Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Trademark a Nigerian brand in the US: USPTO steps

How to file a US trademark for a Nigerian brand: search, classes, the $350-per-class fee from January 2025, and when a US-licensed attorney is required.

The short answer

File a US trademark with the USPTO online, choosing each class of goods or services; since 18 January 2025 the base fee is $350 per class, with surcharges for incomplete information or free-text descriptions. If the applicant is domiciled outside the US, for example a company based in Lagos, the USPTO says a US-licensed attorney must represent it; a Nigerian founder living in the US can file without one.

A Nigerian food brand, fashion label or beauty line that sells in the US needs its own US protection. Registration in Nigeria does not stop someone in Texas from using your name, and a US registration does not protect you in Lagos. This guide covers the US side; for the Nigerian side, see registering your trademark in Nigeria too.

Who files, and do you need an attorney?

The applicant is the owner of the mark: you personally, your US LLC, or your Nigerian company. That choice matters. The USPTO says that if you are a foreign-domiciled trademark applicant or registrant, you must have a US-licensed attorney represent you. So:

  • If you live in the US and file in your own name or your US LLC's name, you may file yourself, though an attorney can still help.
  • If the owner is your Nigerian limited company, or you file while domiciled in Nigeria, you need a US-licensed attorney.
  • The USPTO notes that the application fees stay the same either way; the attorney's fee is extra.

Decide the owner before filing. Moving a mark later between a Nigerian company and a US company means an assignment, paperwork and possible tax questions. Many founders hold the brand in the company that will actually sell under it in the US.

Step by step

  1. Search first. Check the USPTO's records for identical or similar marks covering similar goods. A clash with an earlier filing is the most common reason a mark fails.
  2. Pick your classes. Goods and services are grouped into classes, for example cosmetics separately from clothing or restaurant services. Each class costs a separate fee.
  3. Describe your goods using the Trademark ID Manual. The USPTO charges extra if you write your own description in the free-form box instead.
  4. Choose your basis. You can file based on use already in US commerce, with a specimen showing the mark on goods or in advertising for services, or based on a genuine intention to use it.
  5. File and pay through the USPTO's online system.
  6. Answer any examiner letter by its deadline. Examiners raise issues such as likelihood of confusion or unclear descriptions.
  7. Publication and registration. If approved, the mark is published so others can oppose it, then registered.

What it costs: USPTO fees from January 2025

The USPTO's summary of 2025 fee changes says these took effect on 18 January 2025 for fees paid to the USPTO:

FeeAmount
Base application, per class$350
Insufficient information surcharge, per class$100
Free-form text description instead of the ID Manual, per class$200
Each additional 1,000 characters of free-form text, per affected class$200
Section 9 renewal, per class$325

Example: two classes

As an example, a Nigerian skincare brand that also sells branded T-shirts files in two classes. Using ID Manual descriptions for both: 2 x $350 = $700. If it writes its own description for the skincare class: $700 + $200 = $900. Attorney fees, if needed, are on top.

Making the mark stronger

  • Avoid purely descriptive names. A word that simply describes the product, such as a plain food name, is hard to register.
  • Check what the name means in Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa or Pidgin. If it simply describes the product in that language, it may be no stronger than a plain English description.
  • Keep proof of first use: dated invoices, photos of labelled products, screenshots of your online store.
  • Use the mark consistently, in the same spelling and form you registered.

After registration

A registration has to be kept up. Diary the maintenance and renewal filings; the Section 9 renewal fee is $325 per class under the 2025 schedule. Watch for copycats on marketplaces and act early. A registered mark also helps when marketplaces and payment platforms ask you to prove brand ownership.

Keep the correspondence address current with the USPTO. Official letters and deadlines go there, and a missed deadline on an examiner letter can end an application you have already paid for. If an attorney filed for you, confirm they will forward everything after the registration issues.

If you trade under a name different from your LLC's legal name, the trademark does not replace any state assumed-name filing; see DBA filings in Texas.

What to check first

  • Who will own the mark: you, your US LLC or your Nigerian company?
  • Is the owner domiciled outside the US? Then budget for a US-licensed attorney.
  • Which classes do you sell in now, and which in the next two years?
  • Do you have dated proof that you already sell in the US?

Where Pryme fits

Brand owners selling on both sides often pay a Nigerian manufacturer in naira and earn in dollars. A Pryme Business Account holds both, and Swap shows the rate and fee before you approve any conversion. The Compliance agent can prepare renewal reminders for you to approve.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to trademark a name in the US?

The USPTO base fee is $350 per class from 18 January 2025, plus surcharges of $100 for insufficient information and $200 for a free-form description, per class. Attorney fees are extra.

Do I need a US lawyer to file a trademark from Nigeria?

Yes. The USPTO says foreign-domiciled applicants must be represented by a US-licensed attorney.

Can I file a US trademark myself if I live in the US?

Yes. The attorney rule applies to applicants domiciled outside the US.

Does my Nigerian trademark protect me in the US?

No. Each country registers marks for its own territory, so you file separately with the USPTO.
