Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Registering a Canadian product with NAFDAC

How a Canadian food or cosmetics brand registers with NAFDAC: Nigerian applicant, power of attorney, free sale certificate, GMP inspection, timelines.

The short answer

A Canadian food or cosmetic can only be registered with NAFDAC through a company incorporated in Nigeria, acting under a power of attorney from the Canadian manufacturer. NAFDAC's guidelines for imported food and cosmetics require a Certificate of Manufacture and Free Sale authenticated by the Nigerian mission, a Nigerian trademark, samples with a certificate of analysis and a factory GMP inspection. Registration is valid for five years, and NAFDAC's stated timeline for cosmetics is 120 working days.

Nigeria is a large market for Canadian maple products, snacks, supplements, hair and skin care, and many Nigerian-Canadian founders want to sell their own Canadian-made brands back home. NAFDAC, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, must register regulated products before they are imported or sold. Its guidelines for imported food (effective 1 March 2021) say unregistered food may not be imported. The process is detailed and slow, so plan it as a project with a budget.

Step one: you need a Nigerian applicant

NAFDAC registers imported products in the name of a Nigerian company. Both the food and the cosmetics guidelines ask for evidence of incorporation with the Corporate Affairs Commission. That company can be your own Nigerian subsidiary, a distributor or an importer you appoint. Choose carefully: the registration and the relationship with NAFDAC sit with that company. If you are setting up your own, see setting up a Nigerian subsidiary of a Canadian company.

Documents from the Canadian side

  • Power of attorney from the manufacturer to the Nigerian company, signed by a senior officer (the cosmetics guideline names the MD, GM, chair or president), notarised in the country of manufacture, valid for at least five years and stating who owns the brand.
  • Contract manufacturing agreement, if you own the brand but another factory makes it.
  • Certificate of Manufacture and Free Sale, showing the product is made and freely sold in Canada, authenticated by the Nigerian embassy or high commission.
  • Certificate of analysis for the batch sampled.
  • Trademark registered with Nigeria's Trademarks Registry; see registering your Canadian brand as a trademark in Nigeria.
  • Labels and artwork; the food guideline says labels are vetted before samples are submitted.

Authenticating the free sale certificate

The Nigeria High Commission in Ottawa lists Certificate of Free Sale legalisation at CAN$100 per document plus a CAN$50 administrative fee, payable by money order to the High Commission, with a 10 business day turnaround. Its page says the certificate should first be authenticated by Health Canada and Global Affairs Canada. GAC's own page says its authentication service is free and that you submit online first, then send the document. Budget a few weeks for this chain alone.

The NAFDAC process

  1. The Nigerian company opens an account on NAPAMS, NAFDAC's online portal, and submits one application per product with the documents.
  2. NAFDAC screens the dossier and, if satisfied, issues an import permit so samples can be brought in.
  3. Samples and the certificate of analysis go to NAFDAC for laboratory analysis.
  4. NAFDAC sends a GMP inspection invitation letter naming the Nigerian local agent, ahead of the factory inspection.
  5. The application goes to NAFDAC's approval committee; if approved, a registration number is issued, valid for five years.

Where applications usually stall

  • A power of attorney notarised in Canada for a product actually made in another country; the guidelines want it notarised where the product is manufactured.
  • A free sale certificate that has not been authenticated by the Nigerian mission.
  • Labels that differ from the artwork submitted, or that are not vetted before samples are sent.
  • Trademark not yet registered, or registered to someone other than the brand owner named in the power of attorney.

The cosmetics guideline sets a 120 working day timeline on a clock-stop basis, meaning the clock pauses while NAFDAC waits for you. Queries must be answered within 90 working days or the application is closed. Advertising needs separate NAFDAC approval. Fees follow NAFDAC's tariff, which we do not quote here; ask NAFDAC or your regulatory agent for the current figure in writing.

Products NAFDAC will not take

Both guidelines say NAFDAC does not accept new applications for items on the Federal Government's import prohibition list or NAFDAC's ceiling list. The US Trade Administration's summary of the list (changed 10 April 2025) includes, for example, fruit juice in retail packs, spaghetti and noodles, and bottled water and soft drinks among restricted food imports. Check your category before spending on documents.

Worked example: a timeline for a skin care brand

StageExample duration
Nigerian company ready, POA signed and notarised2–4 weeks
Free sale certificate issued and authenticated (Health Canada, GAC, High Commission)4–8 weeks
Trademark filed in Nigeria (acceptance can follow later)In parallel
NAFDAC screening, permit, samples, lab, GMPUp to 120 working days, plus query time
Total, first productAround 8–12 months in this example

These durations are examples for planning, not NAFDAC figures, except the 120 working days. The Nigeria-side steps are set out in full in registering an imported product with NAFDAC.

Where Pryme fits

Registration costs fall in Nigeria, in naira. A Pryme business account opened from Canada gives your business naira account details, so you can pay a Nigerian agent or NAFDAC tariff invoice in naira, and convert from USD, GBP or EUR with Swap when you choose. Payment records can be issued as verifiable receipts through Pryme receipts.

Questions people ask

Can a Canadian company register a product with NAFDAC directly?

No. NAFDAC's guidelines require a Nigerian-incorporated applicant holding a power of attorney from the manufacturer.

How long is NAFDAC registration valid?

Five years, according to NAFDAC's food and cosmetics registration guidelines.

How long does NAFDAC registration take for cosmetics?

The guideline sets 120 working days on a clock-stop basis, plus any time spent answering queries.

Where do I legalise a Certificate of Free Sale in Canada?

The Nigeria High Commission in Ottawa, after Health Canada and Global Affairs Canada authentication. It lists CAN$100 per document plus CAN$50 admin.
