points need care from abroad. First, the date of birth route assumes an NPC document. If you were born in Nigeria, the NPC attestation can be requested online; see correcting NIN details. Second, the pages do not say whether a sworn statement made before a US notary is accepted in place of a Nigerian court affidavit. Ask NIMC at nimcmodification@nimc.gov.ng before you pay, so the application is not rejected for the wrong document.
Route 2: a licensed partner abroad
NIMC's diaspora facts sheet (April 2023) says modifications can be done at licensed partners abroad. A date of birth change needs notarised evidence and a letter, goes to NIMC's Governing Board for approval, is allowed once in a lifetime, and is decided within seven working days. NIMC's modification page adds that biometrics are captured at an in-person modification.

The self-service portal charges in naira and shows the amount before you pay; go by the payment screen. Partners abroad should quote in writing.
A sensible order
- Decide the correct details, matching the document you will rely on most (usually your Nigerian passport or birth certificate).
- Gather the evidence for each field in one go. Each modification is a separate transaction and fee.
- Use self-service if you can; use a partner if you need biometrics captured or have no NPC document.
- After approval, download the new slip and check every field.
- Then update your passport if needed; see correcting a passport data page.
Common reasons for rejection
- The evidence does not show the change clearly, for example a marriage certificate in one name and an affidavit in another spelling.
- The uploaded scan is unreadable or cut off.
- The date of birth evidence is not an NPC document when the portal expects one.
- More than one change has been bundled into a single request.
- The name on the evidence is in a different order from the one requested; say plainly which order you want, for example surname, first name, middle name.
If a request is rejected, read the reason before paying again; a second payment for the same mistake is wasted. NIMC's charter lists complaint routes, including email replies within 48 hours.
