Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Selling to Nigerian buyers from Canada: getting paid

How a Canadian seller gets paid by Nigerian buyers: prepayment, letters of credit, the Form M behind a buyer's FX payment, and currency choices.

The short answer

Most Canadian sellers to Nigeria ask for payment in advance or use a letter of credit, because open account is the riskiest method for an exporter. A Nigerian business buyer pays foreign suppliers through its bank against a Form M, and the CBN FX Manual 2026 is reported to cap advance payment for physical imports at 30% of FOB, so a full prepayment demand may not fit the buyer's bank rules. Agree currency, terms and documents before you ship.

The payment methods, from the seller's side

The US International Trade Administration's trade finance guide ranks the usual methods by risk to the exporter. It applies just as well to a Canadian seller:

MethodHow it worksRisk to you
Cash in advanceBuyer pays before shipment, by wire or cardLowest, but some buyers will walk away
Letter of creditBuyer's bank commits to pay against compliant documentsLow if your documents are exact
Documentary collectionBanks release documents against payment (at sight) or acceptance (on a date)Medium: banks do not guarantee payment
Open accountYou ship and invoice for payment in 30, 60 or 90 daysHighest

The guide also mentions export credit insurance as a way to cover open-account risk; for the Canadian option see EDC insurance on sales to Nigeria.

How a Nigerian buyer's payment actually leaves Nigeria

A Nigerian business importing physical goods must open a Form M with its bank before paying or shipping. Sterling Bank's Form M guidance says it is mandatory for anyone importing physical goods, whatever the value, through the Single Window for Trade portal, and that a Form M is marked valid or not valid for foreign exchange. Your proforma invoice is one of its main inputs (see what a Nigerian buyer needs from a Canadian seller).

On advance payments, a June 2026 summary of the CBN Foreign Exchange Manual 2026 (Pavestones via Mondaq) reports that the advance payment limit for physical imports rose from 15% to 30% of FOB value. If that applies to your buyer's transaction, its bank may not release 100% upfront through the official channel. Common structures are a 30% deposit with the balance under a letter of credit or against documents.

Worked example

Example only. A Calgary maker sells machinery parts to an Ibadan factory at US$40,000 FOB. The buyer's bank releases a 30% advance of US$12,000 after the Form M is validated. The balance of US$28,000 is covered by a letter of credit payable at sight against the bill of lading, commercial invoice, packing list and the inspection certificate the Form M requires. Check: 30% of 40,000 = 12,000; 40,000 − 12,000 = 28,000.

Documents the buyer's bank will check

Because the Nigerian buyer's payment runs through its Form M, its bank will check your documents against it. Expect requests for:

  • A proforma invoice that matches the order; Sterling Bank's guidance gives a maximum proforma validity of 90 days.
  • A SONCAP Product Certificate for regulated goods. SON's FAQ says the certificate is issued to the exporter and is used to open the Form M, with a separate SONCAP Certificate per consignment. Bureau Veritas's data sheet says these fees are paid by the exporter: as at its October 2024 edition, US$500 to US$2,000 for a Product Certificate depending on the route, and US$350 per consignment certificate. Food and medicines are exempt from SONCAP.
  • A commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading matching the Form M details.

Ask your buyer early which certificates its bank needs, and build their cost and time into your price.

Currency and terms

  • Invoice in US dollars or Canadian dollars. Nigerian banks pay imports in foreign currency through the Form M; a naira price leaves you converting in Nigeria.
  • Use an Incoterm. Under DAP the buyer handles import clearance; under DDP you would, and the ICC notes DDP cannot be used where local rules require a local importer to clear. For Nigeria, FOB, CIF or DAP are more usual.
  • Match the documents. Your commercial invoice must agree with the proforma on the Form M, or the buyer's bank may refuse to pay.

Before you accept a first order, check the buyer. Ask for its CAC registration details, its bank's name and the Form M number once opened, and speak to someone at the company on a number you found yourself. Requests to ship before the Form M is validated, or to send goods to a different consignee from the one on the papers, are reasons to slow down.

Consumers, not businesses

Selling online to Nigerian individuals is different: they are not opening a Form M for a pair of shoes. Many will ask to pay by transfer or have a relative abroad pay for them. Price in dollars, take payment before you ship, and be clear about who pays Nigerian duty on arrival.

Your Canadian obligations

Getting paid is half the job. Commercial goods leaving Canada for Nigeria may also need a CBSA export declaration before they leave; see filing a CERS export declaration. Keep the export and payment records together.

Where Pryme fits

A Nigerian buyer can pay you in naira or US dollars into a Pryme Business Account, which has local details for each currency, and Invoicing lets you send an invoice in the currency agreed. Money stays in the currency it arrived in until you choose to convert.

Questions people ask

How do I get paid by a Nigerian company?

Usually by advance payment, a letter of credit or documentary collection through the buyer's bank, backed by the buyer's Form M.

Can a Nigerian buyer pay 100% upfront?

A June 2026 summary of the CBN FX Manual 2026 reports a 30% of FOB advance payment limit for physical imports. Ask the buyer what its bank will release.

Should I invoice Nigerian buyers in naira?

For business sales, a US or Canadian dollar invoice matches how Nigerian banks pay imports through the Form M.

Is DDP a good idea for shipping to Nigeria?

Usually not. The ICC notes DDP cannot be used where local rules require a local importer to clear the goods.
