Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Is money received from Nigeria taxable in Canada?

Gifts and inheritances from Nigeria are not income in Canada, but interest on them is, and payments for work are. How to tell them apart.

The short answer

A real gift or inheritance from family in Nigeria is not taxable in Canada: the CRA lists "most gifts and inheritances" among amounts that are not reported or taxed. What is taxable is income: interest, rent or gains you later earn on that money, and any money that is really payment for work, sales or services. Your own savings moved from Nigeria are not income either. Large transfers may still prompt bank questions, so keep proof of where the money came from.

The basic rule

Canada taxes income, not money arriving. The CRA’s page on amounts that are not reported or taxed names most gifts and inheritances, and adds that income earned on those amounts, such as interest, is taxable. So the question for any transfer from Nigeria is not how much arrived, but what it was for.

What arrived from NigeriaTaxable in Canada?Notes
Gift from parents or siblingsNoKeep a short note or message showing it was a gift
Inheritance from an estate in NigeriaNoIncome the estate earned and paid to you may be different
Your own savings moved from a Nigerian accountNoInterest earned on them while you were resident is taxable
Proceeds of selling your Nigerian land or sharesThe gain may beReport the capital gain, not the whole amount
Fees from a Nigerian clientYesBusiness or employment income
Rent from a Nigerian tenantYesRental income, with credit for Nigerian tax
Loan from a relativeNoNot income; document the terms and repayments

Gifts: where the line is

A gift is money given freely, expecting nothing back. Family support from Lagos for a down payment, a wedding gift or money to cover school fees is generally a gift. The risk is mislabelling. If a "gift" is really payment for something you did, such as managing a relative’s Canadian purchases for a fee, or money you are expected to repay, it is not a gift. Our guide to dowry and wedding gifts from Nigeria covers the family-event cases.

Income on the gift

Once the money is yours, what it earns is yours too. Interest from a GIC bought with a gift goes on line 12100. If you leave the gift in a naira fixed deposit in Lagos, the interest is foreign income, converted to Canadian dollars at the Bank of Canada rate for the day it arises, and any Nigerian tax withheld is claimed as a credit, not deducted.

Passing it to your spouse or young children

The CRA’s general income tax guide warns that if you lend or transfer property, money included, to your spouse or common-law partner or a related minor, you may have to report the investment income and capital gains it later earns yourself. A gift received by you and then moved into your spouse’s name to invest can be caught.

Inheritances and foreign property reporting

An inheritance is not taxed on receipt, but what you inherit counts towards Form T1135 if you keep it outside Canada. The CRA’s T1135 questions and answers say inherited or gifted property is recorded at its fair market value when you received it. So inheriting your father’s house in Enugu and renting it out, or keeping his naira accounts open, can push you over the C$100,000 threshold. See whether Nigerian accounts count for T1135.

Banks, reports and proof

Tax and bank compliance are separate. Banks and money services businesses report incoming international transfers of C$10,000 or more to FINTRAC, including two or more that add up to that within 24 hours. That report does not make the money taxable, but your bank may ask about it. Have ready:

  • a message or letter from the sender saying it is a gift, with their name and relationship to you;
  • the sender’s bank statement or transfer receipt;
  • for an inheritance, the letters of administration or probate papers;
  • for your own savings, your Nigerian statements showing the money was yours.

See questions banks ask about gifts of C$10,000 or more.

Selling Nigerian property and bringing the money over

Proceeds from selling land or shares in Nigeria are not taxed as a lump. What Canada taxes, if you were resident when you sold, is the capital gain: the price less your cost, in Canadian dollars. If you owned the asset before you moved to Canada, the CRA’s newcomer rules set your cost at its fair market value on your residence date, so only growth after arrival is taxed. Nigeria may also tax the gain, with credit in Canada for that tax. See the treaty on capital gains.

A worked example

Example only. In 2025 Chidi, in Vancouver, received the equivalent of C$30,000 from his mother towards a house, then put it in a GIC paying C$900 of interest that year. He also received C$4,000 from a Lagos client for website work.

  • C$30,000 from his mother: not reported, not taxed.
  • C$900 GIC interest: reported on line 12100.
  • C$4,000 client fee: self-employment income, reported on Form T2125.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account can receive naira or dollars from family and keep them in the currency they arrived in until you choose to convert with Swap. Verifiable receipts and statements from VerifyDoc.ai give you a clean record of each transfer if a bank asks.

Questions people ask

Do I pay tax on money my parents send from Nigeria?

No, if it is a real gift. The CRA lists most gifts and inheritances as amounts that are not reported or taxed. Interest you later earn on it is taxable.

Is an inheritance from Nigeria taxable in Canada?

Receiving it is not taxed. Income it earns afterwards is, and inherited property held abroad counts for T1135 at its value when received.

Do I declare a gift from Nigeria on my tax return?

There is no line for gifts. Keep proof it was a gift in case your bank or the CRA asks.

Is money from a Nigerian client a gift?

No. Payment for work or sales is income, reported as business or employment income.
