Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Italy

Working in Italy for a Nigerian employer: tax and INPS

Living in Italy but employed by a company in Nigeria: which country taxes your pay, why treaty relief is limited, and the INPS questions to settle.

The short answer

If you live in Italy and are tax resident there, Italy taxes your salary from a Nigerian employer, and Nigeria generally does not tax pay for work physically done outside Nigeria by a non-resident, according to the NGEX diaspora guide hosted by NiDCOM. There is no general Italy–Nigeria tax treaty covering employment: the FIRS lists the Italian treaty as covering air and shipping only. How INPS contributions are paid when the employer has no Italian presence is a question to settle with INPS or a patronato before you start.

The basic picture

More Nigerians in Italy now keep a job with a Lagos or Abuja company and work from Rome, Brescia or Bari. The employer is in Nigeria, the work is done in Italy, and the two countries each have a claim on different parts of the arrangement. Three questions decide your position: where you are tax resident, where the work is physically performed, and who is responsible for social contributions.

Nigerian tax on your salary

Nigeria's tax rules after the 2025 reforms tax non-residents only on Nigerian-source income. The NGEX Diaspora Guide (January 2026, on the NiDCOM website) uses a 183-day test for residence and says services physically performed outside Nigeria are not taxable in Nigeria unless the person is tax resident there. Mondaq's summary of the Nigeria Tax Act (30 September 2026) lists the tests for being non-resident: no domicile, no permanent place for domestic use, no habitual abode, no substantial economic or immediate family ties, fewer than 183 days in Nigeria in 12 months, and not a diplomat.

Whether your employer must still run PAYE on your pay is not settled by any Nigeria Revenue Service page we found. Ask the employer's payroll team to confirm in writing what it deducts and why, and keep payslips that show it.

Italian tax on your salary

Once you live in Italy and are tax resident there, your foreign income is taxed in Italy too. The Agenzia delle Entrate's reasoning in Risoluzione 36/E of 2019, reported by Euroconference News, starts from that point: income received from abroad by an Italian resident is taxable in Italy, and tax paid abroad may be credited under article 165 TUIR where the income forms part of total income. If Nigerian tax has been deducted from salary that Italy also taxes, ask a commercialista whether the credit can be claimed.

Why there is little treaty relief

Double tax treaties normally decide which country may tax employment income. The FIRS Information Circular 2022/15 lists 16 treaties in force for Nigeria and describes the Italian one as covering air and shipping only. So there is no treaty article on salaries between the two countries, and relief, if any, comes from each country's domestic rules.

INPS and social contributions

Social contributions follow different rules from income tax. A Nigerian employer with no presence in Italy is unlikely to be registered with INPS, and we found no social security agreement between Italy and Nigeria in the sources checked for this article. The practical options to discuss with INPS or a patronato are:

  • Whether the foreign employer must register in Italy and pay contributions on your salary, and how.
  • Whether you should instead work as a contractor with a partita IVA, in which case you pay into the gestione separata yourself at 26.07% in 2026, according to INPS circular no. 8 of 3 February 2026.
  • What happens to any Nigerian pension contributions the employer is making for you.

If you need a visa to do this

A non-EU national who is not yet resident in Italy may look at the remote worker route of Italy's digital nomad visa. The Italian Consulate General in New York's guidance lists an employment contract and an employer letter among the documents for remote workers. See our guide to the digital nomad visa.

A scenario

Example, for illustration only. Kelechi moves to Verona with his Italian wife and keeps his job as a product manager with an Abuja company, paid in naira. His children move with him and he sells his flat in Abuja. On the tests Mondaq lists, he may well be non-resident in Nigeria for the year, and under the NGEX guide his salary for work done in Verona would not be Nigerian-source. His employer keeps deducting PAYE out of habit. In Italy, his salary is taxable as an Italian resident. He now has three tasks: ask the employer to review the PAYE deduction, ask a commercialista how the salary is declared and whether any Nigerian tax can be credited, and ask a patronato how contributions should be paid. Had he kept his family in Abuja, the answer on Nigerian residence could be different.

Steps

  1. Work out your tax residence in each country, including the Nigerian family-ties test.
  2. Ask your employer what Nigerian tax and pension it deducts, in writing.
  3. Book a meeting with a patronato or INPS on contributions before your first Italian payday.
  4. Ask a commercialista whether employee or contractor status suits you better, and how foreign salary is declared.

Where Pryme fits

If your employer pays in naira or dollars, a Pryme account holds that money in the currency it arrived in, and you can convert to euro with Swap when you choose, seeing the rate and fee first; see multicurrency. For paying into an Italian account, see getting paid from Nigeria while living in Italy.

Questions people ask

Do I pay Nigerian tax if I work in Italy for a Nigerian company?

Generally not on work physically performed outside Nigeria if you are not tax resident in Nigeria, according to the NGEX Diaspora Guide. Check the non-residence tests, including family ties.

Is there a double tax treaty between Italy and Nigeria?

The FIRS lists one in force covering air and shipping only, so there is no treaty article on salaries.

Who pays INPS if my employer is in Nigeria?

There is no simple answer for a foreign employer with no Italian presence. Ask INPS or a patronato before you start.

Can I work as a freelancer for my Nigerian employer instead?

You can discuss it. As a partita IVA holder you would pay gestione separata contributions yourself, 26.07% in 2026 for professionals without another fund.
