Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Receiving a dowry or wedding gift from Nigeria in Canada

How large family wedding gifts reach Canada from Nigeria, whether CRA taxes them, what banks report, and the paperwork to keep ready.

The short answer

A family gift for a wedding can be wired from a Nigerian domiciliary account straight to your Canadian account. CRA says most gifts are not taxable, so the money itself is not income, though interest you later earn on it is. If the transfer is $10,000 or more, your bank reports it to FINTRAC, and it may ask what it is for, so keep a gift note and evidence of the wedding.

Nigerian weddings come with money moving in several directions. Bride price and customary items usually change hands at home, but parents, uncles and friends often want to help a couple in Canada with a deposit on a flat, the reception or simply a start. When that help is large, the practical questions are how to move it cleanly and what to say when the bank calls.

Is a wedding gift taxable in Canada?

CRA's page of amounts that are not reported or taxed (modified 17 September 2026) lists "most gifts and inheritances". A gift from your parents for your wedding is the ordinary case. Two caveats on the same page and in practice:

  • Income on the gift is taxable. CRA says income earned on these amounts must be reported. Put the money in a savings account and the interest is yours to report.
  • A gift must actually be a gift. Money that is really payment for something, or a loan you will repay, is treated differently. Write down which it is.

This is information, not tax advice; see whether money from Nigeria is taxable in Canada for the wider picture.

How the money can travel

RouteHow it worksPoints to watch
Wire from a Nigerian domiciliary accountThe giver instructs their Nigerian bank to send US dollars (or pounds or euros) to your Canadian accountUnder the CBN's FX Manual 2026, self-funded domiciliary holders no longer need Form A and may send up to USD 10,000 a day (Pavestones Legal on Mondaq, 24 June 2026). Intermediary fees may be deducted.
Several givers, several transfersEach relative sends from their own accountClear for the bank to follow if each payment carries the giver's name and a reference such as "wedding gift".
Cash carried by guestsRelatives bring dollars when they travel for the weddingNigeria Customs has said amounts above USD 10,000 must be declared on departure (Peoples Gazette, July 2025); CBSA requires a report for CAD 10,000 or more brought into Canada (Memorandum D19-14-1).
Naira left in NigeriaThe gift stays in a naira or dollar account at home for later useAvoids conversion until you need it; useful for a later house or business in Nigeria.

Buying dollars with naira simply to send a gift abroad is harder than sending dollars someone already holds; ask the giver's bank which purposes it can sell foreign currency for.

What your Canadian bank sees

FINTRAC's guidance (modified 24 June 2024) requires your bank to report incoming international transfers of $10,000 or more, and two or more within a 24-hour window that add up to $10,000, within five business days. Several relatives sending on the same day to you as the beneficiary can add together. A report is routine and not a tax.

Your bank may also ask about the payment if it is out of pattern for your account. A wedding is a common, understandable reason; what slows things down is having nothing to show.

Paperwork to keep ready

  1. A short gift note from each giver: name, relationship, amount, date, and a sentence saying it is a gift and not a loan.
  2. A copy of each giver's ID and their bank's transfer confirmation.
  3. Evidence of the occasion: an invitation, a marriage certificate or the venue booking.
  4. For large sums, a statement from the giver's account showing the money was theirs.
  5. Your own Canadian statement showing the credit.

Worked example

Chioma's parents send USD 8,000 and her uncle sends USD 3,000 on the same afternoon. At an example rate of CAD 1.38, that is CAD 11,040 and CAD 4,140, together CAD 15,180 to one beneficiary within 24 hours, so the bank reports. Chioma has two gift notes, the invitation and both transfer slips ready. When the bank calls, the conversation takes minutes.

Gifts towards a home

Wedding money is often meant for a down payment. If you will use it for a mortgage, the lender will usually want its own gift letter and to see the money in your account for a period before closing, in addition to anything your bank asked. Ask the lender for its gift letter template before the money is sent, so the giver signs one document that serves both purposes. Our guide on a gift from parents in Nigeria for a down payment covers lenders' requirements.

Where Pryme fits

Relatives can keep dollars in a Pryme Personal Account and send them when the date is set, and each payment can produce a regular or a verifiable receipt through Pryme's partnership with VerifyDoc.ai. If part of the gift should stay in naira for later, Savings Boxes are for naira held in Nigeria. Our guide to questions banks ask about gifts of $10,000 or more goes further.

Questions people ask

Do I pay tax on wedding money from Nigeria in Canada?

CRA says most gifts and inheritances are not taxable. Income you later earn on the money, such as interest, is taxable.

Will my bank report a big wedding gift from Nigeria?

If it is $10,000 or more, or several transfers within 24 hours adding up to that, the bank reports it to FINTRAC. That is routine.

What should a gift letter from my parents say?

Their names, your relationship, the amount, the date, and that it is a gift, not a loan. Attach their ID and the transfer confirmation.

Can guests bring wedding cash from Nigeria to Canada?

Yes, but CBSA requires a report for CAD 10,000 or more brought into Canada, and Nigeria Customs has said amounts above USD 10,000 must be declared when leaving.
