Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Unincorporated partnership with a Nigerian friend in Canada

Going into business with a Nigerian friend in Canada without incorporating: how a partnership is registered, how CRA taxes it and what to put in writing.

The short answer

Two friends who run a business together for profit without incorporating are usually a general partnership, whether or not they sign anything. In Ontario you register the partnership's name with the Ontario Business Registry (online fee $60 as at September 2026), and for tax the CRA does not tax the partnership itself: each partner reports their share of the profit on their own return, and only larger or more complex partnerships must file a T5013 information return.

It often starts informally. Two friends from secondary school in Enugu, now both in Ottawa, start importing ankara fabric and selling at events. Or two nurses in Winnipeg begin a weekend catering service. Money comes in, both put in time, and neither thinks of the arrangement as a legal structure. In Canadian law it usually already is one. This page explains what that means, using Ontario as the worked case; other provinces have their own registries. It is information, not legal or tax advice.

You may already be in a partnership

A general partnership generally exists when two or more people carry on a business together with a view to profit. No document is needed. The consequence most people miss is liability: in a general partnership each partner can be personally responsible for the debts of the business, including debts the other partner ran up. That is the main reason people later incorporate (see federal or provincial incorporation).

Registering the name

In Ontario, a sole proprietorship or general partnership that trades under any name other than the owners' own names registers that name with the Ontario Business Registry. The registry's fee page, updated 29 September 2026, lists these online fees:

Ontario Business Registry serviceOnline feeProcessing
Register a business name (sole proprietorship or general partnership)$60Immediate
Renew a business name$60Immediate
Amend or cancel a business name$0Immediate

Registration does not give you exclusive rights to the name and does not create a separate legal person. The partnership still has no existence apart from you and your friend. If one partner leaves, update the registration; the amendment is free.

How a partnership is taxed

The CRA's T5013 page is clear on the basic rule: a partnership is not taxed at the partnership level and does not file an income tax return. Its income or loss flows through to the partners, who each report their share on their own return.

When a T5013 information return is needed

Even though it pays no tax, a partnership carrying on business in Canada must file a T5013 Partnership Information Return if, according to the CRA:

  • revenues plus expenses (added together, not netted) exceed $2 million, or assets exceed $5 million at the end of the fiscal period; or
  • at any time in the period it has a corporation or trust as a partner, or is part of a tiered partnership; or
  • it invested in flow-through shares; or
  • the CRA asks for one in writing.

Two friends selling fabric or running a catering service will usually fall below these thresholds, so each simply reports their share. Keep proper books anyway; the CRA can ask either partner to show how their share was worked out. Registration for GST/HST, if your combined sales require it, is a separate question.

Worked example

Example only. The fabric partnership makes $30,000 in sales in a year and spends $18,000 on stock, stall fees and shipping, leaving $12,000 profit. The written agreement says 60:40 because one partner put in more cash. One partner reports $7,200 of business income on their own return, the other $4,800 ($7,200 + $4,800 = $12,000). Neither pays tax through the partnership itself, and what each actually withdrew during the year does not change the share each reports.

What a written agreement should cover

A partnership agreement is not required, but without one, provincial default rules decide matters such as how profit is shared. Friendships survive business disagreements far more often when the answers were written down early.

  1. Who contributes what: cash, equipment, stock, time, contacts.
  2. How profit and loss are split, and when drawings can be taken.
  3. Who can sign contracts or borrow on the partnership's behalf, and up to what amount.
  4. Which bank account the business uses, and whether two signatures are needed.
  5. What happens if one partner wants to leave, moves back to Nigeria, falls ill or dies.
  6. How the business is valued if one partner buys the other out.
  7. How disputes are settled: discussion, then mediation, then court.
  8. Who keeps the records and how often both partners review them.

If the business also operates in Nigeria, the Nigerian side has its own rules; this Nigerian partnership agreement guide covers the clauses used there.

Where Pryme fits

A partnership that buys stock in naira and sells in Canada needs clean records of who paid what. A Pryme Business Account holds naira, dollars, pounds and euros, and each payment produces a record that can be issued as a verifiable receipt through VerifyDoc.ai, which helps when two partners reconcile drawings. The Finance agent prepares figures; a person approves anything above the ceiling you set. Pryme's services outside Nigeria are provided through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Do we need a lawyer to form a partnership in Canada?

No. A general partnership can exist without any document, but a lawyer-drafted agreement protects both of you if things change.

Does our partnership file its own tax return?

No. The CRA says a partnership does not file an income tax return; each partner reports their share. A T5013 information return is needed only in the cases the CRA lists.

How much does it cost to register a partnership name in Ontario?

The Ontario Business Registry lists $60 online for a new registration and $60 for a renewal, as at September 2026.

Am I liable if my partner takes a loan for the business?

In a general partnership each partner can be personally liable for the business's debts. Ask a lawyer how this applies in your province.
