Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Receiving a large gift from Nigeria: records to keep

The records to keep when family in Nigeria send you a large gift in the UK: gift letter, donor statements and the transfer trail, plus the tax position.

The short answer

Keep a signed gift letter stating the amount, that it is a gift with no repayment, and the donor's relationship to you; the donor's bank statements showing where the money came from; and the transfer records showing it arriving. HMRC's forum guidance says a cash gift has no Income Tax implications unless it generates interest or dividends. UK banks may still ask where the money came from, because money laundering rules require them to understand and monitor large or unusual payments.

A parent sells land in Enugu and sends part of the proceeds to a son in Leeds. An uncle helps with a house deposit. A family pools money for a wedding. In each case a large sum lands in a UK account from Nigeria, and sooner or later someone asks about it: the bank, a mortgage lender, a solicitor or HMRC. The time to build the paper trail is when the money moves, not when the question comes.

Is a gift taxable in the UK?

Receiving a gift is not income. An HMRC adviser on HMRC's Community Forums wrote on 20 February 2024 that there are no Income Tax implications on receiving a cash gift unless it generates interest or dividends. That is a forum reply, not formal guidance, but it reflects the general position: the gift itself is not taxed as income, while interest it earns once in your account is.

Inheritance Tax is about the giver, not you. GOV.UK says that when someone based outside the UK dies, Inheritance Tax is due only on their UK assets. A gift of money held in Nigeria by a parent who has always lived there is therefore unlikely to raise UK Inheritance Tax, but the rules have detail; take advice on very large sums. On the Nigerian side, NiDCOM's January 2026 diaspora tax guide says remittances and gifts are not taxable. This is information, not tax advice.

Why the bank asks anyway

Tax is not the only question. Regulation 28 of the Money Laundering Regulations 2017 requires banks to understand the purpose and intended nature of a customer relationship and to monitor it, including source of funds where necessary. A large one-off credit from Nigeria is exactly what triggers that monitoring. A clear file means a short conversation instead of a frozen account; see what happens if a UK account is frozen after a Nigeria transfer.

The records to keep

RecordWhat it showsTips
Signed gift letterAmount, date, donor's name and address, relationship, that it is a gift with no repayment or conditionsSigned by the donor; keep the original and a scan
Donor's IDWho the donor isCopy of passport or NIN slip
Donor's bank statementsThat the donor had the money and where it came fromCover the period before the transfer; mortgage lenders often want several months
Source of the donor's moneySale of land, savings, business income or pension lump sumSale agreement, deed or receipt for one-off sources
Transfer trailThe money leaving the donor's account and arriving in yoursSender's transfer confirmation and your UK statement line
Proof of relationshipWhy the donor would give you moneyBirth certificate or marriage certificate if asked

United Trust Bank's source-of-funds guidance, dated December 2025, is typical: for a gift it asks for a gift letter with the source and amount, and for overseas money, international bank statements or proof of transfer. Lenders differ in detail; if the gift is for a property, use the lender's own form. Our guide to Nationwide's rules for a donor in Nigeria is one worked case.

How the money leaves Nigeria matters

If the donor sends foreign currency from a Nigerian domiciliary account, CBN's 2026 Foreign Exchange Manual, as reported by TheCable and TheNigeriaLawyer in June 2026, eased outward transfers from self-funded domiciliary accounts, with Form A no longer mandatory for such remittances. Reports differ on what a US$10,000 daily figure applies to, so the donor should ask their bank. Keep the bank's transfer advice: it shows the money went through the banking system, which is what a UK bank wants to see. Our Nigeria guide to the FX Manual for personal accounts covers the donor's side.

Steps

  1. Agree the amount and purpose with the donor before anything is sent.
  2. Draft the gift letter and have the donor sign it.
  3. Collect the donor's ID, statements and source documents.
  4. Send through a bank or regulated provider, never in cash or through an informal dealer.
  5. Tell your UK bank in advance if the sum is large, and keep every record for at least six years.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account gives family in Nigeria naira account details to pay into, and gives you pound account details in the UK, in one account. Money stays in the currency it arrived in, and every conversion through Swap shows the rate and fee first. You can also generate a verifiable statement through Pryme's partnership with VerifyDoc.ai, which a lender can check is genuine; see receipts and statements. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's services are carried out through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Do I pay tax on money my parents send me from Nigeria?

Not as income. HMRC's forum guidance says a cash gift has no Income Tax implications unless it generates interest or dividends; interest earned later is taxable in the normal way.

What should a gift letter from Nigeria include?

The donor's name, address and signature, the amount and date, your relationship, and a statement that it is a gift with no repayment or conditions.

Will my UK bank ask about a large transfer from Nigeria?

It may. Money laundering rules require banks to understand and monitor customer activity, including source of funds where necessary.

How long should I keep gift records?

Keep them for at least six years, and longer if the gift funded a property or you may need to show its source again.
