Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Registering your Canadian brand as a trademark in Nigeria

How a Canadian business files a trademark with Nigeria's Trademarks, Patents and Designs Registry: agent, classes, acceptance, opposition and renewal.

The short answer

A Canadian trademark gives you no rights in Nigeria; to protect the brand there you file with the Trademarks, Patents and Designs Registry, which takes applications online through its portal. A guide by MS Mandel Solicitors (November 2025) sets out the route: availability search, application through a Nigerian agent under a power of attorney, acceptance, publication in the Trade Marks Journal with two months for opposition, then a certificate valid for seven years and renewable for 14-year terms.

A Canadian skincare line stocked in Lagos, a Toronto-made seasoning sold through an Abuja distributor, a software brand with Nigerian customers: once your name is known in Nigeria, someone else can try to register it there first. Trademark rights are national. Your Canadian registration helps at home and nowhere else, so if Nigeria is a market, it needs its own filing.

Where you file

Nigerian trademarks are handled by the Trademarks, Patents and Designs Registry. Its portal (iponigeria.com) says applications are filed online through the web portal or the IPPRO mobile app, that an acknowledgement letter issues instantly, and that an acceptance document follows after two weeks if there are no issues.

What you need

  • The applicant's name, nationality and address. If your Canadian corporation will own the mark, use its exact legal name and registered address.
  • A clear representation of the mark: the word, the logo, or both.
  • The classes of goods or services. MS Mandel's guide notes Nigeria uses the Nice classification of 45 classes.
  • A signed power of attorney appointing a Nigerian agent to file for you.

The guide does not say whether the power of attorney must be notarised or legalised for a foreign applicant. Ask your agent before signing so you do the formalities once.

The route, stage by stage

  1. Availability search: a few days, per the guide, to look for conflicting marks.
  2. Application: filed with the fee; the Registry issues an acknowledgement.
  3. Acceptance: if the mark is found registrable, an acceptance letter issues. The guide says it can be used while you wait for the certificate and is accepted for some NAFDAC product registrations.
  4. Publication: the application appears in the Trade Marks Journal; anyone objecting must oppose within two months.
  5. Certificate: issued if there is no opposition or it fails.
  6. Renewal: first term seven years, then renewals of 14 years each.

Worked example

Example only. Temi's Ontario corporation makes hair-care products and is about to sign with a Lagos distributor. She instructs a Nigerian agent to search, then file one class for cosmetics in the corporation's name under a power of attorney. The acceptance letter arrives and the distributor uses it to support the NAFDAC product registration. The application is published; no one opposes within two months, and the certificate issues. Temi diarises the seven-year renewal and her distribution agreement states the mark belongs to her corporation.

Protecting the brand with partners

Distributors and agents sometimes register a foreign brand in their own name. Before you share your brand with a Nigerian partner:

  • File first, ideally before you announce the brand in Nigeria.
  • State in the distribution agreement that your company owns the mark and any goodwill, and that the distributor will not register it or anything similar.
  • Keep every Registry letter, the application number and the journal reference together, so you can show your position quickly.
  • Check the Registry's records before signing with a new partner in case a similar mark is already filed.

Costs to plan for

Budget separately for the search, the filing fee per class, the agent's fee, notarising and couriering the power of attorney if needed, responding to any objection or opposition, collecting the certificate, and renewal at seven years. Ask whether the agent bills in naira or Canadian dollars and when each payment falls due. Pay against an invoice to the firm's business account.

If you are also opening a Nigerian company to sell the products, see setting up a Nigerian subsidiary of a Canadian company. Before paying any Nigerian firm, the Nigeria library explains how to verify a Nigerian company.

Where Pryme fits

Agent fees and distributor payments are usually in naira. A Pryme Business Account holds NGN with local details alongside USD, GBP and EUR, and Swap shows the rate and fee before you approve. Pryme's partnership with VerifyDoc.ai lets you generate verifiable statements and receipts, useful when a partner needs proof of a payment; see receipts. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's services are provided through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Does a Canadian trademark protect my brand in Nigeria?

No. Trademark rights are national; you file separately with Nigeria's Trademarks, Patents and Designs Registry.

How long does a Nigerian trademark last?

Seven years from registration, then renewals of 14 years each, per MS Mandel Solicitors' November 2025 guide.

Can I file a Nigerian trademark online from Canada?

The Registry accepts online filings through its portal and IPPRO app; foreign applicants usually file through a Nigerian agent under a power of attorney.

How long is the opposition period for trademarks in Nigeria?

Two months from publication in the Trade Marks Journal.
