Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Change of name affidavit and newspaper notice from the US

How Nigerians in the US swear a change of name affidavit, publish the newspaper notice and get NIMC, passport and pension records to accept it.

The short answer

The Nigerian change of name route for anything other than marriage or divorce is a sworn affidavit plus a newspaper publication, and Nigerian offices ask for both: NIMC lists a court affidavit and newspaper extract for name changes, and the Atlanta consulate asks for a court order or change of names document with the newspaper publication and a ₦30,000 admin fee. From the US, swear the affidavit before a notary or a Nigerian mission under section 110 of the Evidence Act, and have the notice placed in a Nigerian newspaper.

Nigerians abroad change names for many reasons: dropping a middle name, correcting a spelling that has followed them since primary school, reversing the order of names, or taking back a family name. Unless the change comes from marriage or divorce, Nigerian records expect a particular paper trail. It can be built from the US, but in the right order and with the right wording.

Which route applies to you

ReasonUsual evidenceSource
Taking a spouse's surnameMarriage certificateAtlanta consulate required documents
Returning to a maiden nameDivorce documentsAtlanta consulate required documents
Any other change, or a correctionCourt order for change of names and newspaper publication, with an application letter and previous documentsAtlanta consulate required documents

If your change is by marriage, you probably do not need a newspaper notice at all; see changing your name on Nigerian records after a US marriage.

Step 1: the affidavit

A change of name affidavit is a sworn statement setting out your former name, your new name, that both refer to the same person, and that you wish to be known by the new name from now on. In Nigeria it is sworn at a court registry before a commissioner for oaths. From the US, section 110 of the Evidence Act 2011 recognises affidavits sworn abroad before a notary public or before the authorised officer of a Nigerian embassy or consulate.

  • State every former version of the name, exactly as it appears on old documents.
  • State the new name in the exact order you want on the NIN and passport.
  • Give your date and place of birth, so the affidavit cannot be confused with someone else's.
  • Attach a copy of your passport data page.

If the office receiving it in Nigeria wants authentication, take the notarised affidavit through state certification, the US Department of State and the Nigerian mission; notarising documents for Nigeria explains the chain.

Step 2: the newspaper notice

The notice is a short public announcement, along the lines of "I, formerly known and addressed as [old name], now wish to be known and addressed as [new name]. All former documents remain valid. General public please take note." Wording varies by newspaper and lawyer. It is placed in a Nigerian newspaper, the paper charges for it, and you keep the page or an extract as your evidence.

Some foreign embassies in Nigeria look closely at the timing: the Belgian embassy's legalisation page says a name-change affidavit needs a public notice published at least 21 days before. That is Belgium's rule, not a Nigerian one, but it shows why the dates on the affidavit and the notice should be consistent and not contradictory. A relative or a Nigerian lawyer can usually place the notice for you once they have a copy of the sworn affidavit.

Nigerians often hear about publishing in the official gazette as well. Whether you need it depends on the institution; the Nigeria library's guide to affidavit, newspaper and gazette covers that part in full.

Step 3: updating the records, in order

  1. NIN first. NIMC's self-service modification page lists change of name and names a court affidavit, newspaper extract, marriage certificate or other government ID as supporting documents. Missions require the passport name to match the NIN.
  2. Passport. The Atlanta consulate's requirements for a correction or change on request list an application letter, the court order for change of names and newspaper publication, previous documents and a non-refundable ₦30,000 admin fee payable in naira only.
  3. BVN and banks. Through a Nigerian bank; NIBSS says BVN updates are done at branches.
  4. Pension. A 2024 ThisDay report on PenCom data recapture lists a marriage certificate, newspaper publication, affidavit and employer letter for a change of name.

A worked example

Example only. Oluwaseun in Columbus wants to drop "Abiodun" from his names and be "Oluwaseun Adeyemi" everywhere. He swears an affidavit before an Ohio notary listing both versions and his date of birth, and sends a scan to his sister in Ibadan, who places the notice in a national daily and buys three copies of the page. He uploads both to NIMC self-service. Once the NIN shows the new name, he applies for a passport change at the New York consulate (Ohio is on its published list), confirming the ₦30,000 admin fee route he saw on the Atlanta consulate's page applies there too. Then his BVN on his next trip home.

Mistakes that cause rejections

  • A newspaper notice whose names or order differ from the affidavit.
  • Leaving out a former version of the name that still appears on a school certificate or old passport.
  • Updating the passport before the NIN, when missions check the passport name against the NIN.
  • Changing the name again soon after. Each record has to follow, and some institutions limit how often details can change.

Where Pryme fits

Open or update a Pryme account once your NIN and passport carry the same name, because the account is verified against them. Newspaper and NIMC fees are in naira; a Pryme account holds NGN alongside USD, and you can send naira to the relative handling the notice.

Questions people ask

Can I do a Nigerian change of name affidavit from the US?

Yes. The Evidence Act 2011 recognises affidavits sworn abroad before a notary public or a Nigerian embassy or consulate officer. Check whether the receiving office wants it authenticated.

Who can publish my change of name in a Nigerian newspaper?

A relative, agent or lawyer in Nigeria can usually place it once they have a copy of the sworn affidavit. Keep the page or a certified extract.

Do I need a newspaper notice if I changed my name by marriage?

Usually not for the passport: the Atlanta consulate lists the marriage certificate and husband's ID. Pension providers may still ask for a publication.

What does the consulate charge for a passport name change?

The Atlanta consulate lists a non-refundable ₦30,000 admin fee, payable in naira only, for corrections or changes on request. Confirm it with your own mission.
