Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Receiving a Nigerian insurance payout in Canada

How a Nigerian insurance claim or court award reaches you in Canada, the papers your Canadian bank will ask for, and where delays come from.

The short answer

Nigerian insurers and courts generally pay in naira into a Nigerian account, so the usual route is to receive the money there and then move it to Canada through a bank or regulated provider. Your Canadian bank may ask where a large incoming payment came from: the discharge voucher, the insurer's payment advice or court order, and the Nigerian statement showing the credit answer that question.

A Nigerian payout can reach someone in Canada in several ways: a life policy on a parent, a motor claim on a car left with family, a fire or goods claim, or a settlement or judgment from a Nigerian case. The details differ, but the path of the money is similar, and so are the questions at the Canadian end.

Check who is paying

Before chasing a claim from abroad, confirm the insurer is licensed. Only NAICOM licenses insurers in Nigeria; the Guardian reported in February 2025 that NAICOM publishes lists of licensed operators and had warned the public about an unlicensed operator selling motor policies. Proshare reported in August 2026 that NAICOM had closed its recapitalisation exercise with 43 insurers and reinsurers verified, and others still under review. If your insurer is not on the current list, ask what happened to its policies before you send any documents.

Our Nigeria library covers NAICOM complaints and claim timelines for when a claim stalls.

How the money usually travels

  1. Claim agreed. The insurer, or the other side in a case, agrees an amount. Insurers usually ask the claimant or beneficiary to sign a discharge voucher accepting the sum.
  2. Paid in naira. TheCable's summary of the CBN's 2026 FX Manual notes that Nigerian entities generally price and settle in naira, with exemptions for some sectors. Unless the policy was written in foreign currency, expect naira paid to a Nigerian account in the payee's name.
  3. Moved abroad. From the naira account you convert and send through a bank or regulated provider. If you hold dollars in a domiciliary account, Pavestones' June 2026 summary of the FX Manual says holders of self-funded domiciliary accounts may make direct transfers of up to US$10,000 a day without Form A.
  4. Received in Canada. The money lands in your Canadian account, and your bank may ask about it.

Asking a Nigerian insurer to pay straight into a Canadian account often adds delay rather than removing it. A naira account in your own name is usually the cleaner start.

What your Canadian bank may ask

FINTRAC requires financial entities and money services businesses to report incoming international electronic funds transfers of $10,000 or more, including two or more transfers totalling $10,000 or more within 24 hours from the same person or for the same beneficiary, within five business days. A report is routine and is not an accusation, but a large, unexplained credit is also when banks ask questions. Prepare:

  • The insurer's claim acceptance or settlement letter and the signed discharge voucher.
  • The policy schedule showing you as policyholder or beneficiary.
  • For a court case, the judgment, order or settlement agreement and your lawyer's letter on the payment.
  • For a life claim, the death certificate and anything showing your relationship to the deceased.
  • The Nigerian bank statement showing the credit from the insurer or law firm, and the outward transfer.
  • Translations of any document not in English or French.

Worked example

Example only. Chiamaka in Winnipeg is the named beneficiary on her late mother's Nigerian life policy. The insurer agrees ₦9,000,000, she signs the discharge voucher and the money arrives in her naira account. She leaves ₦2,500,000 in naira for a memorial and her brother's costs, and converts ₦6,500,000. Before converting she saves the insurer's settlement letter, the voucher and the statement as one PDF. When her bank in Winnipeg calls about the incoming wire, she emails that PDF the same day.

Delays to expect and how to cut them

  • Insurers ask for original or certified documents. Find out early which ones need notarising or authenticating in Canada.
  • Name mismatches between policy, ID and bank account slow everything. Fix them first.
  • Legal settlements may pass through a lawyer's client account before reaching you. Ask for a statement of account.
  • Beware anyone who says a payout will be released once you pay a fee to a personal account. Call the insurer on the number on its official site.

Tax and reporting in Canada

How a payout is treated depends on what it is: a death benefit, a property claim, compensation or interest on a judgment can each be different. Confirm the treatment of your particular payout with an adviser before you file. The CRA also counts life insurance policies issued by a foreign issuer as specified foreign property for Form T1135, which applies if your total foreign property costs more than $100,000. Information only, not tax advice.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account can receive the naira payout on its naira account details and hold it alongside dollars, so you choose when to Swap; the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank. Pryme statements can be generated as verifiable documents through VerifyDoc.ai, which helps when a Canadian bank wants to see where the money came from.

Questions people ask

Can a Nigerian insurer pay my claim into a Canadian bank account?

Most domestic policies settle in naira to a Nigerian account. Receiving into a naira account in your name and then transferring abroad is usually faster.

Will my Canadian bank report a large insurance payout?

Banks report incoming international transfers of $10,000 or more to FINTRAC, which is routine. They may also ask you for documents showing where the money came from.

What documents prove the source of an insurance payout?

The settlement letter, signed discharge voucher, policy schedule, and the Nigerian statement showing the credit from the insurer.

Is a Nigerian life insurance payout taxable in Canada?

It depends on what the payment is. A death benefit, a property claim and interest on a court award can be treated differently, so confirm with an adviser.
