Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Paying Nigerian staff when Canadian banks are closed

Canadian and Nigerian holidays rarely line up. How to plan a payroll calendar for Lagos staff around closed banks, weekends and cut-off times.

The short answer

Plan Nigerian payroll from the Nigerian payday backwards: fund and approve the run at least one Canadian business day before any Canadian holiday, and check the Nigerian public holiday list so salaries do not land on a day the receiving banks treat as closed. Fixed Nigerian holidays include 1 January, 1 May, 12 June, 1 October, 25 and 26 December, with Easter and the Muslim festivals moving each year. Remember that the Nigerian pension deadline counts Nigerian working days from payday.

Why the two calendars clash

A Canadian company paying staff in Nigeria works across two banking calendars, a time difference and, often, a currency conversion. The Canadian side may be closed when Nigeria is working (a Canadian statutory holiday), and Nigeria may be closed when Canada is working (Democracy Day on 12 June, or the Eid holidays). Weekends add to it: a Friday payday in Lagos is Friday morning in Toronto, so an approval left until Toronto's afternoon may not be processed until Monday.

Exchange-rate data follows the same pattern. The Bank of Canada publishes its daily rates by 16:30 Eastern time on each business day, and its table does not include the naira at all; your bank or provider sets the naira rate on the day it converts.

The Nigerian holidays to plan around

The moveable holidays are confirmed close to the date, so exact dates should come from each year's official announcement. A widely used secondary list gives these:

HolidayDate
New Year's Day1 January
Good Friday and Easter MondayMoveable (Christian calendar)
Workers' Day1 May
Democracy Day12 June
Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-AdhaMoveable (Islamic calendar)
MawlidMoveable (Islamic calendar)
Independence Day1 October
Christmas Day and Boxing Day25 and 26 December

Holidays that fall on a weekend are another reason to wait for the official announcement before fixing a payday. Our Nigeria site keeps the 2026 list with dates.

How to build the payroll calendar

  1. Fix the Nigerian payday in the contract (for example, the last working day of the month) and say what happens if it falls on a holiday: paid the working day before is the usual choice.
  2. Mark both countries' holidays for the year on one calendar.
  3. Set an internal approval date two Canadian business days before payday, and three in December and at Easter.
  4. Fund the naira account before the approval date, so the run does not wait on a currency conversion.
  5. Diary the deadlines that follow payday: pension within 7 Nigerian working days, and PAYE by the 10th of the following month.

Worked example: December 2026 (illustrative)

Example: staff are paid on the last working day of the month. Thursday 31 December 2026 is the payday. Christmas Day falls on Friday 25 December and Boxing Day on Saturday 26 December; check the official announcement for any extra day off. Approving on 23 December, before the holiday stretch in both countries, leaves the run ready to go on 30 December whatever the final holiday dates are. The pension remittance clock then starts on 31 December and runs into January.

Canadian deadlines move too

On the Canadian side, the CRA says that when a remittance due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or a CRA-recognised public holiday, the payment is on time if it is received or processed by the next business day. That rule is for your Canadian payroll remittances; it does not move a Nigerian payday or a Nigerian pension deadline. Keep the two sets of rules apart in your calendar. First-time employers can see the Canadian schedule in running Canadian payroll, and the Nigerian pension rule in pension remittance deadlines.

Time zones and cut-offs

Lagos is on West Africa Time all year, while most of Canada moves its clocks in March and November, so the gap between Toronto and Lagos changes twice a year. Rather than memorising the hours, set the approval deadline in Canadian time and keep it well before your bank's or provider's same-day cut-off for international payments, which each institution publishes in its own terms. A transfer approved after the cut-off is processed the next business day of that institution, which may be a Nigerian holiday or a Canadian one. If you convert Canadian dollars into naira for the run, treat the conversion as a separate step with its own cut-off and do it a day earlier.

What to agree with your team in Nigeria

  • Who in Nigeria confirms the holiday dates each year once the federal government announces them.
  • Who in Canada approves, and who stands in when that person is travelling or on holiday.
  • The fallback if a transfer is delayed: a message to staff the same day, not after payday has passed.
  • Where payslips and transfer confirmations are filed.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account holds naira, so you can convert ahead of time with Swap, which shows the rate and the fee before you approve, and pay the team through payroll when you are ready. The Chief of Staff agent can keep the two-country holiday calendar and prompt the approver early; nothing is paid until a person approves.

Questions people ask

What are the fixed public holidays in Nigeria?

1 January, 1 May (Workers' Day), 12 June (Democracy Day), 1 October (Independence Day), and 25 and 26 December. Easter and the Muslim festivals move each year.

What if Nigerian payday falls on a public holiday?

Say in the contract what happens; paying on the previous working day is the common choice and avoids late salaries.

Does the CRA's next-business-day rule apply to Nigerian payroll?

No. It applies to CRA remittance due dates. Nigerian paydays and the pension deadline follow Nigerian working days.

How early should a Canadian company approve Nigerian salaries?

Aim for two Canadian business days before payday, and longer around Christmas and Easter when both countries close.
