Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Italy

Contractor for a Nigerian startup from Italy: employee or not?

A Nigerian startup calls you a contractor, but you work its hours on its tools. How Italian rules judge employee versus contractor, and what follows.

The short answer

Italian rules look at how the work is actually done, not at the label on the contract. Under art. 2 of decree 81/2015, if your work is mainly personal, continuous and organised by the client, the protections of employment apply even though you are not reclassified; if the client also directs you like a boss, it can be employment outright. If you are a true contractor, you invoice with a partita IVA and pay your own INPS contributions, 26.07% for most professionals in 2026.

Lagos and Abuja startups hire developers, designers and product people wherever they live, and many Nigerians in Italy work full-time for one of them on a "contractor" agreement. That label decides a lot: who pays INPS, whether you get holiday or notice, and whose tax problem it is. Italian law does not take the label at face value.

The three categories Italian law uses

CategoryWhat it looks likeMain rule
Employee (lavoro subordinato)You work under the client's direction, control and disciplineFull employment law, payroll, employer INPS
Collaborazione etero-organizzataPersonal, continuous work whose methods are organised by the clientEmployment protections apply (art. 2 d.lgs. 81/2015)
Coordinated or independent contractorYou organise your own work, agreeing only coordination with the client (art. 409 n.3 c.p.c.)Self-employed rules, your own INPS

The Ispettorato Nazionale del Lavoro explained the middle category in Circular 7 of 30 October 2020. All three elements must be present: the work is mainly personal, continuous, and carried out in ways organised by the client. Since decree-law 101/2019 the client no longer has to set your hours and place of work for this to apply, though those remain relevant clues. Following the Supreme Court's ruling 1663/2020, the effect is that the rules of employment apply to you; the contract is not turned into employment unless the client actually directs you as an employer would.

The signs inspectors look at

The INL circular lists indicators that are weighed together, in context:

  • Continuity: the same work repeated over a meaningful period, even without a fixed term.
  • Integration: you are part of the client's team, its sprints, its stand-ups, its tools.
  • Standard, take-it-or-leave-it contract terms rather than a negotiated project.
  • Work assigned by the client's system or managers, with performance metrics it sets.
  • Ratings or reviews that change your workload or pay.
  • Having other clients does not on its own rule the middle category out.

Applied to a typical developer: a fixed monthly fee, daily stand-ups, tickets assigned in the startup's Jira, a company laptop and email, and a manager approving leave look very like etero-organizzazione, or employment. A fixed-price project to build a feature, delivered on your own schedule with your own tools, looks like a contractor.

Why it matters to you

Whether Italian employment law reaches a Nigerian company with no Italian office is a cross-border question that depends on where you habitually work and what the contract says about governing law; take advice from a consulente del lavoro or labour lawyer before relying on it. What is certain is the cost on your side if you are self-employed:

  • Partita IVA professional: you pay INPS Gestione Separata yourself. INPS Circular 8/2026 sets 26.07% for professionals with no other compulsory cover, on income up to a ceiling of €122,295.
  • Collaborator (co.co.co.): 33.72% or 35.03% with DIS-COLL in 2026, split one third you, two thirds the client. A client abroad with no Italian presence rarely handles this, which leaves gaps.
  • No holiday pay, sick pay or TFR unless the contract gives them.

Raising it with the startup

Most founders have not thought about Italian rules at all; they copied a contractor template. Raise it as a shared risk rather than a complaint. Useful questions: can the contract be rewritten as a defined project with deliverables, so it reflects real independence? If they want a full-time team member under their direction, will they budget for an Italian employment route? Can the fee be adjusted to cover the INPS and tax you carry as a contractor? Put whatever you agree in writing.

Tax on both sides

If you live in Italy and are tax resident there, your fees are taxed in Italy; see working remotely for a Nigerian employer: Italian tax. On the Nigerian side, a startup paying a non-resident contractor for professional services may deduct 10% withholding tax under the 2024 regulations, as a final tax unless you have a Nigerian tax presence. Make sure the contract says whether the fee is gross or net, and collect the receipts for a foreign tax credit.

What to check first

  1. Read the contract: who sets your hours, tools and tasks? Is there notice, leave, exclusivity?
  2. Compare it with how you actually work day to day; the facts win.
  3. If it is really a job, ask whether the startup can employ you through an Italian entity or an employer-of-record service.
  4. If you stay self-employed, open a partita IVA and choose a tax regime; see regime forfettario with Nigerian clients.
  5. Budget for INPS and tax from every payment, and price the contract to cover them; see pricing freelance work in euros.

Where Pryme fits

If the startup pays in naira, a Pryme account gives it local naira details to pay you, while you hold euros separately and Swap only when the rate shown suits you. Multicurrency accounts and how Pryme works cover the basics.

Questions people ask

Am I an employee if I work full-time for a Nigerian startup from Italy?

Italian rules judge the facts. Continuous, personal work organised by the client brings employment protections; direction like a boss can mean employment. Take advice before relying on it.

What is etero-organizzazione?

It is work that is mainly personal, continuous and organised by the client. Under art. 2 of decree 81/2015 the rules of employment then apply.

How much INPS does a freelance developer pay in Italy in 2026?

26.07% of taxable income for professionals with a partita IVA and no other compulsory cover, under INPS Circular 8/2026.

Will the Nigerian company deduct tax from my contractor fee?

It may deduct 10% withholding tax on professional fees to non-residents under the 2024 regulations. Ask for the receipt.
