Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Registering a US trademark in Nigeria too

Why a USPTO registration does not protect your brand in Nigeria, how filing with the Trademarks, Patents and Designs Registry works, and how CAC differs.

The short answer

A US trademark covers the US only, so a brand that sells or plans to sell in Nigeria should file separately with Nigeria's Trademarks, Patents and Designs Registry. Its portal (iponigeria.com) takes applications online or through the IPPRO mobile app, issues an acknowledgement at once and, it says, an acceptance document after about two weeks if there are no issues. Registering a company or business name with CAC is not a trademark.

Nigerian founders in the US often build a brand for the diaspora first, then sell into Nigeria: packaged foods, beauty products, fashion, apps. If the brand will appear on shelves or screens in Nigeria, protect it there before someone else does. Trademark rights are national, and your USPTO certificate does nothing in a Lagos court.

Three different registrations people confuse

RegistrationWhat it doesWhere
CAC company or business nameLets you trade under that name in Nigeria; does not give exclusive rights in a brandCorporate Affairs Commission
Nigerian trademarkProtects a brand name or logo for listed goods or services in NigeriaTrademarks, Patents and Designs Registry
US trademarkProtects the brand in the US onlyUSPTO

The CAC side matters because of display rules. CAC's April 2025 public notice, as Templars summarised it, said trading under an unregistered name is an offence under CAMA 2020, and that brand or product names may be used as long as the registered company name is displayed. In other words, CAC lets you use a brand; only the Trademarks Registry gives you exclusive rights in it.

Filing in Nigeria: what the registry's portal shows

The registry's site at iponigeria.com describes itself as the portal for the Trademarks, Patents and Designs Registry. It says:

  • applications can be filed online through the web portal or the IPPRO mobile app;
  • an acknowledgement letter is issued instantly on filing;
  • the acceptance document follows "after 2 weeks if you have no issues".

The portal's front page does not publish fees, classes, the publication and opposition stage, or the term of protection. Check the current fee schedule on the portal when you file, and do not rely on figures from old blog posts.

A sensible order for a brand in both markets

  1. Search both registers before you settle the name. A name free in the US may already be registered in Nigeria, and the reverse.
  2. Decide who owns the brand. Your US LLC, your Nigerian company or you personally. Holding the US and Nigerian marks in different names complicates licensing and later sale.
  3. File in the market where you sell first, then file in the other soon after. The gap is when copycats register.
  4. Use the same mark and logo in both filings so evidence of use supports both.
  5. Keep records of the acknowledgement, acceptance and certificate in one place, with renewal dates.

Filing from the US

Because the Nigerian portal works online, filing from Houston or Atlanta is possible. Many brand owners abroad still use a Nigerian trademark agent or lawyer to search, file, answer queries and handle any opposition, especially for a logo or several classes. Ask the agent for a written quote listing official fees separately from their professional fee.

The reverse rule applies in the US: the USPTO says a foreign-domiciled applicant, such as a Lagos company, must use a US-licensed attorney. If your Nigerian company owns the brand and files in the US, budget for that; see USPTO steps for a Nigerian brand.

Licensing between your two companies

If your US LLC owns the trademark and a Nigerian company sells the product, put a written licence in place: who may use the mark, on what products, for how long and for what fee. Under Nigeria's Copyright Act 2022, as summarised by Esher and Makarios, an assignment or exclusive licence of copyright has no effect unless in writing; a logo is often protected by copyright as well as trademark, so a written agreement covers both.

For the company side in Nigeria, see registering a business name with CAC and registering a US company in Nigeria.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the CAC certificate as brand protection. It lets you trade; it does not stop a competitor registering the brand as a trademark.
  • Filing only for the product you sell today, then launching a second line in a class you never covered.
  • Letting a distributor or relative file the Nigerian mark in their own name "to save time". The registered owner controls the brand.
  • Changing the logo after filing and never filing the new version.
  • Losing the portal login and the acknowledgement letter, which you need to follow the application through.
  • Ignoring renewal dates in one country because you are focused on the other.

What to check first

  • Is the name already on the Nigerian register for your goods?
  • Will a Nigerian distributor or your own Nigerian company sell the product?
  • Is the registered company name displayed alongside the brand, as CAC requires?
  • Who holds the portal login and the certificates?

Where Pryme fits

Official fees in Nigeria are paid in naira. A Pryme Business Account opened from the US holds NGN alongside USD, and the Compliance agent can prepare trademark renewal reminders across both countries for you to approve.

Questions people ask

Does a US trademark protect my brand in Nigeria?

No. You need a separate filing with Nigeria's Trademarks, Patents and Designs Registry.

Is CAC registration the same as a trademark?

No. CAC registers company and business names. A trademark gives exclusive rights in a brand for listed goods or services and is filed with the Trademarks Registry.

Can I register a Nigerian trademark online from the US?

Yes. The registry's portal at iponigeria.com accepts online applications and has the IPPRO mobile app.

How long does trademark acceptance take in Nigeria?

The registry's portal says the acceptance document arrives after about two weeks if there are no issues. Registration itself comes later.
