Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Sending customer data to staff in Nigeria under PIPEDA

How PIPEDA treats Canadian customer data handled by your team in Lagos: accountability, contracts, comparable protection, transparency and risk.

The short answer

PIPEDA does not ban sending Canadian customers' personal information to staff or contractors in Nigeria, but your organisation stays accountable for it. The Privacy Commissioner's guidance says you must provide comparable protection, mainly through contracts and security controls, tell customers their data may be processed abroad, and assess the risks first. A transfer for processing is a use, not a disclosure, so fresh consent is not needed if the purpose is unchanged.

The situation

A growing number of Canadian businesses run by Nigerians have part of the team in Lagos or Abuja: customer support agents, developers with database access, bookkeepers handling invoices, sales staff working a CRM. Each of them sees personal information about Canadian customers. The federal private-sector privacy law, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), governs how that is handled, subject to any provincial law that applies instead or alongside it in your province.

What the Privacy Commissioner's guidance says

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada's Guidelines for processing personal data across borders (January 2009) remain its core guidance on the subject. The main points:

  • Accountability stays with you. Organisations remain responsible for personal information transferred to third parties for processing, including outside Canada. Principle 4.1.3 requires them to "provide a comparable level of protection while the information is being processed by the third party".
  • Contracts are the main tool. Confirm the processor has policies, training and effective security, and keep the right to audit and inspect.
  • Comparable, not identical. Protection should be generally equivalent to what the data would have had in Canada.
  • Consent. A transfer for processing is a use, not a disclosure; if the data is used for its original purpose, no additional consent is required for the transfer.
  • Transparency. Tell individuals, ideally at collection, that their information may be processed abroad and may be accessible to foreign courts, law enforcement and national security authorities.
  • Foreign law wins abroad. No contract can override the laws of the country where the data is processed.
  • Assess the risk. Some transfers may be unwise, and highly sensitive information may not be suitable for transfer abroad.
  • No ban. PIPEDA does not prohibit cross-border transfers or require a law-by-law comparison.

Employees versus contractors

The guidance is written around third-party processors. Many Lagos teams are contractors, an employer-of-record arrangement or a Nigerian subsidiary, each of which is a separate party, so the contract route fits directly. If the people are your own employees working remotely, the same accountability applies through your employment terms, policies and technical controls. Either way, write it down. The structure options are in what an employer of record does for staff in Nigeria.

The controls that make protection comparable

AreaWhat to put in place
ContractPurpose limits, confidentiality, security duties, breach notice to you, audit rights, return or deletion at the end
AccessNamed accounts, least-privilege roles, no shared logins, access removed on exit
DevicesCompany-managed or vetted devices, disk encryption, screen locks, no customer data on personal phones
Data handlingData stays in your Canadian systems where possible; staff view rather than download
TrainingPrivacy and phishing training at onboarding and yearly, recorded
MonitoringAccess logs reviewed; unusual exports flagged
NoticePrivacy policy states that data may be processed in Nigeria

Keeping customer data in Canadian-hosted systems and letting the Lagos team work inside them, rather than copying data to local machines, does the most to reduce risk. Data protection is also about connections: a support agent working over public Wi-Fi without a secure connection undoes the rest.

When something goes wrong

Plan for the day a laptop is stolen in Lekki or a support agent's account is phished. The contract should require the Lagos party to tell you at once, your team should know who assesses the incident, and your records should show what data the affected account could reach. PIPEDA has its own breach reporting rules for breaches creating a real risk of significant harm; check the Privacy Commissioner's current breach guidance when building the plan.

The Nigerian law also applies

Processing that takes place in Nigeria falls within the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 under section 2(2), whoever the customers are. A Lagos team handling Canadian data should therefore meet the Act's security duty in section 39, and your arrangements should allow breaches to be reported to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission where the Act requires. Where your business also serves customers in Nigeria, the wider obligations are in Nigeria's data protection law for a Canadian company.

Steps

  1. Map what customer data the Nigeria team can see and why.
  2. Do a short written risk assessment, including whether any data is too sensitive to be accessed abroad.
  3. Sign contracts, or update employment terms, with the protections above.
  4. Update your privacy notice to say data may be processed in Nigeria.
  5. Set up access controls and logging, and review them quarterly.

This is information, not legal advice.

Where Pryme fits

Paying Lagos staff and contractors from a Pryme Business Account through payroll keeps those records in one place. The Compliance agent can prepare an access review list and a reminder schedule for training and contract renewals; a person approves every change, and actions are recorded.

Questions people ask

Can I send Canadian customer data to staff in Nigeria?

PIPEDA does not prohibit it. You stay accountable, must provide comparable protection, mainly by contract and security controls, and should tell customers their data may be processed abroad.

Do I need customers' consent to process their data in Nigeria?

Not additional consent if the data is used for the purpose it was collected for; the Privacy Commissioner treats a transfer for processing as a use. You should still be transparent about it.

What should a contract with a Lagos contractor cover?

Purpose limits, confidentiality, security, breach notice, audit rights and return or deletion of data at the end.

Does Nigerian law apply to Canadian data processed in Lagos?

The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 covers processing that takes place in Nigeria under section 2(2), so its security and breach rules are relevant too.
